Joking Computer wants you to rate its puns
If you think the world is full of enough people making bad jokes, then you may not be delighted to hear that Scottish scientists have just invented a computer (and website) that makes bad jokes too. The Joking Computer software…

Plextor ships PX-B120U USB-powered Blu-ray drive for $100
We aren’t saying your nifty new netbook can actually handle the stresses of playing back a Blu-ray Disc, but if your USB-equipped laptop has the oomph, Plextor has a new device to bring the spoils of BD to your previously lackluster machine.

Text’nDrive lets you hear, send emails while on the road
With more and more states cracking down on cell phone use while driving, it’s becoming tougher to get away with emailing when you’re on the road. Not that you should anyway. Distracted driving puts others at harm, nevermind yourself and anyone in the car with you.

MSI launches Wind12 U230 ‘Light,’ shaves two inches and 30 clamshells from predecessor’s hide
Are MSI’s 12.1-inch netbooks a hair too large for you? Wonder of wonders, there’s a smaller version that’s practically exactly the same inside. Though the new MSI Wind12 U230 Light confusingly weighs just the same as its predecessor (3.3 pounds) and is still 1.22 inches thick, it’s got a smaller 11.6-inch matte LCD screen that makes it two inches shorter in either direction on a horizontal plane. You’re still getting the same 1,366 x 768 display, 1.6GHz Athlon Neo MV-40 processor, 2GB of RAM, Radeon HD 3200 graphics, 250GB hard drive and sub-par four hours of battery life, but MSI did think to trim the fat in one last direction, and knocked $30 off the price

Brother AiRScouter AR retina scanning display demonstrated
Brother has been showing off its latest head-mounted display , and while the Brother AiRScouter can’t exactly be described as discreet, if you could put up with the confused glances the functionality could be pretty handy. The AiRScouter uses a retinal scanning display, which basically projects a virtual image directly onto the retina. The idea is, you wear the AiRScouter and have a dynamic projected screen constantly in your vision at all times

ARM and TSMC team up for tinier 20nm Cortex SOCs
It’s no secret that ARM ideas are powering much of the mobile revolution these days, but the company doesn’t print its own systems-on-a-chip, that duty gets outsourced to silicon foundries — like TSMC , who just got all buddy-buddy with the firm to transition future smartphone chips to the 28nm and obscenely tiny 20nm high-k metal gate processes. (We’re not sure what this means for GlobalFoundries, who had a similar deal earlier this year.) As per usual with a die size reduction, ARM chips will see higher speed and have decreased power consumption, but since 20nm is (relatively) unexplored territory it could be years before chips hit the market

Panasonic adds Blu-ray 3D/HDD all-in-one plasmas; redesigned, rechargeable 3D glasses in Japan
Panasonic Japan’s push to bring 3D to wider audiences means more than just offering it in smaller HDTVs . The RT2B series plasmas announced today can record TV broadcasts onto their hard discs or Blu-ray drives, and are the first all-in-ones that play Blu-ray 3D movies as well. Available in 42- and 46-inch versions, it’s unlikely we’ll see them on this side of the Pacific, but much more likely to make the jump are some new 3D glasses (pictures after the break.) Now available in different sizes for the whole family, they also include sealed batteries rechargeable by USB, as opposed to the current one-size-fits-all design that relies on a replaceable watch battery. Two hours charging via USB should equal 30 hours of watching, and at 38g, Panasonic’s claiming the small kid-sized TY-EW3D2SW active shutter glasses are the lightest around.

Droid 2 and Android 2.2 fated to be together from the start, according to latest leaks
You know, some people get married with less information about their partner than we already have about the Droid 2 . Today, we have a pair of independent leaks seemingly confirming that the second coming of Moto’s QWERTY-sportin’ Doer will be running Android 2.2 right out of the gate. Droid Life has a tipster that’s apparently spent some quality time with the device, describing its keyboard as “phenomenal” and pointing out that it feels notably snappier than the original . The Froyo connection is reiterated by Phandroid ‘s sources, which provide images of Verizon’s device database indicating once again that Android 2.2 and Droid 2 will be an appropriately matched pair when the launch codes get entered (last mooted for August 12 ) and this thing finally hits retail. Droid 2 and Android 2.2 fated to be together from the start, according to latest leaks originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 03:25:00 EDT.

Panasonic’s new Lumix lineup: LX5, FZ40, FZ100, FX700, and TS10 all official
You ready to get Lumix’d to the max? Panasonic has five new point-and-shooters prepped for this fall, headlined by the well-leaked LX5 . That camera aims to keep what was good about the stylish, high-end LX3 while pushing image quality up a notch, with better image processing and a better lens in front of the same 10.1 megapixel CCD resulting in better low light performance. There’s also HD recording in AVCHD Lite at 720p. The FZ40 and FZ100 super zoomers are very similar in their 24x zoom lenses and 14.1 megapixels, but the latter can record 1080p and pull off some high speed burst shooting, while the former is constrained to 720p.

Honda will bring plug-in hybrids, full EVs to United States in 2012
Though they probably won’t look anything like Honda’s adorable EV-N , the Japanese automaker’s got some new technological vehicles up its sleeves — in a speech today, Honda CEO Takanobu Ito formally announced plans to produce a plug-in hybrid competitor for Toyota’s flashy new PHEV Prius by 2012, which rumor has it will sport an estimated fuel economy (when it’s using fuel, we assume) of roughly around 140 miles per gallon. Better still, a completely battery-powered electrical vehicle will also go on sale by 2012, and you won’t have to fly to Japan to try them out, as they’re slated for the States as well. Hydrogen fuel cells are apparently still Honda’s long-term solution, though the FCX Clarity received only a passing mention

Nokia’s New Concept Phone that Stands Up Itself
Nokia today unearthed an innovative concept phone named Kinetic that could stands up to alert users on incoming calls, emails, and text messages. This cool concept phone was developed by British designer Jeremy Innes-Hopkins. How the Kinetic works is by having an electromagnet built into a curved base that shifts the weight of the phone so that the phone could roll up or roll down when receiving an alert. “It makes receiving a call, text, email or alarm more playful by converting digital information into kinetic movement,” Innes-Hopkins said. “The stand up feature also has potential for video calling, without the need to hold your phone.”

AT&T’s Pantech Pursuit. Quick review
Word of the Pantech Pursuit, one of Pantech’s latest touchscreen phones, hit the wires earlier this year in an AT&T press release alongside several other like-minded Quick Messaging Devices (QMD), including the Pantech Link, Samsung Strive, and Samsung Sunburst. The Samsung phones were pictured all over the place, but Pantech was much more shy, only giving basic specs on its new offerings. When I finally was able to look at the Pursuit up close and personal, pictures were not available. I wasn’t allowed to take pictures of it, though I could play with it as much as I wanted to and write up my thoughts and some specs on the device

Pogoplug Drops The Pink, Goes Business Class
By Evan Ackerman I’ve had my Pogoplug for a several months now, and I’m still a big fan… Enough of a fan to have gone and bought a couple for my job (what, you think I blog for a living? HA!). Now I’m kicking myself, though, because Pogoplug is introducing the Pogoplug Biz, which not only includes a whole bunch of useful business-y features, but also comes in a color that isn’t purplish-pink. Chiefly, the Pogoplug Biz is a way of making stuff on your computers (say, projects) available to other people (say, clients) in a way that’s easy for you to manage and easy for them to access. The Biz differs from the regular Pogoplug (which also has this capability) by letting you control the entire process, customizing the Pogoplug interface to integrate directly with your business and avoiding the inevitable question from your clients of “what the heck is a Pogoplug and why do I have to get my files from it?” There’s a whole host of other cool stuff that you can do with the Pogoplug Biz, and we’ve got the entire rundown, after the jump.
