Dell joins the Windows Phone 7 party with Dell Venue Pro
Section: Communications , Cellphones , Smartphones , Mobile Among the mobile phone manufacturers that launched their Windows Phone 7 smartphones, Dell seems to be the odd man out. Well, we’ve known them for their power computers and netbooks but not as much as we know them for mobile phones. Anyway, for their share of the Windows Phone 7 frenzy , Dell is coming out with the Dell Venue Pro. Unfortunately, according to Dell, they are not yet ready to share full details of their Windows Phone 7 unit except for some major features that we should all expect from the unit.

Gear Deal- Lenovo IdeaPad U160 11.6″ ULV Core i5 Ultra-portable Laptop
We start the week with a Gear Deal on the 11.6″ ultra-portable Lenovo IdeaPad U160 . The U160 weighs a mere 2.9 pounds and gets as thin as .9″. It features an Ambient Light Sensor, Active Protection System and data recovery tools. At first glance the U160 might appear to be a netbook but this small computer is anything but a netbook.

GearGames Weekly: October 10 – 16
Welcome back to the GearGames weekly video game release feature here at Gear Diary! This is one of those blockbuster weeks, led by Medal of Honor , the latest war shooter to move from the 1940′s to the modern era and bring plenty of controversy with it! This also seems to be the week of the ‘Game of the Year’ editions – we have Uncharted 2 , Borderlands , and the Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition , all of which add some great stuff at a collection price. The DS and PC have strong showings this week. The DS gets Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals and Super Scribblenauts , while the PC gets Dynasty Warriors Online , the sequel-expansion The Guild 2: Renaissance , and the mediocre (already out for consoles) Lost Planet 2 . My most anticipated game – ArcaniA – Gothic 4 – was delayed for a week for some odd reason.

The Blackberry Playbook: The Ipad’s Succesor?
The line between phones and computers becomes more blurred with every few months of technology that passes. The original move was the release of the iPhone , and the subsequent smartphone releases that followed. These handsets featured call, mobile email and text capabilities, cameras as per previous phone models, and increased usability such as word processors, applications, and a touchscreen. Connection ports were added so that phones no longer served solely as contact devices, but could be hooked up to other systems and used for entertainment purposes. After a few generations of the smartphone, and in a different part of the technology family, the popularity of the netbook laptop, Apple had a groundbreaking idea to merge the two into a new form of technology – the tablet computer.

Logitech N550 USB Speaker Cushion for Netbooks & Ultra-portable Notebooks
Notebooks give us the convenience of working (or even gaming) wherever we want, and some of us choose to work (or game) on a couch or bed. However, extended ‘deskless’ operation will likely cause neck and back pain, not to mention the increased risk of laptop-induced thigh burn. This is exactly why Philips and Logitech came out with the CushionSpeaker and N700 Lapdesk respectively. These two provide cushion between the heat from a laptop and your lap. Additionally, they double as a pair of integrated USB speakers to replace the ones on a laptop.

AT&T announces its first LTE-compatible device and new Pantech Laser QWERTY phone
AT&T has yet to roll out its LTE/4G network , but that doesn’t mean it can’t announce LTE-compatible devices, right? The first AT&T device capable of supporting LTE is the LG Adrenaline USB dongle – which will receive a software upgrade to work on the carrier’s 4G network when this launches (sometime in 2011). Until then, the dongle will provide access to HSPA and Wi-Fi to customers who sign up for DataConnect or DataConnect Pass plans.

Hitachi Launches Hybrid Drive – Optical Drive and Solid State
With netbooks gaining popularity, the fact that no optical drive is included with the product has become a bit of an issue. With out an optical drive, software manufacturers are forced to provide download links for the installation packages. With very large installation packages, a download option may not be available, so vendors need to switch to a solid state device like a USB thumb drive or SD card. Today Hitachi is trying to tackle this problem and provide a solution where everyone wins. Their ODD Hybrid Drive is the solution

Seven Ways to Speed up Your Exchange Experience
Administrators who have ever deployed or maintained Microsoft Exchange will know that it is no mere e-mail server; more than ever, organisations are integrating access to its contacts, calendaring, and collaboration functionality as part of their core business processes. One unfortunate complaint that seems to afflict many users though would be the seemingly inevitable slowdowns in Outlook, resulting in an inferior experience when accessing Exchange. I can certainly identify with the frustration, having first used Microsoft Outlook in the days of Outlook 95. In order to increase the user satisfaction on your network, let’s take a look at some steps that you can take to ensure that your non-IT colleagues are able to work at their maximum productivity.

Entourage Systems partners with Cengage Learning, bringing lots more digital books to the Edge
Surely you remember the Entourage Edge , the dual-screened, Android-powered tablet/netbook that we concluded just wasn’t worth your time — nor your $500, at least. That said, you may not have heard of Cengage Learning, but they’re a massive publishing conglomeration that prints everything from Chilton auto manuals to those giant hair style books found at salons and full of Zoolander rejects doing their best Magnum impression. Between those literary extremes falls a whole raft of textbooks, content that these two companies will start sharing in time for the fall semester, helping to boost the Edge’s street cred as a legitimate satchel replacement for scholarly types. Now all Entourage needs to do is boost the battery life, up the responsiveness, and knock a couple-hundred bucks off the price.

Plextor ships PX-B120U USB-powered Blu-ray drive for $100
We aren’t saying your nifty new netbook can actually handle the stresses of playing back a Blu-ray Disc, but if your USB-equipped laptop has the oomph, Plextor has a new device to bring the spoils of BD to your previously lackluster machine.

Plextor’s USB-powered Blu-ray Drive Goes for as Little as $100
Netbooks always come without an optical drive let alone Blu-ray whether or not it has the horsepower to decode HD video. For these users who miss the HD bandwagon, Plextor today provides a clear upgrade path to high-def world with its $99 PX-B120U USB 2.0 bus-powered BD-ROM drive. Keep in mind the ROM here means you’ll be able to playback your HD flicks on the tiny small screen, but not burn any Blu-ray discs. Burning CDs and DVDs of different variety is possible at 24x and 8x respectively. Those who wish like to rip Blu-ray with MakeMKV might like to know the Plextor PX-B120U reads BD media at 4x.

MSI launches Wind12 U230 ‘Light,’ shaves two inches and 30 clamshells from predecessor’s hide
Are MSI’s 12.1-inch netbooks a hair too large for you? Wonder of wonders, there’s a smaller version that’s practically exactly the same inside. Though the new MSI Wind12 U230 Light confusingly weighs just the same as its predecessor (3.3 pounds) and is still 1.22 inches thick, it’s got a smaller 11.6-inch matte LCD screen that makes it two inches shorter in either direction on a horizontal plane. You’re still getting the same 1,366 x 768 display, 1.6GHz Athlon Neo MV-40 processor, 2GB of RAM, Radeon HD 3200 graphics, 250GB hard drive and sub-par four hours of battery life, but MSI did think to trim the fat in one last direction, and knocked $30 off the price

Verizon “Entourage” ereader duo due September
Here’s an odd one. Verizon are already tipped to be offering at least one 10.1-inch tablet later in 2010, and are name-checked as the potential carrier of choice for Sharp’s upcoming duo of LCD ebook readers , but according to Engadget ‘s sources the roadmap has two devices billed as “ereaders” on the roadmap for September that are labelled as “Entourage”. That’s got them speculating that the devices may be from the same Entourage that produces the dual-screen eDGe ereader . Unsurprisingly technical specifications aren’t exactly flooding the roadmap, so beyond the two devices having 7- and 10-inch displays there’s no indication of hardware.

ARM and TSMC team up for tinier 20nm Cortex SOCs
It’s no secret that ARM ideas are powering much of the mobile revolution these days, but the company doesn’t print its own systems-on-a-chip, that duty gets outsourced to silicon foundries — like TSMC , who just got all buddy-buddy with the firm to transition future smartphone chips to the 28nm and obscenely tiny 20nm high-k metal gate processes. (We’re not sure what this means for GlobalFoundries, who had a similar deal earlier this year.) As per usual with a die size reduction, ARM chips will see higher speed and have decreased power consumption, but since 20nm is (relatively) unexplored territory it could be years before chips hit the market

T-Mobile USA HSPA+ network overtakes rivals with 4G speed reach
“You snooze, you lose” may not be the most eloquent way of putting it, but Sprint CEO Dan Hesse knows that the longer it takes to get customers onto shiny devices like the EVO 4G , the more chance his carrier rivals have to overtake him in high-speed mobile networks. T-Mobile USA has just announced that their HSPA+ network is now the most pervasive in the country, currently covering more than 85m people and on track, the carrier promises, to offer HSPA+ to over 185m people by the end of 2010.

Mobile Edge EVO Backpack Review and Giveaway!
I normally hate traveling for work; juggling a computer, work files, ebook reader, etc. is a pain. However, now that I’ve been trying the Mobile Edge Evo Backpack for a few weeks, I wish I traveled more often so I could use a bag like this! My first impression of the Evo backpack was that it was a complete beast of a bag. It seemed physically large, but when I put it on it didn’t feel as big
