Special Report: Nokia & The Road to HD Video Capture. Chapter 11

Yeah, I know I go on about this a lot and you’re all probably sick of reading about it here, but video capture plus basic computing functionality was the reason why I championed Nokia back in 2006. Nokia, it’s time to change up a gear. The real zoom of the N86 is arguably the only video capture improvement that Nokia have brought to market since the camcorder class video capture of the N93. I wouldn’t mind, but the N93 will be four years old this summer.

iDrift for iPad racing games, if any

I just finished reporting on Nokia’s Ovi Labs Racing , and if that game were available for the iPad, this would be the peripheral that you need. This iDraft, a concept model from designer Micheal Greenberg, definitely looks like “the” accessory to have for racing games. Now, if only the iPad had racing games. Forget Branded Mobile Apps, Sponsorships Are Making A Comeback In Mobile Marketing

Mobile apps, and especially branded apps, are all the rage now-a-days, but a resurgence in the lost art of sponsorship is making a comeback, and brands are shifting their thinking because of it. Steve Smith of MediaPost published a great article recently that talks about sponsorships in terms of mobile marketing, and what benefits the concept provides over branded apps.  Marketers are increasingly realizing that not every brand translates easily into the kind of utility consumers really want on their phone, and thus sponsorships are becoming a more attractive option

MoneyBook updated to 1.4.1: new budget mode available [iPhone App Updates]

MoneyBook (review here ) is a great little monthly budget manager, complete with a gorgeous UI and a complete history to track your spending. The update before this one added “incomings” to the app, which addressed a major shortcoming in the system: we have to earn money before we spend it, and it’s nice to track that, too

What’s The Difference Between Tier 1, 2 and 3 Carriers, And Who Are They In The US?

Delving into the technical aspects of wireless carriers and how they operate, one interesting concept relates to how the carriers access and distribute its network backbone- meaning mobile voice and data services.  You’ve likely heard the terms “tier-1″ or tier-2″ carriers, but what does it mean and how do the major US carriers stack up? Put simply, a tier-1 carrier possess a network in which it’s the sole operator- meaning it has a direct connection to the Internet and the networks it uses to deliver voice and data services.  Similarly, a tier-2 carrier operates the same way, except it may get a portion of its network from a tier-1 operator by way of a concept known as “peering,” which can be loosely defined as piggybacking onto the network already in place by a tier-1 source.

How To Make Your iPhone Look Like an iPad

I’ve never really understood the fascination some folks seem to have with making their one mobile device look very much like a completely different one – making a Windows Mobile phone look like an iPhone, or an iPhone look like a Blackberry or a Windows machine, and so on. So even though I’m already quite the iPad fanboy, I’ve got no interest in turning my iPhone into a mini iPad mockup. For those who do appreciate making these sort of transformations, good news – there are already several iPad themes out for the iPhone (if you’re jailbroken of course and running Winterboard). Engadget’s got a post up with a video that shows you how to combine an iPad theme with the Shrink app to reduce your icon size and other effects to bring the iPad UI to your iPhone. Check it out here if you fancy a bit of the iPad touch on your iPhone: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/30/ipad-ui-gets-ported-to-the-iphone-and-ipod-touch/ © PatrickJ for Just Another iPhone Blog , 2010.
