Motorola Plans to Ship Its Own Direct-to-Consumer Phone
a Motorola’s co-CEO, Sanjay Jha, said in the recent Motorola earnings calls that they plan to ship “at least 20 devices, including at least one direct-to-consumer device with Google.” Direct-to-Consumer is the business model that Google uses to sell Nexus One , a powerful Android-powered smartphone that is made by HTC . It is quite certain that Motorola’s Direct-to-Consumer phone will continue to use the name of “Nexus One”, the brand that Google is pushing hard to fight against Apple’s iPhone.

Palm Pre Plus, Palm Pixi Plus: First impressions
I got the Palm Pre Plus and the Palm Pixi Plus from Verizon a couple days ago, and I’m here to share my first impressions. Starting with the Pre Plus, first thing I have to say is the build quality is a lot better. I had quite a few problems with the Sprint Palm Pre, and it’s all fixed now on the Pre Plus. Slider is solid, no creaks, everything is solid

Verizon Pre Plus – a buyer’s experience
Verizon’s Pre Plus has already been handled and reviewed by hardware professionals all over the world – but it has not, so far, been tested by a former Palm OS head. Ryan Kairer’s PalmInfoCenter now did just that, pairing up a long-term Centro head with a Pre Plus obtained from Verizon’s via a Best Buy store. Unfortunately, the initial experience was all but smooth – not only did the activation take ages, but staff also loathed the box: … The BB Mobile sales staff seemed fairly unenthusiastic about Palm’s products, being unaware of several key specifics about webOS, such as its current lack of support for Visual Voicemail, voice dialing, and video capture. In general, our salesclerk was quick to recommend a Droid over any of the webOS devices but we refused to be deterred from our mission to acquire a Pre Plus.

Elevation Partners increases Yelp investment
In a move which does not really surprise me, the folks at Elevation Partner’s have just increased their stake in the local search / user review engine Yelp from 25 to 100 million USD. CNet reports the following: Elevation Partners, the Silicon Valley private equity firm that counts U2’s Bono among its investors, announced Wednesday that it has committed up to $100 million in funding for reviews site Yelp. It’s initially investing $25 million in the Series E round, and plans to increase the investment to up to $100 million through the purchase of stock from employees whose stock has vested, as well as other eligible shareholders. … If we look at Elevation’s past investments and the way they have moved the webOS, a clear trend emerges: the folks at ELP want to become a major player in “user data processing” for individuals . The real strength of the Pre is not so much its powerful applications, but rather its “communicativeness” – the webOS is truly a “web OS” in that it makes getting the most out of your data its prime task

Nokia Research Center unveils mobile radar concept
Nokia Research Center (NRC) Helsinki today unveiled a new research concept at Demo House 2010 research exhibition in Espoo, Finland. The mobile radar demonstration shows how a mobile device can use an active radar sensor to measure speed and the direction of movement of approaching objects, just as traditional RADAR would. It uses electromagnetic waves to provide a different type of mobile wireless sensing. This research concept could enable new ways for users to interact with their device, for example via gesture control

Pink Pixeled Glock Shoots Real Bullets, Not Pixels
This DuraCoat Glock Gun Lady Swat Digital is a dangerous example of products that should remain in its natural state and don’t necessarily need a new paint job like those gadgets that get the Colorware treatment do. Jim’s Gun Supply is no stranger to controversy, and yet they still continue to pump out designs on guns that in the end, make them look like toys instead of dangerous weapons. Obviously with this design they are reaching out to not only women but geeks as well. Of course no one is forcing anyone to send in their guns to them to get a face-lift, but just the fact that it’s an option seems wrong; especially since it has the potential to get into the wrong hands, and by the wrong hands, we mean kids might accidentally think this is a toy. This is one item pixels don’t belong on… and don’t you love the Breast Cancer ribbon on it too?

iPad Wings and Other iPad Accessories Have Landed
So the new Apple tablet has finally arrived and instead of talking about what it can and can’t do, lets talk about what’s most important! And that is the accessories that will be coming out for this baby – it’s dress-up time. The creative folks over at Etsy already have iPad Wings (hardy har har) because like the designer behind it says “Every woman knows that wings make pads”. These stick on decals won’t really protect or do anything remotely useful for the iPad, but it will probably make you the butt of many jokes. On a more serious note, Griffin has already released some cases: The Elan Sleeve, Flex Grip, and Jumper. All of them aim to protect your new baby, but are not really that fashionable or even that pretty.

PSA: possible AT&T ETF settlement
This one could be useful for (former) AT&T customers – there’s a class action lawsuit against AT&T’s ETF provisions which could also provide a benefit to people who never paid an ETF. The web site explains it as follows: This Settlement will provide the benefits discussed below to qualifying former customers of AT&T Mobility or its predecessors who were charged a flat-rate ETF between and including January 1, 1998 and November 4, 2009, and qualifying current customers of AT&T Mobility who had a flat-rate ETF provision in their subscriber agreement(s) as of November 4, 2009. YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR BENEFITS WHETHER OR NOT YOU PAID A FLAT-RATE ETF. Three categories of benefits are available. Submit your claim under the category that describes your situation.

HTC Snap Cell Phone Review–Great Controls!
So I finally got my hands on an HTC Snap cell phone to try out, and it was kind of a surprise to me. Despite the fact that the thing LOOKED like a Blackberry, it actually offered a much better control scheme, as far as I was concerned. But that wasn’t all it offered. The HTC Snap comes with a Qualcomm MSM 7225 processor with Windows Mobile 6.1. It has a hundred and ninety two megs of onboard memory, and a 2.4 inch LCD display. It comes with a trackball and a full QWERTY keyboard, bluetooth connectivity, Wi-fi, a two megapixel camera, support for a variety of different audio and video formats, and a battery that offers a maximum of five hours of talk time on a single charge. The HTC Snap’s trackball, much unlike the Blackberry’s, wasn’t overly sensitive and managed to easily select from item to item without spontaneously shooting from one side of the display to the other. So when you couple together solid controls with a variety of features, you get a really impressive phone.
