Review: Ace Combat Xi Skies of Incursion for iPhone
[This is a joint review written by Thomas and JoeT. Joe's remarks are in italics] I had been looking forward to the iPhone release of Ace Combat XI ever since I heard about it. This game marks the first time I’ve ever used an accelerometer to fly a plane, and I think it worked out for the most part. The game feels like an Ace Combat experience with all of the menu presentation, mission briefings, and the circuitous dogfights where you just need that precious half of a second to obtain a missile lock.

WPP’s Sir Martin Sorrell Sees Big Growth in Mobile Marketing
Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of the advertising group WPP, predicts a slow growth in the upcoming year for the advertising industry, but sees great potential in mobile advertising and marketing in the coming years, most notably in countries like China and India where mobile usage is exploding. A recent study from Magna, part of Interpublic Group, predicted “mobile marketing, well beyond advertising, will likely hold the most promise for… commercial activation going forward.” In response to this, chief executive of WPP Group, Sir Martin Sorrell, told the Media Group that mobile advertising and marketing has a “lot of potential and power,” especially in countries like India and China. The fact that Google is chasing after this market, with its recent purchase of AdMob and other plays in space, prove that the reports are on to something. Google’s moves fuel Sorrell’s belief that the mobile advertising and marketing industries are in infancy now, and bound to take off

Cell Phones For Hearing Impaired Users
I won’t lie. I never really thought about whether hearing impaired individuals could use cell phones. These little devices are so much a part of our culture and, in addition to being a way to keep in touch, they can be used as life-saving tools in an emergency. When you think of it that way, it seems downright tragic that deaf or hard of hearing people are limited in their ability to use them. Sure, they can text message but that’s not quite the same thing, is it? Cornell University Researchers are Cornell saw the need and began working with colleagues to create cell phones that can communicate using sign language . The technology is supposed to allow deaf people “untethered communication in their native language” — exactly the same connectivity available to hearing people, she said. The project started four years ago with the first Mobile ASL (American Sign Language) phone prototypes making their debut last year. They are currently being used by 25 deaf people in the Seattle area. Basically, the researchers built on the videoconferencing platforms being used for distance-learning courses but they had to find a way to compress the video to make it clearer and easier to transmit. Of course, this does drain the phone’s resources so they also had to come up with a way to maximize the cell phone’s battery life

Wifi-enabled Pixi with Verizon frequencies passes FCC
The folks at Sprint’s are likely to gain a new problem in the near future – the FCC has just disclosed the box whose data is below: Just in case: we’re looking at a CDMA Pixi WITH WiFi. Given that Sprint has just released its version of the box, this box is intended either for non-US markets or for Verizon, who most likely aren’t too interested in the Pre anymore. Either way, things could get interesting again soon…

Why there is no native SDK for the webOS
One webOS-related question which keeps popping up over and over again is the one about the native SDK: why is all Pre development restricted to JavaScript? I recently found the following answer on a mailing list – it was posted there by a former Palm insider: Not having a binary interface means Palm has far more flexibility in changing the hardware… already that have two devices with different versions of the ARM core, which means code that was compiled to take advantage of the NEON instructions in the Cortex-A8 on the Pre would fail on the ARM11-based Pixi. It also means they can change a lot of the low-level interfaces and implementations without breaking app code, which is very likely. Maybe my webOS 2.0 they’ll have that level stable enough to support app services — it took Android until the 1.6 OS release to support native shared libraries

Low light photo and flash test: Nokia N97 versus Nokia N900 versus Nokia N82
Here’s some low light photo conditions with the N900; testing out its flash against the N97 and the king of flash, and over 2 years old (absolutely ancient in tech), the N82. I know I harp on about Xenon, but these set of photos demonstrate yet again why it’s just so good! Real xenon flash as opposed to LED, gives you a higher percentage of good looking photos in a wider range of lighting situations. This is especially useful if you’re taking photos of people.

iPhone Sales in China Doing Poorly
It was almost two months ago that Apple finally launched the iPhone in China, hoping to take advantage of the big market in the country. However, what was hoping to be a successful beginning to the iPhone’s run in China, has now turned into a huge disappointment for the folks at Apple. To date, sales in China for the iPhone have only gotten up to approximatel 100,000 units being sold

Metropark Introduces Live Twitter Feeds as You Try on Your Jeans
Twitter, Twitter, Twitter… it seems it has invaded almost everyone’s lives and now it appears it’s following us as we shop too. Metropark, a Los Angeles based specialty store that combines elements of fashion, music and art has launched a custom interactive Twitter interface called Metropark Reverb that directly feeds Twitter comments mentioning Metropark (Twitter name @MetroparkUSA) into numerous plasma televisions in each and every one of their stores. If you like shopping at Metropark your tweet mentioning them will be live for all to see, or if someone annoys you at one particular Metropark store, that will become public knowledge too if you tweet about it. Some of the designer brands you may find there include OBEY, Crash & Burn, Betsey Johnson, Affliction, Monarchy, and premium denim brands like True Religion, Rock and Republic, Frankie B, MEK and Rock Revival. So if you can’t fit into those size 5 jeans, maybe tweet if another Metropark has them in a size 6… and you just may get a response
