A few more BlackBerry OS 6 images for y’all
RIM are clearly trying to keep your focus on their upcoming BlackBerry OS 6. We’ve seen two different videos already, as well as a bunch of phone leaks and screen shots . And now, just for you guys, they’ve posted a whole heap more to their Inside BlackBerry blog. You can see their updated camera app — which now includes facial recognition — their updated photo viewer, and other multimedia features like video podcasts and the new music player (you’ll have to go to their blog to see that screenshot, though). I’ve never been a huge fan of BlackBerrys (BlackBerries?), but I gotta say, OS 6 looks pretty slick.

Apple: 8.4 million iPhone units sold in Q3, up 61% YoY
Apple has just posted their sales figures for Q3 2010 (which ended last June 26), and it’s proof that the iPhone is still a very profitable device for the company. 8.4 million iPhone units were sold during that period which grew by a remarkable 61% YoY. It’s availability in more markets such as China may have something to do with this, but this feat is still impressive nonetheless especially considering that its competition has definitely grown over the past few months. Needless to say, Q3 is another fruitful quarter in the books for Apple and the iPhone

Apple 3rd Quarter Earnings Beat Expectations
Apple has announced its 3rd quarter earnings. And, once again, the tech giant beat the street. On Tuesday after the close of trading on Wall Street, the Cupertino-based technology juggernaut blew consensus estimates out of the water (which had previously forecast 3Q earnings of $14.75 billion) with actual earnings totaling $15.74 billion. The company’s Q4 revenue guidance comes in at $18 billion vs.

Will “Checking In” Soon Become Obsolete? Mark Cuban Thinks So…
With LBS startups and the art of “checking in” still evolving as a brand new concept, some are already speculating that an entirely new breed of location-based social networking will replace it, effectively making the concept as we know it all but obsolete. Though that may sound over the top, it’s exactly the opinion of Mark Cuban, who recently posted on his blog about a new company he’s just invested in that’s building the “next generation” of LBS social networking. The idea is centered around facial recognition and real-time video imagery of specific locations, so instead of checking in, the next iteration of LBS apps would already know you’re there. “I just invested in a company that takes video of an area and can tell you exactly how many people are in the capture area at any given time,” said Cuban in his post. ”It’s great for traffic patterns, security, and much more. We are posting cameras in certain environments where anonymity is required, and we don’t and won’t capture faces or anything that could identify an individual. We will simply provide incredibly accurate traffic information and patterns

Brightkite Ups The Ante With “Badge Levels” For Better Loyalty & Rewards Programs
Brightkite has been known to experiment with badges for its location-based social networking service, but besides a partnership with Starbucks, has been dormant on the topic- until now. The startup has introduced levels to its badges, based on a variety of check-ins and other social functions, like uploading photos. For example, if you use Brightkite’s mobile website or one of their mobile apps to post 10 photos, you’ll earn a ‘Slick pic’ badge at level 1

Juniper Forecast: Mobile App Downloads To Reach 25 Billion By 2015
A new report published today by Juniper Research suggests mobile app downloads will surpass 25 billion by 2015, up from just 2.6 billion in 2009. According to the report, players across the mobile value chain are seeking to emulate Apple’s success with the App Store by launching their own branded storefronts, such as the ‘Mobile Market’ from China Unicom, ‘Airtel App Central’ from Bharti and the ‘Apps & Games Shop’ on Vodafone 360

France: Samsung Galaxy S to get Froyo in September
The Samsung Galaxy S is undoubtedly selling very well, having recently passed 1 million sold globally and 300,000 in South Korea alone. It did however launch with Android 2.1 on board, so the question everyone wants to know the answer to right now is when will it get Android 2.2 Froyo

Motorola “mini Droid” for Verizon caught in photos and on video?
If you’re thinking the Droid 2 is the only new QWERTY Droid that Motorola’s getting ready to launch via Verizon you might be wrong. Some blurry photos (and a video) of what seems to be a Motorola handset with a portrait QWERTY keyboard (a la Palm Pre) have appeared somewhere in China. The handset’s boot screen looks like the one of a Droid (the well-known red eye is there), so what we have here could be a Droid mini or something like that. Motorola has recently launched two phones with portrait QWERTY keyboards ( Flipout and Charm ), and Verizon had a mid-end Droid before (the HTC Droid Eris ), so I’d say there are considerable chances for this mini Droid to be real and, as assumed, headed to Verizon. Until more details are unearthed, here you have some photos and the promised video of the device: Via Android and Me , Mobiflip.de , Hiapk Similar Posts: Verizon’s HTC Droid Eris shows up in press and hands-on photos Motorola FlipOut to be launched by Orange UK.

Loopt Turns On Automatic Check-Ins, Sort Of
Loopt today announced a new location feature that allows you to share your position automatically in the background to alert nearby friends where you’re at. It seems to be the start in a movement towards “automatic check-ins,” which we covered a few days back . It’s now possible to know where you’re friends are at, regardless of whether they checked-in or not. The addition takes advantage of the background location feature of the iPhone and Android platforms, and comes with explicit sharing options to manage what’s shared and how often.
