Social Media and Mobile Tech Jobs Show Strongest Growth in 2009

There are 3 phrases that have rarely been spoken in the same sentence recently: Jobs 2009,Social Media and Mobile Technology are the exception. According to a report by Indeed, 7 of the 10 fastest growing opportunities of 2009 were social media or mobile-tech related, with Twitter showing the strongest growth. This isn’t surprising, of course, as growth is relative and where we were before as social media was not nearly the buzzword in 2008 as it was in 2009. The important aspect here is that as 2010 rolls through, we should expect the gains to continue and the relationship between the economy and the social web to stay tied hand-in-hand. Until the “next big thing” comes out to replace sites like Twitter and Facebook as valid business needs, we shouldn’t expect anything to change.

All Your Email In One Basket: How Email Use Has Adapted to Mobility

I can still remember the novelty and excitement of writing email messages back in the earliest days of the Internet. At that time – around the early 1990s – the act of dialing up and connecting via a cumbersome modem, logging into an email provider, writing a message and sending it on its way could hardly have been called “easy.” The potential was there, of course, but the actual execution left a whole lot to be desired. Flash forward to today – my entire email history, my contacts, my calender and all of my data is now carried effortlessly in my pocket – and it’s hard to believe that email used to be such a pain. How did I get from there to here?

HipLogic Brings Smartphone Tech To Simple, Mass Market Feature Phones

There’s a lot of opportunities in regards to mobile marketing these days, but many new-age methods rely on the hope that most of the target audience is equipped with smartphones.  Unfortunately, as most marketers know, that’s simply not a reality. HipLogic, a unique startup previously known as Numobiq, has the simple intention of bringing smartphone-like features and capabilities to simple feature phones, or mass market devices.  Put simply, the company’s platform is designed to bring sophisticated applications to the simplest cell phones by keeping all the complexity in the network.  In theory, HipLogic wants to bring the quick, easy interface of the iPhone, Android and Blackberry to more simple-in-nature and lightweight phones that are available for the mass market. By keeping the heavy-lifting in the background, HipLogic’s platform allows users to toggle on a more iPhone-like interface that can bring with it more smartphone-like content such as real-time data, social networking and apps.  It’s all accomplished via a free mobile app that connects the device to HipLogic’s behind-the-scenes technology that incorporates a lightweight JavaScript virtual machine connected to the cloud.  That virtual machine can then aggregate information from network operators and the Web to create mash-ups on the device

The Future Of Mobile Augmented Reality

The concept of augmented reality (AR) is still very much in its infancy, but the opportunities it presents in the areas of mobile marketing, commerce and gaming is more than plentiful.  How far have we come in bringing AR to fruition and what does the future hold for the concept? A new report from Juniper Research projects the technology combining the physical world with virtual imagery and information will generate only $2 million in revenue next year, but the projection is set to increase dramatically to nearly $714 million by 2014.  By then, most of that revenue will be derived from things like  paid application downloads, subscription-based services and advertising, according to Juniper

The Genio range of handsets from Samsung, starting with the S3650 which is also being sold under the Genio Touch product name, is proving to be very popular. Acer Neo Touch F1 Review

Acer should not be an unknown name to many purchasers of mobile electronics; they have been producing laptops for quite a while now. In fact, they are the leading laptop manufacturer in the world, and second only to HP in computer manufacture. Acer is a fairly new name in the world of mobile phone manufacture though, and really their path in this industry has started to come about since their acquisition of E-Ten products. E-Ten had started promoting its own brand, Glofiish, but since the acquisition all products will be branded with the Acer name.

NFC Mobile Phone Use to Explode by 2014

Juniper Research has published their forecast that in five years, one in every six mobile subscribers in the world will possess a mobile phone enabled with Near Field Communications capabilities. The consequences, of course, for businesses, consumers, and mobile marketers will be as significant as they are promising. According to Juniper’s research, the NFC report illustrated that payments and retail transactions (including mobile coupons) will contribute dramatically in transforming the cell phone into a widespread payment tool and an unprecedented mechanism for sales and promotional opportunities for retailers.

iPhone Helps With Fear of Flying

lot of people miss out on traveling since they suffer from a fear of flying but a new iPhone application might be able to help them calm their nerves and get on a plane.  I honestly never thought of a phone being used for something like this but I think it’s a great idea. Virgin Atlantic Airways has launched an app for its Flying Without Fear course proving yet again that Virgin Atlantic president, Richard Branson , is on a mission to accomplish just about everything he possibly can in life. “Our first iPhone app will bring the benefits of our successful Flying Without Fear course to millions of people around the world who are now using mobile technology to make their lives better,” Branson said.  “The app will put many travelers at ease and enable them to prepare for their first Virgin Atlantic flight.” The app features an introduction by Branson and then offers a number of resources to users including relaxation exercises and an in-flight explanation of a flight.  I’d love to see what this looks like even though I’m not really afraid of flying

RIM Unveils BlackBerry Storm 2, Challenges iPhone

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion today unveiled the Storm 2, a new version of its touch screen Storm smartphone, marking its latest move in the battle with Apple’s iPhone. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company said the Storm 2 retains the original Storm’s clickable touch screen interface, but improves upon it with faster typing and “multi-touch” capabilities, which allows users to type on more than just one part of the screen at a time. The Storm, RIM’s first phone without a physical keyboard, was met with limited success when it launched late last year. Many users complained about its odd typing mechanism — where the whole screen moved with each tap on the virtual keyboard — and claimed that they had to press too hard on the touch screen. RIM said the new Storm 2 solves that problem with its new SurePress technology — promising that clicking the display will be “effortless” and that device will even know if a finger is “resting” on the keypad or typing
