The Best Free iPhone Apps

There are so many iPhone apps to choose from and it can be really tough to know which ones are good and which ones are just a waste of time.  Recently, PC Magazine listed their 40 favorite free apps and I think they’ve compiled a great list.  I have chosen a few that I think are great. AP Mobile 3.1 is excellent because you can stay up-to-date with breaking news, photos and videos from the Associated Press.  You can personalize it so that you only get the content that you want and you can enable push notifications so that you can know about the latest news as it happens.  I have never bought anything from eBay but my husband likes to bid on gold and silver coins but one thing that makes it tough is that, if you leave the house, you can get outbid while you’re away from your computer.  The eBay Mobile 1.4.1 app allows you to keep track of auction and power sellers and frequent bidders will find this tool invaluable. Are you a foodie?  I am so the Epicurious 1.1.0 app is awesome because you can look up your favorite recipes while you’re at the grocery store picking up essentials.  After making a shopping list, you will be able to check things off as you pick them up. The next one is a no-brainer.  So many people keep in touch through Facebook so it’s no surprise that the Facebook 3.03 app made the list.  You can communicate with friends and family, check out new pictures, get information about events and groups and look up phone numbers. Have you ever been out and about somewhere and decided that, instead of going home, you’d rather take in a movie?  Almost everyone has done that but it can be really frustrating to try to figure out what movies are playing at which theaters.  The Fandango 2.0 allows you to find movie times, check out trailers, read reviews and purchase tickets

Carphone Warehouse: buy a Pre, get free flights

Looks like the Pre hasn’t sold too well after all – while its US sales were somewhat ok, their UK launch partner is said to be sitting on piles of unsold handsets. In order to get rid of them, the folks at Carphone Warehouse have taken radical measures. The Guardian now reports the following: Carphone Warehouse is giving away two free airline tickets to anyone who buys a Palm Pre before the end of January as speculation increases that sales of the mobile phone, seen as the closest competitor to Apple’s iPhone have fallen far short of expectations.

China Unicom on Chinese handset platforms

Whether you like it or not: China is a huge market for cell phones. Unfortunately, getting statistics on the market is somewhat difficult – which is why having China Mobile talk on 3G handset sales is especially interesting. Marbridge Daily claims the following distribution: … 8% of procured handsets run Windows Mobile, 16% use the Symbian mobile OS, and 4% use Apple’s iPhone OS, while the rest operate either BREW or the manufacturer’s self-owned OS. … So much for the death of Symbian and the dominance of iPhone / BlackBerry… Image: Wikimedia commons / Edzhgz

AT&T Halts iPhone Sales In NYC Area

Believe it or not, AT&T has stopped selling the iPhone online in the greater NYC Metropolitan are.  Fletcher Cook, an AT&T representative said that the the change is a routine one.  “ We periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels.” I believe that about as much as I believe that the next version of the iPhone will come equipped with a site to site transporter.  The general consensus, one shared by at least a few AT&T sales representatives, is that AT&T’s network is just no longer capable of supporting additional iPhones.  Many would argue, myself included, that AT&Ts network has not been capable of supporting devices in general for quite some time. I am sure that AT&T is doing everything they can to keep the iPhone exclusive on their network, however, I would think that no longer selling them in one of your largest markets is not helping much. I know that a lot of iPhone users read RIMarkable, so, I will toss this question out there?  How many of you would switch to Verizon or Sprint if the iPhone were offered in a CDMA variant? Problems with Searches and Indexing

Searches and indexing in Outlook can present a number of issues for end users. Administrators need to know how to correct problems as they emerge. One of the problems that can occur is if a user performs a search for text that they know exists but the search returns no results. One instance where this can happen is if after upgrading your Windows XP operating system to Windows Vista, you then upgraded your Office suite software to the 2007 version

Keep track of your BlackBerry usage with SmrtMonitor

Ever wonder how much time you spend sending messages on your BlackBerry? How about the amount of time you play Word Mole? A handful of applications will provide you with a rough breakdown, but none I’ve seen are quite as elegant as SmrtMonitor. It’s from the makers of SmrtGuard , a wireless backup and remote tracking service for BIS users. The application tracks how much time you spend on each BlackBerry application and then presents it in a number of formats.

Nokia most popular phone brand amongst university students

Financial Times reports that according to a survey by Mobile Youth consultancy, in a sample size of [only] 1000 : Nokia was the most popular with 30% Sony Ericsson second with 27% RIM is at 2% with their BlackBerry- however growth has apparently been impressive. The article actually isn’t about Nokia but about how students are powering the growth of BlackBerry. Perception on BlackBerry is that now, they’re not just for corporate consumers. With the aide of some great marketing (love BB ads) and celeb association, it’s cool to be seen with a BlackBerry.

15 hardware changes that would have made N900 physically irresistible – [15 essential hardware features for its successor]

The N900 is a great phone, but it is (as Nokia themselves have more or less said) a work in progress. I’ll say it again, it’s step 4 of 5 to Maemo glory. Software evolution to one side ( see firmware update wishlist for N900 ),  understandably, this early adopter product isn’t physically “perfect” for mass market. I.E.

JavaScript speed of mobile browsers

As the web gets more and more interactive (AJAX, anyone?), having a fast JavaScript engine is one of the key elements in delivering a good web experience. On the desktop, browser makers work hard on optimizing their JavaScript engines due to public scrutiny – in mobile, this effect has not taken place so far. Our friends at NS Basic Corp’s have performed a little benchmark of the various browsers, and ended up with the results outlined below – faster means higher score: Anybody of you surprised by any of the results?

BlackBerry Tour2 9650 Already in the Wild?

Found under: BlackBerry , Tour2 , 9650 , , The original BlackBerry Tour was launched earlier this summer by both Sprint and Verizon. Only RIM could say who won the Tour battle as both Sprint and Verizon tried to be the first carrier to sell the phone in the USA and thus gain as many new subscribers as possible. But not everyone was delighted by the Tour so RIM decided to offer them a new version of the phone.
