Chinese Maker: Apple Ripped Off the iPad

The president of a Chinese company has claimed that one of its designs has been ripped by Apple through the iPad. The P88, a Windows Tablet PC made by Shenzhen Loong Brother, was apparently the target of “plagiarism”, and has left president Xiaolong Wu “[no] choice but to report [Apple].” To whom exactly wasn’t clear. The P88 has been on the Chinese market for six months as of this writing, according to Wired . It features a 10.2″ resistive touch screen, which means it’s not multi-touch capable

AV T-Shirt

By Andrew Liszewski While it’s clearly targeted at home theater enthusiasts or anyone who gets excited at seeing a large panel of audio-visual ports, I have a feeling that a lot of geeks might pass on this AV tee designed by Olly Moss for the simple fact that it only has 2 HDMI ports. Only 2?! I mean what year are we living in, 2008? $18 for the tee in all sizes, or $45 for a hoodie, from Threadless . [ AV T-Shirt ] VIA [ Uber-Review ]

Mercury "beating heart" works with gallium, too

So it turns out, happily, that the mercury beating heart demo I wrote about a couple days ago can also be done with molten gallium, which is vastly less toxic than mercury and requires only slightly higher temperatures. The chemists at the University of Nottingham who produce The Periodic Table of Videos made this very informative footage demonstrating the process, which is slightly different from the mercury beating heart demo in that there is no iron nail present.

product of an unholy matrimony: mac osx on a nokia n900

Toni Nikkanen just earned himself a bit of Internet fame. With Apple and Nokia trying to bury each other in lawsuits , Nikkanen must have been aware of the irony when he posted a video on YouTube showing his nerdy (albeit useless) achievement: an N900 running Apple’s OS X 10.3, aka Panther – with the help of a pre-release version of PearPC . On the other hand, I don’t think we can really say that the smartphone was “running” OSX. It was more like crawling: Click to View Embedded Video Clip I was half-expecting to see the phone explode or melt down.

final fantasy xiii xbox 360 version inferior to ps3 version? [rumor]

As we previously mentioned, a Final Fantasy XIII touring bus patrolled around some areas of the United States, allowing people to test both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the upcoming Square Enix RPG. An article at Sankaku Complex says that the publicity stunt generated both good and bad publicity, as some people have allegedly commented that the Xbox 360 version is graphically inferior to the one on the PS3. A “real person” was quoted as saying: “I went to the Sunnyvale one today and got to play the 360 version.

a posture stapler: never thought an office supply could be called sexy

But that’s just what the A Posture stapler is – sexy. (At least if you’re into shoes.) It’s supposed to be energy efficient but I don’t see how or what makes it so, but who cares? The A Posture a weirdly-named stapler shaped like a high-heeled shoe. It sounds like something you’d find over at Deal Extreme but this one is surprisingly nice to look at.

SPHEREtouch Stainless Steel, Titanium & Platinum Mouse Looks Like a Pinball

Looking more like a pinball on a tether, the SPHEREtouch mouse isn’t really designed for retro gaming nostalgia . This highly polished laser mouse ball is a unique sight to behold. Available in satin finished stainless steel, titanium and platinum, they are a little pricey, but definitely make a classy minimalist statement. OreObject’s creation has mouse buttons that are part of the smooth form, complemented by its ceramic base which should make for a nearly frictionless contact with your desk

OS X on Nokia N900

If you thought running Android on a N900 was a nifty hack, you should check out this video of OS X 10.3 running in emulation on the N900. It’s dog-slow, but it does boot and goes to show that you’ll want a better interface when you start using smaller screens. Motorola Devour promo shows Verizon logo

Section: Communications , Cellphones , Cellular Providers , Smartphones , Mobile The long rumored Motorola Devour that has been popping up on blogs randomly for the past year or so has finally shown a step towards hitting shelves. Verizon’s shelves that is. The latest evidence shows the Devour on a promo box that will likely be shipped to Verizon retail stores. GPS Based Pothole Patrol – Now Crowdsourced

Good little article in the Boston Globe today highlighting an iPhone App that allows users to take a picture of potholes, and other items that have fallen into disrepair and shoot the geoencoded picture over to City Hall. It’s called Citizens Connect (iTunes link). The idea is not new, and several cities have done one, as well as CitySourced , another App with some similar features that spans several cities. In Boston, after the image and details of the problem is received, the message is automatically routed to the local maintenance facility for dispatch

BlackBerry OS 6.0 in the works…

One of our most-solid BlackBerry connects has just dropped word that internally, RIM is starting to work on OS 6.0. We can’t reveal details about the OS at this time, but in addition to molding what is OS 6.0, we also know that RIM is working on OS 5.2 which should debut sometime this year. Logical upgrade paths? Definitely. Let’s hope it won’t just be more evolutionary RIM madness, though.

Review: Sprint Overdrive rocks 4G at more than double 3G speeds

At CES 2010 last month Sprint announced their Overdrive device from Sierra Wireless that functioned just like the device I was looking for with 4G and 3G support in a compact package. Sprint sent along an Overdrive for me to test out and after a couple of weeks of using it in the Seattle and Portland areas I am pretty sure I will be putting my MiFi up on the auction block and moving to the Sprint Overdrive instead. Check out my image gallery of the Overdrive with some comparison shots with the Verizon MiFi.

Dallas makers organizing a hackerspace

Members of the Dallas Personal Robotics Group are looking to organize a communal workshop . The DPRG had access to a warehouse in Garland for seven years, from 2002 through 2009 thanks to Mike Dodson, who allowed us to use one of his warehouse buildings and patiently put up with all our geeky shenanigans for almost a decade.

MyNokiaBlog reaches 1 million views, breaks 170,000 views in January and wins a Golden Retrevo Award!

With the title as long as a title could be, first I’d just like to thank you for coming to MyNokiaBlog.com and reading our posts! Today we’ve hit 1 Million views! I’ve also just realised we’ve somehow broken 170,000 views in January 2010! We also won a Golden Retrevo award! I would have been very proud to make each one a separate post, but they’ve all come at once so I’ll group them all into one post! 170,000 views last month! I’ve said it before, but although this view count is probably a drop in the ocean compared to the other blogs about Nokia, for me I’m genuinely impressed considering that 9 months ago, we’d get the same views in a month that MyNokiaBlog now gets in a day. To give another perspective, you guys helped MyNokiaBlog get more views in January 2010, than the combined whole year of 2008 + Sept to December 07

Revealed: Which social networks pose the biggest risk?

One of the nuggets of interesting data inside the newly-published Sophos Security Threat Report 2010 reveals which social network people believe poses the biggest security risk. We polled over 500 firms, and 60% felt that Facebook was the biggest danger: We shouldn’t forget, of course, that Facebook is by far the largest social network – and you’ll find more bad apples in the biggest orchard. The truth is that the security team at Facebook works hard to counter threats on their site – it’s just that policing 350 million users can’t be an easy job for anyone

The conspiracy of running shoes: apparently, running barefoot is better for you

I live near a plaza with lots of restaurants. It’s basically two long strips of coffee shops, boutique stores and restaurants. It’s a lovely strip. The fact that the two rows are parallel makes for a great wind funnel allowing me to sit outside while I listen to my audiobooks and drink coffee. Then the silence is broken.
