Elvis Presley Goes Mobile

Elvis may be gone, but he certainly isn’t forgotten. On the perennial list of top celebrity earners who just happen to be dead, Elvis Presley remains both a hot brand and lucrative industry – a veritable business of music, merchandise, and memorabilia that continues to drive revenue for the many employed by all things Elvis. It’s no wonder then that Elvis has finally arrived in the world of mobile marketing. To commemorate a series of events honoring the 75th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s birth next month, Elvis Presley Enterprises is preparing to launch a free Elvis Mobile app for Apple’s iPhone and iTouch.

Palm Pre to hit the Czech Republic

So far, Palm’s Pre has not hit Eastern shores. In fact, it has not hit many shores at all – Pre availability can still be counted on your fingers. Nevertheless, Palm seems to be committed to increase its reach slowly but surely – and the Czech Republic could be the next target. Dow Jones Newswires reports the following: … We’ll certainly include Palm Pre in our product offering but at the moment I can’t tell when exactly,” T-O2 spokesman Martin Zabka told Dow Jones Newswires, adding the Palm Pre’s launch will likely be during next year. … Not much to add here…

Cloud benefits and risks highlighted in ENISA report

The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) has issued one of the most comprehensive reports on the security risks and benefits of cloud computing. The report takes an impartial look at the cloud phenomena, and it starts out with the obvious—that is, cloud computing’s benefits of ease of access, scalability, instant provisioning and monetary savings are undisputable, but the biggest issue holding people back is the security concern. In many cases, the concern over security is one of perception. We tend to think that things are more secure if we can put our hands on it. But the ENISA paper gets into more specific detail about precisely what the top security risks are: Loss of governance

Scaling Up vs Scaling Out Exchange Server 2007 Roles Part 3 – Mailbox Servers

In part 1 of this series I wrote about scaling Transport servers , and in part 2 I wrote about scaling Client Access servers .  In this third and final post in the series I will look at scaling of Mailbox servers. Mailbox Servers The role of the Mailbox server for Exchange Server 2007 is to host the mailbox and public folder databases for the organization.  In other words this is where all of the email, calendar, and other Exchange data is stored. The Mailbox server accepts direct MAPI connections from Microsoft Outlook clients, but also receives other connections such as Outlook Web Access and ActiveSync via the Client Access server. As the backend of the Exchange system the Mailbox server is usually located on the most powerful hardware and is often configured for high availability .  Because of the direct client access to the Mailbox server any performance problem is likely to be noticed immediately by end users, unlike say the Hub Transport server that may deliver mail slowly during periods of poor performance but this may actually go unnoticed by the users. As an organization sends and receives email throughout the day the Mailbox server processes these transactions in its databases.  This means that careful attention needs to be paid to the disk performance of the Mailbox server, but attention also needs to be given to the processor and memory.

Video: Twitter on the Nokia N900: via browser versus via app (Mauku)

This video was made a couple of days ago and was initially just to show Mauku running on the N900. It’s a very simple, fast and easy to use twitter application, getting you to your twitter feed and sending out tweets quickly – respond/retweet and check out other people’s posted links. To get Mauku , Go to the App Manager Click Downloads You’ll find Mauku either from “Internet & Networking” category or from “All” Just click “Mauku”, check “I understand and agree” and “continue” (Another great thing about the N900 and Maemo 5 is that it’s so easy to install an application. No deciding whether to install on Memory card, phone or mass memory, or having to accept certificate after certificate…Click install – Done.) Whilst it’s fantastic that the N900 can load up websites like your computer does ( check out N900 with YouTube – just fantastic! ), some sites like twitter.com do need a little work around for mobile and the smaller screen. Mauku is great for getting your tweets out quickly on the go and interacting with your feeds, but it doesn’t offer the same functionality as Nokia’s favourite Twitter app: Gravity

7-Eleven Tries Out Mobile Marketing with Free Drinks

Want a free Slurpee with that? This month, about 200 7-Eleven stores in San Diego are testing a GMR Marketing campaign where users can get free drinks using UBC bar codes. For customers without Internet access on their mobile phones, the coupon can be redeemed with a numeric code. The test, which will run through Dec 31, asks consumers to send a text with the word “FAST” (or fast in Spanish, “RAPIDO”) to “72579.” In return, they will receive a message for a free beverage at 7-Eleven stores.

HTC Mobile Phones in 2010

It takes a long time to produce a top end mobile phone, with many months passing from first concept drawings to final production. Any leading manufacturer worth its salt will have a roadmap of handsets projected 6 – 12 months in advance, and that information is jealously guarded to avoid leaking information to rival manufacturers. Occasionally though, certain information does leak out, be it by a mis-placed slide at a presentation or deliberately placed info supplied by the manufacturer themselves to generate internet chatter and interest in forth-coming devices. How the information leaked about the HTC roadmap came about, I’m not too sure, but it does give us a chance to look ahead to devices that will be on the market and in our pockets in 2010. The devices mentioned are all either Windows Mobile or Android.

New writer on mynokiablog! Welcome, llaadd aka Hiren Lad!

Since I started posting at mynokiablog back in April/May, a frequent visitor and commenter has always been Hiren. As well as participating in discussions, he’s been a big help in pointing out some mistakes in posts like inserting a wrong video or setting that video to private. I’m still really surprised of the readership mynokiablog is getting, and to maintain that new momentum (especially with my dissertation begging for attention) I’m always looking to expand the writer base for mynokiablog. Last night Hiren agreed to join mynokiablog team. In fact, he’s already got a post up – check it out: My mini N900 review (loaded with screenshots) About Hiren: Hiren’s a Warwick University Graduate and achieved MEng in Electronic Engineering with Business Management

Review: iMojito, a pleather wallet and pouch combo for the iPhone 3GS

The iMojito is an iPhone pouch with three extra slots for important cards or cash — you know, the things you’re probably used to keeping in a wallet. It’s a product that makes a lot of sense, and I opted to take a look at one because I thought that using one for a little while might open me up to another way of carrying my gear around.

Minor Argh: My App Store isn’t updating properly

What the heck is wrong with my App Store lately? For the past six days it’s been telling me to update bloody Rock Band (sorry RB, I don’t mean to take this out on you!) to the latest version when, in fact, I’ve been playing the latest version since the App Store told me about it last week. I’ve updated the game a good three or four times over the Mac and on the iPhone, and it’s proved to be a waste of time and bandwidth.

Palm sued over webOS PDF technology

Palm’s webOS is based heavily on all kinds of open-source technology: in fact, the Pre even ships with a PDF file detailing the various projects involved and their licenses. Unfortunately, it looks like the boys in Orange forgot about one crucial GPL-licensed bit of technology: the very PDF rendering engine which is used for displaying the aforementioned file (among others). Yahoo Finance reports the following: … San Rafael-based Artifex Software Inc. said Friday it filed a suit in the U.S. District Court for northern California because Palm had integrated its muPDF program into Palm Pre devices since their launch in June.
