Just another cellphone emission study: iPhone usage won’t necessarily cause brain tumors?
Cellphone radiation studies aren’t exactly easy to conduct, but there’s some seemingly good news that was published by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute . A study conducted in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden from 1974 to 2003 found no major link between cellphone use and brain tumors. They went so far as to say that “there is no increased risk” of brain tumors due to mobile phone usage, which is certainly a good bit of news. One thought that struck me after reading this was “what kind of phones were these people using?”. Surely the iPhone 3GS with its insanely fast 3G speeds would have a higher SAR (specific absorption rate) than the stuff people were using a few years back
One of the real lesser used features of a mid to top end mobile phone is the GPS capabilities . It is rare that in a buying decision that the availability of GPS is given any consideration, of the additional features a mobile phone can offer, I’d suggest the two most often considered features are email capability and quality of camera. Then there are the media capabilities, generally music then video, followed by suitability for web browsing. GPS tends to rank after all these considerations, if it ranks at all. This could be set to change though, in the light of the recent announcement by Google regarding voice navigation on their Maps product
Update: Verizon Blocked 4INFO’s Shortcode Over Ads Attached To Its SMS Messages
In regards to why Verizon decided to block 4INFO text messages from one of its short codes, it’s come to light that the dispute is over ads being placed in 4INFO’s SMS messages, not per-message fees as we had previously speculated . I had a chance to speak with Zaw Thet, CEO of 4INFO, who stated that Verizon had made requests prior to Friday’s blockage in regards to the advertising attached to 4INFO’s messages via its 44636 short code, and that he believed compliance with their terms had been met. Obviously, Verizon saw it otherwise. “We can’t comment on any part of this dispute other than that we believe that we complied with the Verizon requests, regarding our SMS advertising on 44636, in a timely manner, explained Thet

Today’s Appvent Calendar games – Samurai: Way of the Warrior and Navy Patrol: Coastal Defense
Today’s games are brought to you by the letter F (as in FREE): Samurai: Way of the Warrior (review of v1.0 here ) is a hack-and-slash game with more gore than all four (or is it five?) Saw movies combined. It’s got some pretty punishing timing and and it can get a little repetitive, but you can’t argue with a free game. The graphics and presentation are definitely worth a peek, at the very least. [ iTunes link ] Navy Patrol: Coastal Defense is a tower defense game based around combat at sea.
….well at least in comparison to S60V5. A month ago, Symbian’s CEO gave a rather vague presentation on the new Symbian UI . On Thursday, Engadget posted up a sneak preview of the upcoming Symbian UI which no longer resembles the murky confusion that is S60. With the new Symbian UI users will have: Reduced clutter Improved input methods Capacitive Screen (death to resistive on high end!) Multitouch Pinch and Zoom Single touch improved (less taps to get to places- would be fantastic if we can get to everything with 3 taps or under) Better website compatibility, Quicker flash UI will be faster – 3x faster than our high end (which one, N97 or N900?) Scrolling will be 60FPS vs current 15fps Optimized graphics – more responsive, beautiful Drastically reduce complexity and bring new fresh appeal – when Nokia does, many people will take a new look at Symbian to achieve what no other manufacturer can.

FCC Investigates the $350 ETF for Advanced Verizon Devices?
Found under: Verizon , ETF , FCC , , Just before the Droid was launched Verizon decided to go ahead and raise that Early Termination Fee for advanced devices to 350 in order to make people think twice before ditching that new 2-year contract. Dont expect Verizon to simply get away with that. Although the new ETF has been announced a month ago the FCC will investigate the matter
HD Video: Stunning 3D Gaming on N900 – Bounce Evolution – The Scenic Route
Graphics wise , whatever glitzy eye candy game you can show off on the iPhone, the N900 can do it too. Bounce Evolution was the first 3D game shown on the N900 and everyone was stunned at how good it looked (and it’s on a Nokia!). I loved Bounce on my 7210 – kept me busy for ages – I’d never have thought that it would ever look as good as this
This was not the best week for computers at BBGeeks Studios. On Wednesday evening my laptop took a foot and a half tumble into oblivion. On Thursday morning Coopers computer crashed and erased mostly everything. So we’re dealing with plenty of issues here.
