Sony and Global HID to unify FeliCa and NFC laptop reader technologies

Sony and Global HID are coyly batting their eyelashes at each other over a memorandum of intent to jointly develop an embedded contactless smart card reader platform for laptops. The idea is to create a single reader compatible with Sony’s popular FeliCa solution in Japan as well as NFC, HID Global’s own iCLASS, and more. As a refresher, about 315 million FeliCa cards are in circulation worldwide with another 67 million FeliCa-capable mobile phones in Japan used for electronic payments, access, interactive advertising, and membership rewards systems. Hell, Sony’s even got a FeliCa reading remote control . The dark arts of Near Field Communication have been given a boost recently with support from Nokia and the US carriers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile

Rumor: Nokia C7 ships with NFC capabilities built in, will be turned on later via software update

There’s an unsubstantiated rumor floating around that the Nokia C7, Finland’s second Symbian^3 device to start shipping , the first being the N8, has NFC capabilities built in , but due to being rushed to market the software written to support said internal hardware wasn’t included. In the future however Nokia will issue a software upgrade that will make the C7 one of the first mass market devices with near field communication built in. Now if this is true, and it may just be a PR snafu, then I’ve got to wonder what the hell Nokia was thinking. Symbian^3 was supposed to have NFC built in right from the start, but typical Nokia processes and bureaucracy meant schedules slipped and the awesome long awaited feature was pushed back to Symbian^4. Earlier this year Anssi Vanjoki himself, the guy who practically invented what Nokia is today and decided to leave the company after he wasn’t made CEO, was quoted as saying that all smartphones coming out of Nokia in 2011 will have NFC .

Their app is called OutFront and it provides “F1-style performance telemetry” for sailors, cyclists, runners and other outdoor sports. Motorola Boosts Efforts to Grab Smartphone Market Share with TV Campaign

Motorola wants to extend their smartphone market share in the mobile space just like every other smartphone manufacturer; however apparently Motorola is going to boost their efforts to grab more market share by launching their first TV advertising campaign of 2010. INQ to make Spotify and Facebook smartphones, coming to AT&T summer 2011

INQ, a company that’s a small division of the huge global operator Hutchison, builds feature phones with smartphone features deeply integrated. Last year they launched several devices in the UK that had Facebook, Twitter, MSN and even Skype built in. They were cheap, but the user interface was playful and indeed easy to use.

GSMA launches mWomen Programme; Announces mWomen Apps Challenge

The GSMA mWomen Programme has been recently launched as a public-private partnership between the global mobile industry and the international development community in an effort to bring the socio-economic benefits of mobile to women in developing markets around the world. The goal is to halve the gender gap from 300 million and bring the power of mobile to more than 150 million women within three years. The initiative was formally launched by GSMA’s CEO Rob Conway, with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Cherie Blair of Cherie Blair Foundation for Women.

Opera to participate in Open Screen Project; Flash coming to their mobile browsers?

Opera Software announced its participation in the Adobe-led Open Screen Project , which consists of more than 70 industry leaders who are working together to make Flash run on an array of platforms and devices. The maker of the wildly popular Opera Mini browser said that partnership with Adobe “ensures compatibility and easy deployment for OEM and operator customers using Opera and Adobe Flash products.” And here comes the interesting part: Through its participation in the Open Screen Project, Opera is making integration even better for customers deploying both Opera and Flash Player 10.1 on their mobile phones and other devices. The result is an improved user experience and faster deployments.
