Renesas Outs Low-power USB 3.0 Host Controller for Notebooks
Renesas Electronics, as the single largest USB 3.0 host controller manufacturer, is beginning to face fierce competition from ASMedia to Texas Instrument and VIA. humane reader: the $20 computer
I’ve certainly seen our share of low-cost computers , but I can honestly say that this is the least expensive computer system I’ve seen yet. The Humane Reader is designed to provide computer technology to homes or schools without internet access or the budget for traditional PCs or Macs. The 8-bit computer can turn any television into an e-Book/Wikipedia reader. As a matter of fact, its makers say you could store 5,000 books or more on a single 2GB SD card (included in the $20 cost). The creators of the Humane Reader state their value proposition simply: “The Humane Reader can provide a virtual library to any developing world school or individual with electrical power for less than the cost of a single textbook.” Based on the Atmega328p microcontroller (there are actually three of them in there), the open source Humane Reader can be loaded up with educational content via USB, and it can display output on any video display with composite input.

One Hundred Million is the Magic Number
At the Apple worldwide developer’s conference , Steve Jobs talked about a lot of numbers at onstage. Apple talked about the 29% US market share of the smart phone market that the iPhone has achieved. Apple discussed the 58% market share of mobile Web browsing that it now has. Apple even talked about their 22% marketshare in e-books. The most important number, however, that Apple talked about so was 100 million.

CPT transflective display takes on Pixel Qi [Video]
If you’ve kept even half an eye on the low-power computing industry over the past couple of years, you can’t have missed Pixel Qi ’s 3qi display technology and the excitement surrounding what an ultra-low-power screen could do for mobile devices. Now it seems Pixel Qi could have another competitor on their hands, this time from CPT , whose 1366 x 768 transflective panel apparently draws 50-percent less power than a regular LCD, despite coming in at 200 nits brightness and with a contrast ratio of 400:1

Intel to Sell Version of Atom for Tablet Computers (Update2)
(Adds closing share price in the final paragraph.) By Ian King June 1 (Bloomberg) — Intel Corp., the world’s largest chipmaker, is producing a version of its Atom processor for tablet computers, trying to head off gains by mobile-phone chipmakers. Intel will begin supplying the chips, which use half the power of other models, in early 2011, the Santa Clara, California-based company said. The new version of Atom, the most common processor in scaled-down notebook computers, or netbooks, is called Oak Trail. Apple Inc.’s iPad, which went on sale in April, has stoked interest in touch-screen tablet computers, a category that had declined to less than 2 percent of overall PC sales.
