Microsoft Tablets To Be Announced October 11th

Apparently Microsoft has more surprises up Steve Ballmer’s voluminous sleeves for this big event in NYC on October 11th. Not only will they be premiering Windows Phone 7, announcing the AT&T WP7 lineup AND the T-Mobile WP7 lineup…but Neowin is reporting that they will be finally letting us know how they intend to answer Apple’s iPad. Neowin has it from a reliable source that even through the focus is on Windows Phone 7, Microsoft will take time to lay out their Tablet strategy. I know that when they canned the Courier project and the HP Slate went the way of all flesh, and then may have been resurrected, sort of…I began to think that Microsoft didn’t HAVE a Tablet strategy. Then when they started inviting iPad users to come to focus groups in Redmond to talk about what they liked about iPads, I KNEW Microsoft had no Tablet strategy to speak of.

From today, Orange and T-Mobile subscribers can request network roaming giving a major boost to network coverage. Initially, the roaming is for 2G coverage only, with 3G scheduled to come online in the New Year. To get access to the roaming setup, customers just need to make a quick call to customer services, as some older handsets may have issues handing over across networks.

iPad Dethroning the DVD Player, CNBC Still CNBC

A very interesting but somewhat ludicrous Fast Money column today shows that even though CNBC’s former Silicon Valley bureau chief (and infamous Apple fanboi and mouthpiece), Jim Goldman, left the station in July to work in PR, his spirit lives on, at least in terms of the station’s fawning worship of all things Apple. The core of the column is factual and speaks for itself. The iPad has out done the DVD player to become the most quickly accepted consumer electronics product in history, by a wide margin.

WP7 Release Spurning Enterprise, Then Remaking WinMo’s Mistakes?

Oh please Mr. Ballmer, say it ain’t so. Remember the dark days when Microsoft split its Mobile client into three flavors; first called Pocket PC, PPC Phone and PPC Smartphone and then Windows Mobile Standard, Windows Mobile Professional and Windows Mobile Classic (for some reason at the time, MS marketers missed the obvious fourth flavor, Windows Mobile Increasingly Irrelevant)? It appears that MS may be going for a new version of that market-baffling strategy. First of all, it appears that Microsoft is admitting that, out of the box, Windows Phone 7 will not be a good fit for the Enterprise, being slavishly consumer focused.

Scalpers Overwhelm Apple Stores in China

If you needed more proof that the Chinese market presents a unique and challenging environment for Western tech vendors, here it is. Apple has had to take extreme measures in China such as making buyers present ID at purchase, have their iPhone 4s opened and activated in the store and even closing the doors of their four bright, shiny Chinese Apple stores for a time to try to deal with scalpers

Nokia N8 Starts Shipping, But Is It Enough?

The Nokia N8 is a GO! For select markets. Nokia sent out a press release earlier today stating the N8, the new Symbian^3-powered 12-megapixel-carrying flagship smartphone, has started shipping to select markets. The USA, however, is not one of those markets. It’s hard to pinpoint when the US will be getting the N8. Nokia’s USA web store currently lists the ship date as “Early October 2010″, but an article from Information Week posted early today noted that the page actually read “End of October 2010″, and a customer rep confirmed the delay
