GetJar Surpasses 1 Billion Mobile App Downloads, Second Only To Apple

GetJar is one of those companies that’s seen huge success, but revels in relative obscurity from mainstream media.  That may change, as the company today announced that users have downloaded over 1 billion mobile apps from its so-called “supermarket of mobile apps.” GetJar bills itself the only independent, multi-platform application store, and now is the second largest after Apple’s App Store.  What sets it apart is that it doesn’t focus on one platform, device or OS, but rather a comprehensive repository of apps for any device.  The company has said its most popular app downloads include Opera Mini, Facebook and eBuddy. “We’re delighted to have reached this milestone in mobile app history,” said GetJar CEO Ilja Laurs, in prepared statement.

Foursquare Tries To Add Value To Badges With “Badge Rewards”

Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley took the stage today at the Mashable Media Summit to discuss his company’s growth and future plans, with one interesting tidbit being the introduction of “badge rewards.” In trying to solve the problem of so-called “badge fatigue,” Foursquare plans to experiment with ways to add value to badges by way of creating the equivalent to a modern day VIP program through the use of special-use badges.  One example Crowley used on stage was Internet Week itself, whereby users who check-in at an Internet Week venue will unlock a special badge.

Review: Cat Physics for iPhone

If you’re a follower of Donut Games like I am, you were probably excited to see that Cat Physics was released to the Appstore.  From Rat on the Run to Comet Racer , the iPhone games that Donut Games release can always be counted on for some quick fun.  It seems that one of the main focuses of Donut Games’ development is that the games have to be suited to being played in a mobile environment.  If you only have 2 minutes to play a game while you’re on the bus, you’ll be safe in assuming that it will be enough time to finish one of the levels in a Donut game.

Apple Modifies iOS Developer Terms (Again) To Allow “Limited” Analytics Collection

After creating a stir of controversy following a change to its developer agreement, Apple today announced another change aimed at calming down those who felt the previous terms were unfair. The company has again modified the relevant portion of its developer agreement, Section 3.3.9, to at least partially open the door to limited data collection for analytics purposes, saying “If you compare and contrast with Apple’s earlier version, you’ll see the message is clear: It’s OK to collect user data to help sell ads — though you will need to get their permission to do so.” The new terms require that any analytics company receiving data must be an “independent advertising service provider whose primary business is serving mobile ads.”  What that means is that an advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple would not qualify as independent
