Garmin Nuvi 1490TV – Yes TV on the Garmin – Just Not in US

Garmin announced that they are launching the Nuvi 1490TV, a widescreen GPS with built in DVB-T television receiver to grab over the air signals in countries other than the US…. like most of Europe. The idea of jamming a TV receiver into a GPS isn’t new, but it’s news for Garmin who is adding the capability to a unit that has a lot going for it already. With the 5.0-inch widescreen, text to speech, and Bluetooth handsfree capabilities it starts to feel high end.

LG GT540 Review

One of the big news stories for 2010 is the continued growth of Android powered devices. Android allows manufacturers to produce high end smartphone style handsets, which usually sell for a premium price, for a lower cost. Whilst some Android devices will still retain a high cost to consumers, there are signs that Android devices will come to market at a more mid range price, giving smartphone access to a wider audience

Sony Ericsson Vivaz (Kurara) Launched Prematurely

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been keeping tabs on Sony Ericsson ( NYSE: SNE )’s Kurara, which has promised to be a reasonably impressive Symbian device with an 8 megapixel camera and 3.2” WVGA touchscreen. Little had been said about an official launch before today, but a press release has been issued and quickly retracted, possibly a slip-up in preparation for the Mobile World Congress next month. Clearly, Sony Ericsson isn’t abandoning Symbian in favour of their ostensibly sexier Android pursuits , especially if the Vivaz is taken into account with their developer strategy for both mobile operating systems. Apparently, Vivaz will be coming to “select markets” (read: Asia and Europe) sometime this quarter at a rumoured price point of $670 – $750.

20 to 30 Motorola Android smartphones coming this year?

Today, while launching the Moto Dext in Singapore, Motorola talked a bit about its plans for 2010. CNET Asia was at the Dext launch event and interviewed Spiros Nikolakopoulos, vice president of Motorola Asia’s Mobile Devices unit. Mr. Nikolakopoulos declared that Motorola wants to release 20 to 30 Android smartphones by the end of this year (probably including the Motorola Shadow , MOTOROI and Motorola BackFlip ). Some of these upcoming smartphones will be available only in local markets, which might mean that the 20 to 30 estimated number includes slightly different versions of the same model (like the Dext and the Cliq).

HTC Bravo appears in live photo, T-Mobile UK to launch it soon

HTC Bravo , the high-end Android smartphone that resembles the Google Nexus One in many ways, has appeared (for the first time) in a live photo. Unlike the Nexus One, which features a traditional trackball, the Bravo comes with a rather weird optical trackpad. Other than that, the unannounced device has Nexus-like features, including a 3.7 inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen display, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Wi-Fi, GPS, HSDPA and a 5MP photo camera. There’s also multi-touch, which isn’t enabled for the Nexus One.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz (Kurara U5) gets official earlier than planned

We don’t know when Sony Ericsson intended to announce the Sony Ericsson Kurara U5 , but the smartphone has just been fully unveiled (with press shots and even a video preview), so it’s safe to say that it’s now official. The website that published all the info available below has almost immediately retracted the article, but the photos and details live on. Apple in talks with UK carriers to offer subsidized iTablet / iSlate?

A full week ahead of the grand Apple event set for January 27 , rumors about the company’s iTablet / iSlate are showing up from all over the Web. For example, Guardian.co.uk is implying that Apple has “approached” UK operators in order to negotiate a possible release of its upcoming tablet. Orange – which will likely offer the Apple tablet in France – is believed to be among these carriers. O2 and Vodafone are possibly in the game, too – especially since both are selling Apple’s iPhone in the UK

New Apple iPhone 4G concept is fairly realistic

Whether it will be called iPhone 4G or not, a new Apple iPhone is almost certainly going to be released this year – most probably in June or July, although, who knows, maybe Apple will surprise everyone and unveil its new smartphone during the January 27 event in San Francisco . But before this to happen, we’ve spotted a new iPhone 4G concept that might be quite close to the real thing – not too different from the iPhone 3GS, but still different enough. Alongside this new iPhone 4G concept come the features that have been rumored (since last year) to be included into it: AMOLED touchscreen display Touch-sensitive case Dual-core processor More RAM More internal memory (64GB?) Video-call camera 5MP camera (possibly with flash) (renderings by Siluko ) And let’s not forget about iPhone 4.0 OS , which should bring UI enhancements and “multi-touch gestures OS-wide.” So, what do you think, would a new iPhone like the one seen above interest you? Opera buys AdMarvel (mobile advertising company) for $8 million

Not long after Google acquired AdMob and Apple bought Quattro Wireless , Opera Software announced that it’s buying a mobile advertising company, too. The company in question is AdMarvel , a California-based startup established in 2006 and led by Mahi de Silva, a former Apple and VeriSign employee. By acquiring AdMarvel, Opera wants to “include highly scalable ad monetization services” into its mobile products and services – like Opera Mobile and Opera Mini (both of which are highly popular mobile browsers). “Every month, nearly 50 million people access the Web using Opera on their mobile phones and together with AdMarvel, we think we can play an important role in the evolution of mobile advertising,” declared Opera’s Chief Executive Officer Lars Boilesen. Opera didn’t say how much it’s paying for the acquisition of AdMarvel, but TechCrunch reports that the Oslo-based company forked out $8 million and it will further pay a $15 million earnout if some “aggressive financial targets” are met within the next two years.

M&M Dispenser Maze: Great for dieters who like a challenge

SparkFun Electronics have been at it again, this time building something that will definitely slow down your candy habit (unless you just raid the store of course). The M&M Dispenser Maze features a classic wooden labyrinth around which you must guide an M&M without it falling off the edges. It uses 8-bit Nintendo buttons for resetting and starting the game, and the joystick from a PlayStation for controlling pitch and roll of the table. Fantastic idea

Apple might make Microsoft’s Bing the default search engine for iPhone

Back in December, when Microsoft launched a free Bing app for Apple’s iPhone , most iPhone users probably didn’t care too much about it. One month after, we’re now hearing that Apple might be in talks with long-time rival Microsoft to make Bing the default search engine for iPhone , instead of Google’s search engine – which is currently the default one. The rumor comes from BusinessWeek , which quotes unnamed sources that are “familiar with the matter”. Reportedly, Apple could choose Microsoft’s Bing as the default iPhone search engine because Google recently became the company’s “primary enemy” (with the launch of Nexus One and the rising popularity of Android ), while Microsoft remains “a pawn in that battle.” Well, I can see what Apple is afraid of. For example, they certainly don’t want iPhone users to search something via Google and see ads for the Nexus One (Google has posted Nexus One ads on its homepage several times)
