iCall VoIP now available over 3G on iPhone/iPod Touch, possibly on iPad?
An update to the iPhone developer SDK now enables Apple iPhone and iPod Touch users to make VoIP calls over cellular networks. The application, dubbed iCall, is the only one in the Apple App Store at this current moment that can allow for VoIP over 3G connections. The other obvious question at the moment is, will the iPad be equipped with this feature? Apple’s newly announced tablet has app support, 3G, Wi-Fi, microphone, and speaker, all that’s needed for VoIP calls. If so, then the iPad may truly lives up to its hype as an “oversized iPhone”

iPad: The Good, The Bad, and the Meh
OK, so I have given myself a whopping 7 hours to think about the iPad, and while conventional wisdom might say I need to wait 2 months and actually hold one to truly form my opinion of the device, my brain is so evolved, and my “Awesome detector” so refined, that I can render a final judgment at record speed. So sit back, and prepare to learn the Good, the Bad, and the Meh about the iPad

Apple lifts VoIP over cellular restrictions in new iPhone SDK
Great news for the VoIP world: iCall, the maker of the iCall VoIP iPhone app that can catch a GSM call and flip it over to WiFi, has issued a press release saying that the new iPhone SDK allows for VoIP over 3G cellular connections. Previously such calls had to be made over WiFi, since AT&T’s network (or someone well acquainted with AT&T’s network) didn’t think it was man enough to take the VoIP traffic. Interestingly, iCall says its 3G-friendly VoIP app is available now, and is the first and only such app in the App Store — which seems like some pretty quick turnaround on everyone’s part, but apparently the 3G restriction wasn’t anything to do with the software itself, but instead a server-side block. We just tested this out and it totally works, and while we’ll be looking for more verification that the ban has indeed been lifted, it sounds like it’s time for some cheaply connected international parties in the streets

Why old media loves Apple’s newest thing
The cream of the New York publishing industry rose to the occasion of the Apple iPad launch, then sat in the shadows for almost an hour as chief executive officer Steve Jobs extolled the gadget’s utility for just about everything – gaming, networking, browsing, watching videos – except reading. The legendary Kindle-killer of the book trade’s imagination made no appearance among the iPad’s multiple personalities. But then Mr. Jobs introduced the print brigade, beginning with a New York Times executive. As the executive previewed a nimble, full-colour application of the influential newspaper, it became obvious how important the iPad was to him and his competitors

iPhone SDK calls out nonexistent iPad cam, confirms split views and popovers are iPad-specific
iPhone owners holding out hope that OS 3.2 would bring some of these fancy new iPad spoils to their devices might be in for a disappointment, because two of the big ones — split view and popovers — are both referred to in Apple’s updated human interface guidelines as “iPad-only.” Realistically, this shouldn’t come as a surprise; both of these UI elements were built to shine on larger displays, and it’s hard to say how you could make either one of them work on HVGA — but it’s important for devs to note that heavily investing in these are definitely going to make it difficult to make their apps compatible across all iPhone OS-powered devices.

GORequest iPhone app lets you quickly report issues to the City Hall
The same day when Apple unveiled its “revolutionary” iPad tablet , Government Outreach announced a new iPhone application that should help citizens in dozens of US cities and counties report various issues to their City Hall (issues like “potholes that need filling, barking dogs that need quieting, and graffiti that needs removing”). The new iPhone app is called GORequest (an unfortunate name , I’d say, although their intention is to sound like “GO request” and not “gore quest”) and uses your iPhone’s GPS and camera capabilities. You just have to “open the app, select an issue, take a picture, and tap submit” – your issues will then be sent “directly to the staff member at city hall who can fix it.” Some of the cities where you’ll be able to use the GORequest iPhone app include Santa Monica, CA, Queen Creek, AZ, and Arvada, CO. “We’ve already helped many agencies around the country dramatically improve customer service through the web, but with GORequest for the iPhone they can now connect with residents on the go,” declared Government Outreach president Kendall Smith. Government Outreach doesn’t say where you can get its app from, but you’ll probably find it in the App Store.

The Apple iPad: A First Look
There has been a lot of buzz around the Apple Tablet these past few months, mainly because the people at Apple kept all the info uber exclusive. At an Apple product event, it was announced the rumored Apple tablet, called the iPad, does in fact exist and is to be expected in stores by July 2010. It will come with its very own app store and over 1,400 apps

The iPad runs the iPhone OS and “almost all” iPhone apps and uses the ePub format for books.
