Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) has released a new firmware update (version 20.0.005) for its low-end touchscreen smartphone – 5230. Here’s what’s new: Kinetic scrolling is included in the main menu Ovi Sync has been added to the desktop Music player is improved GPS allows for faster fix on your location Some of the existing apps have been updated In addition, there are tons of under the hood changes that further improve the stability, though it’s fair to add that even the earlier firmware (v12) provided a pretty stable experience. Moreover, the performance of the device has been improved as well, and now it takes less time for the opening and closing of apps

Symbian released its web application development tools, making application development on the platform “as easy as creating a webpage.” In other words, any web developer with a knowledge of HTML, CSS and some JavaScript can create mobile apps that run on Symbian smartphones, including the newly unveiled Nokia N8 . The good thing about these tools is that they allow accessing even some of the phone’s deep device capabilities — including contacts, camera, sensors, location, etc. — with JavaScript (there are special APIs for accessing phone-specific features).

TUAW reported recently that Apple has surpassed Motorola to become the largest handset maker in the US. I actually think Motorola has some very interesting devices on the market now (the Droid is a beautiful, solid slider), but I can’t help but grin about iPhones usurping the Moto Razr throne. I hated that phone and its interface, so there’s a sick little bit of satisfaction that I feel about Apple’s 8.8 million to Motorola’s 8.5 million handsets sold (in the first quarter of 2010).
