Star Wars (Chess) In 3D!

No, Lucas hasn’t officially announced a 3D version of Star Wars (although the release of Avatar might be the driving force that finally makes it happen), but there is a 3D chess board scheduled to come out next month. The image is grainy and there isn’t much info, but the board appears to include pieces with “beloved Star Wars characters” that use “the latest in motion printed technology.” Product Page (£18 or $29/Pre-Order for 2/28)

Nokia wants to turn mobile phones into mobile radars

Today, Nokia unveiled that it’s working on a “mobile radar” concept at its Nokia Research Center (NRC) in Helsinki. Nokia has implemented an active radar sensor into a phone, allowing it “to measure speed and the direction of movement of approaching objects, just like a traditional RADAR would.” The mobile radar technology could be used in controlling your phone’s functions with hand gestures, in personal safety, or in sport. It might be used in gaming, too – perhaps something similar to Nintendo’s Wii, but played on a phone. A video demonstration of the mobile radar (on a Nokia N95) can be watched below: Nokia didn’t say when (or if) we’ll be able to buy phones with mobile radars included. Nexus One succumbs to Colorware’s charms

Colorware’s out to conquer the whole gadget world, it seems, as it has now added Google’s first own-brand phone to its roster. Joining such hero devices as the Nook , iPhone 3GS , every modern console and even the occasional ThinkPad , the Nexus One will take three weeks to undergo its makeover, at a cost of $175 if you’re supplying your own or $800 for a brand new one. Whether the results end up priceless or worthless will be entirely up to you, however, so feel free to practice on their design site a bit before pulling the trigger.

Even with wireless growth, Verizon posts Q4 loss of $653 million

Yesterday, Verizon Communications, Inc. reported a Q4 loss of $653 million, despite a strong showing from its wireless division. Verizon Wireless has the most retail customers of any U.S. carrier, and added 2.2 million new lines during Q4 — almost all of which were post-paid customers — bringing their total customer base to 91.4 million. Losses are being credited to a shrinking land-line customer base, as users move exclusively to cell phones, which was down 3.9% in Q4

New EU laws for cloud computing soon?

Section: Web Cloud computing poses a host of complications in carrying out the law in a uniform fashion, prompting Microsoft’s top lawyer, Brad Smith to pose a suggestion to the EU. The existing European data retention law was passed in 2006, which did not really consider cloud computing implications back then.

Twitter Trends Goes Local

By Gaurav Kheterpal Twitter has recently added a local flavor to the popular Twitter Trends service. It’s now possible to select a geographic region to see what’s hot and what’s not in your city or any city of your interest. The current Twitter Local Trends serves 15 major US cities and 5 countries aside from the United States and I’m sure that it’s a matter of time before more countries and cities are added. This latest offering further strengthens Twitter’s portfolio of location aware services. Last year, it had launched a Geolocation API which helped make twitter applications location aware.

Awesome robot uprising agitprop

I should probably just go ahead and apologize to San Francisco animator and artist Sarah Dungan for posting these images of her awesome robot-revolution-themed prints without giving her a chance to restock her Etsy shop with same. But they were just too cool for me to resist. Hopefully she’ll be amenable to direct inquiries from interested buyers. Like me

intel inside casinos: smarter ways of taking your money

Dhiram over at Newlaunches spotted this Intel video showing the company’s vision of a modern-day casino, one that can be managed remotely, has electronic card tables, Core2Duo-powered slot machines and even handheld gambling devices. It’s all fancy tech, but I don’t think the current gambling generation will be so impressed or welcoming of the improvements on their end. I mean, if you’ve been playing poker using good ol’ cards for decades, it won’t be that easy to switch to touchscreens won’t it? Click to View Embedded Video Clip Also, isn’t a Core2Duo slot machine just overkill? Will players be able to send instant messages or emails while playing?

hogwarts school id card: the surefire way to not buy booze and not get in bars

Harry Potter may not be in the spotlight these days, what with the vampires of Twilight , the Na’vi of Avatar , and the choir members of Glee . But I’m sure a lot of people still re-read J.K. Rowling’s books, and a lot of kids still like to pretend that they’re going to train to become wizards when they grow up. The Hogwarts School ID is a nice and affordable gift for those hardcore Potter fans. It has four themes, one for each of the Hogwarts’ Houses.

Hot Wheels Stealth Rides RC Cars Fold Up Into A Credit Card Sized Package

By Andrew Liszewski Even though I’m well past the age where I should be wandering around a Toys R’ Us without kids in tow, I find the stuff being revealed at Toy Fair to be just as cool as the gear unveiled at CES. Mattel’s ‘Stealth Rides’ for example, which will be sold under the Hot Wheels brand, are fully functioning RC cars that fold down to a credit card sized package that’s about as thick as your average cellphone, making them extremely pocket-friendly. They’ll be available in August for about $25 each in 5 different models including a couple of cars, a couple of tanks and the Tumbler from the recent Batman movies. And while usually these types of miniature RC cars that charge in the remote last for just a few minutes between charges, apparently the Stealth Rides will run for an impressive 30 minutes

New Apple Tablet photo adds iPhone for scale

After the first batch of supposedly leaked live Apple tablet images earlier on today, along comes a second purported to show the imminent touchscreen device cavorting with an iPhone.  The same tipster sent the heavily-masked image to Engadget, though we’re thinking this new shot is slightly out of proportion given the apparent aspect of the display. The first images seemed to indicate that the panel – expected to be around 10-inches in diagonal – would be of a similar aspect to that of the iPhone, whereas in this picture it’s almost square.  However the new angle does show that the unusual bolted screen surround is in fact a prototype casing, either as the hardware lacks its own case or, alternatively, intended to keep the tablet in place. The various cables emerging from the tablet are masked, unfortunately, so it’s hard to tell what connectivity the device might have.

Sharp to bring solar-powered cell phone to China (and possibly elsewhere, too)

Sharp, the biggest (in terms of market share) of all eight major Japanese cell phone makers, has been talking about internationalizing its phone business for quite some time now. It makes sense, as the domestic market is shrinking and as Sharp only sold 20% of all their cell phones outside Japan (1.6 million units) last fiscal. The company is specifically planning [press release in English] to export one of their cell phones powered by solar energy to China.
