Video: Track and Protect for Android review

This is a quick review of Track and Protect, a consumer security application for Android and Symbian smartphones. TnP allows you to locate you phone if stolen, and remotely take photos, initiate calls, lock or wipe the phone, and even sound an alarm. It will also send you a text message if the thief inserts a new SIM card. It’s a very cool application that you ought to check out. Watch the video here

GetJar Surpasses 1 Billion Mobile App Downloads, Second Only To Apple

GetJar is one of those companies that’s seen huge success, but revels in relative obscurity from mainstream media.  That may change, as the company today announced that users have downloaded over 1 billion mobile apps from its so-called “supermarket of mobile apps.” GetJar bills itself the only independent, multi-platform application store, and now is the second largest after Apple’s App Store.  What sets it apart is that it doesn’t focus on one platform, device or OS, but rather a comprehensive repository of apps for any device.  The company has said its most popular app downloads include Opera Mini, Facebook and eBuddy. “We’re delighted to have reached this milestone in mobile app history,” said GetJar CEO Ilja Laurs, in prepared statement.

Revised iOS ad policy cuts independents a break, makes it tougher for Google

It comes as no surprise — since Steve Jobs hinted at it during D8 — that Apple has once again revised the controversial section 3.3.9 of its iOS developer agreement. Section 3.3.9 deals specifically with what App Store applications can and cannot do when it comes to the collection of user and device data. The new modifications seem to be more lenient towards independent ad agencies; allowing them to collect user data after obtaining explicit permission from Apple to do so.

Review: Cat Physics for iPhone

If you’re a follower of Donut Games like I am, you were probably excited to see that Cat Physics was released to the Appstore.  From Rat on the Run to Comet Racer , the iPhone games that Donut Games release can always be counted on for some quick fun.  It seems that one of the main focuses of Donut Games’ development is that the games have to be suited to being played in a mobile environment.  If you only have 2 minutes to play a game while you’re on the bus, you’ll be safe in assuming that it will be enough time to finish one of the levels in a Donut game.

The definitive guide to BlackBerry Messenger revisited

In any technology realm, change is a constant. We see not only new software programs frequently, but we also see hardware upgrades seemingly every year. For instance, RIM has dropped a new major model in each of the past three years, and we’ll likely see a further Bold update, beyond the 9650, before 2010 is over. RIM has also been quick on the software upgrades, pushing out OS 4.5, then 5.0, and soon 6.0 in a relatively short span.

iPhone 4, iPad and Samsung Wave apparently share the same CPU core

Back in January, when Apple announced the iPad , the Cupertino company has also introduced a new 1GHz “Apple A4 chip.” The A4 chip is also included in the just-announced iPhone 4 , and Steve Jobs made quite a big deal out of this, saying the chip is designed by Apple’s own team. That may be true, but Canada-based research firm UBM TechInsights has it that said A4 chip “features the same 1 GHz ARM CORTEX A8 core” that powers the Wave S8500 – namely the S5PC110A01 application processor (manufactured by Samsung)

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace regulations, features detailed

Ars Technica has an interesting write-up on the rules and regulations developers will have to follow in order to publish to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. For the most part, Microsoft’s terms seem pretty standard – especially when compared to other mobile application ecosystems such as Android’s Market or Apple’s App Store — however, there are a few exceptions. For starters, a developer account will be priced at $99, which is slightly more than Android’s $0 price point but right on par with Apple’s iPhone Developer account. The $99 includes an unlimited number of paid application submissions and 5 free-applications submissions per year; additional free-app submissions will cost $19.99. This should, as Ars put it, “discourage mass submissions of junk applications.” Moving on, WP7 Store will allow applications to have time-limited, fully-featured trials — thank you Microsoft! Ars goes on to point out that: “Many of the free programs on Apple’s store are just cut-down versions of other, paid applications; with Marketplace’s built-in support of trials these free programs might not be necessary.” Right on
