Open Source has been around for quite some time, but odds are most people you ask won’t know what “open source” is. This isn’t because open source is obscure, but rather it has slipped into the mainstream, and unless you’re already in the know, there’s no real reason you will have noticed it. But open source is here, and it’s growing. Linux maximus Linux was written by Linus Torvalds in 1991. Linux itself was based on earlier incomplete kernels that themselves were available for reworking and building upon.

MobileTechRoundup show #193, Ending the year with Google
It sounded like MobileTechRoundup show #193 was going to be focused on Google when we started with our thoughts on the “Google phone” that was the talk of the town last weekend. Kevin is seriously considering a data-only SIM to be used with the N900 and VoIP services so we look forward to hearing more about that. We chatted a bit about my Zune HD Twitter experiences. The ARCHOS 9 Tablet PC arrived, but it was missing the Tablet PC bits as James discussed
Top 10 posts of 2009 focused primarily on ebook readers
Last year I was still covering mobile phones on this blog as you can read in my best of 2008 post and then the editors of ZDNet and I decided to break out phones into my dedicated Smartphones & Cell Phones blog. I spent most of 2009 writing about all other mobile gadgets (ebook readers, media players, headsets, gaming devices, netbooks, etc.) here on the Mobile Gadgeteer site. As you can see in my top 10 most popular posts written in 2009, five of ten were on the subject of ebook readers, two were on MP3 players, and the others on various topics

HipLogic Brings Smartphone Tech To Simple, Mass Market Feature Phones
There’s a lot of opportunities in regards to mobile marketing these days, but many new-age methods rely on the hope that most of the target audience is equipped with smartphones. Unfortunately, as most marketers know, that’s simply not a reality. HipLogic, a unique startup previously known as Numobiq, has the simple intention of bringing smartphone-like features and capabilities to simple feature phones, or mass market devices. Put simply, the company’s platform is designed to bring sophisticated applications to the simplest cell phones by keeping all the complexity in the network. In theory, HipLogic wants to bring the quick, easy interface of the iPhone, Android and Blackberry to more simple-in-nature and lightweight phones that are available for the mass market. By keeping the heavy-lifting in the background, HipLogic’s platform allows users to toggle on a more iPhone-like interface that can bring with it more smartphone-like content such as real-time data, social networking and apps. It’s all accomplished via a free mobile app that connects the device to HipLogic’s behind-the-scenes technology that incorporates a lightweight JavaScript virtual machine connected to the cloud. That virtual machine can then aggregate information from network operators and the Web to create mash-ups on the device

It’s been a few days (almost a week) spent with the N900, and I have to say it’s been used as a 2nd device predominantly. Mainly due to one issue – at this current time it will not work with a new 3G only 3UK sim card, but apparently there is a firmware update coming which will fix this issue. I think that would be a wise decision 3UK are very much like the N900 – open (well more than their competitors) so it makes sense to make it widely available. Whether using the N900 as my 2nd device has affected my opinion of it so far I have to say is unlikely

Looking for a netbook to buy for my girlfriend—she always talked about getting a laptop to work at home, but was too timid financially to walk the walk—I found a vendor selling an MSI Wind U210 for around $485. That’s more expensive than NewEgg’s price of $430 , but the extra cash was well-spent on a 9-cell battery. Here’s what I did before handing the netbook over to my girlfriend: Took Pictures Here are some pictures of the MSI Wind U210, featuring the netbook in various angles
Nokia Booklet 3G Starts getting Available World Wide
Nokia’s first 3G enabled Netbook, Nokia Booklet 3G has started hitting shelves of retailers around the world. The uselessly highly priced gadget was launched by Nokia at the Nokia World Event 2009 . Apart from being a fully functional Netbook (Nokia likes to call it as Booklet but I like the word Netbook), it also has the functionality of voice communication using a SIM card, like an enormous cell phone. The Nokia Netbook has started hitting shelves of European retailers and service providers shop[s like that of O2 in Germany

The Eee PC T91 is ASUS ’ first full touchscreen tablet netbook and it is finally making its own way onto the United States retail market. Touchscreen tablets have been, in many ways, an oft-repeated mix of excitement and disappointment – great ideas coupled with mediocre hardware, or nice-looking hardware coupled with bad implementation of the touchscreen . Has ASUS managed to sidestep these issues with its own tablet PC? Hardware and Specifications The Eee PC T91 is an 8.9-incher , which means you’ll have a small keyboard even by many netbook standards. Surprisingly, it is easy to type on this one. It got a nice clickiness, and while it is certainly compact, it does not feel cramped, and we really didn’t experience more mistyping than average – which was, to be honest, a pleasant surprise
