DROID X shortage?

This isn’t looking too good. First screen issues , and now delays? According to Verizon’s website, all new orders of the DROID X won’t ship until August 3rd. Same thing happened to the DROID Incredible when it launched, so it’s definitely an interesting scenario. I called a few of my local Verizon stores, and most of them were sold out.

Apple 3rd Quarter Earnings Beat Expectations

Apple has announced its 3rd quarter earnings. And, once again, the tech giant beat the street. On Tuesday after the close of trading on Wall Street, the Cupertino-based technology juggernaut blew consensus estimates out of the water (which had previously forecast 3Q earnings of $14.75 billion) with actual earnings totaling $15.74 billion. The company’s Q4 revenue guidance comes in at $18 billion vs.

Will “Checking In” Soon Become Obsolete? Mark Cuban Thinks So…

With LBS startups and the art of “checking in” still evolving as a brand new concept, some are already speculating that an entirely new breed of location-based social networking will replace it, effectively making the concept as we know it all but obsolete. Though that may sound over the top, it’s exactly the opinion of Mark Cuban, who recently posted on his blog about a new company he’s just invested in that’s building the “next generation” of LBS social networking.  The idea is centered around facial recognition and real-time video imagery of specific locations, so instead of checking in, the next iteration of LBS apps would already know you’re there. “I just invested in a company that takes video of an area and can tell you exactly how many people are in the capture area at any given time,” said Cuban in his post.  ”It’s great for traffic patterns, security, and much more.  We are posting cameras in certain environments where anonymity is required, and we don’t and won’t capture faces or anything that could identify an individual.  We will simply provide incredibly accurate traffic information and patterns

Brightkite Ups The Ante With “Badge Levels” For Better Loyalty & Rewards Programs

Brightkite has been known to experiment with badges for its location-based social networking service, but besides a partnership with Starbucks, has been dormant on the topic- until now. The startup has introduced levels to its badges, based on a variety of check-ins and other social functions, like uploading photos.  For example, if you use Brightkite’s mobile website or one of their mobile apps to post 10 photos, you’ll earn a ‘Slick pic’ badge at level 1

Juniper Forecast: Mobile App Downloads To Reach 25 Billion By 2015

A new report published today by Juniper Research suggests mobile app downloads will surpass 25 billion by 2015, up from just 2.6 billion in 2009. According to the report, players across the mobile value chain are seeking to emulate Apple’s success with the App Store by launching their own branded storefronts, such as the ‘Mobile Market’ from China Unicom, ‘Airtel App Central’ from Bharti and the ‘Apps & Games Shop’ on Vodafone 360

Awesome Note 4.2 for iPhone: fixes Evernote syncing, sort of

Something about the last update of Awesome Note ($3.99) seems to have broken part of its Evernote syncing capability (or maybe it was Evernote’s Trunk rollout that broke 3rd party syncing?). The problem — which is now sorta-kinda-fixed in v4.2 — was that you could upload notes to Evernote, but not download new ones. It was basically a one-way sync every time, but the syncing dialogue never showed you any problems.

Waterfield updates Smart Case and Suede Jacket for iPhone 4

Smart case left; Suede Jacket right The Waterfield Smart Case ($39 / $45 with clip) and Suede Jacket ($10 / $14 with pocket) have been around for quite a while now, and I think they’re both excellent products. The Smart Case is extremely durable and does a fantastic job of keeping the iPhone inside, and the Suede Jacket is just a decent way to keep your iPhone scratch-free while it’s in your pocket. Both cases are both very, very well made and should last you a while.

British Airways Updates Mobile App

With all the talk in the last few days surrounding the flaws in the design of the iPhone 4 antenna, it is easy to begin to overlook the positive impact that the iPhone in all its guises has had on the mobile industry as a whole. The iPhone is mainly responsible for kick-starting the whole mobile application industry, delivering bright, colourful applications that were easy to browse, purchase and install. Apple do receive criticism for the way they control the whole App Store experience, but the quality control is something that helps deliver a consistently high level user experience across all applications. Apps come in many forms, from games to useful utilities, and businesses are starting to see the benefit of giving access to their content on the move, and recently British Airways updated their iPhone app, and have also made it accessible to users of Android devices and RIM BlackBerry handsets, too.

It’s now possible to know where you’re friends are at, regardless of whether they checked-in or not.  The addition takes advantage of the background location feature of the iPhone and Android platforms, and comes with explicit sharing options to manage what’s shared and how often.
