Nokia N8 second preview, HP Palm buyout prompts investigation, T-Mo G1 gets Android 2.1 ROM

The first preview of the Nokia N8 that surface did the device no favors. Another preview has now surfaced and the N8 looks much better this time around. HP has purchased Palm and apparently, at least some of Palm’s shareholders are not happy . An investigation is underway after some felt the $1.2 billion buyout shortchanged shareholders.

Chinese "Anti-peep" USB Webcam with Robotic Arms for Complete Privacy

An inherent problem with webcams is that hackers are aggressively finding ways to take control user’s PC through malware to peep into user’s homes. Other than putting tape over the webcam’s lens, Chinese camera specialist Gsou has this nifty USB webcam with a new new “anti-peep” technology. Their interesting approach is having a robotic arm that will automatically cover this camera lens of this one-eyed buddy as soon as a video conferencing session completes. This fella will put down his hands when it detects incoming Skype / MSN video calls. If you still fear the malware might still take control of the webcam’s arms, there’s an override function that allows you to use the unit’s physical button to uncover the lens only when needed

garmin-asus A10

Not to be confused with garminfone or nuviphone M10 Garmin and Asus partnership just announced another Android powered phone called Garmin Asus A10 . Of course its focus is again on GPS navigation; however more so for pedestrians rather than drivers which probably means it’s probably not going to make it to the U.S. where driving almost always takes precedence. The press release actually says it will be available in mid-2010 in Europe and Asia-Pacific.

April has been a strange month for us Brits as election frenzy has taken over, and every TV show you watch has smarmy politicians trying to convince you that they have your best interests at heart. Add to that the late release of the iPad which has Apple fans crying themselves to sleep and the over enthusiastic London Marathon taking place, well, we’re all over the shop really. I could share with you related apps and election chit chat, but I think you’ll prefer an attractive overview of some of the strangest and sexiest gadgets we’ve feasted out eyes on this month

Car guts

My 2-year-old son is obsessed with the movie  Cars . Obsessed, I tell you! While surfing the net for pictures of Lightning McQueen, I stumbled across this little oddity. An illustrator named Jake Parker wondered how the insides of one of Pixar’s cars might work, considering that these vehicles are “strange machine/flesh hybrids,” in Parker’s own words.

Off USB Topic – Have You Seen The Gear Ring?

Once again, I am off topic of USB, but sometimes you get ultra cool products that you must mention.  Today I found a great gadget from our buddies at Gizmos For Geeks .  It’s the Gear Ring. Very elegant in design and intrigues the engineering in all of us.  The Gear Ring is comprised of 6 mini gears which rotate in unison as you twist the top portion. The product is high quality stainless steel and engineer to very tight specifications.  This makes for an easy and smooth feeling as you twist the ring. Although I’m not a ring guy myself, other than my wedding ring, it is intriguing enough that I’m going to buy one.  It’s not THAT much, only $165.  Ring sizes include 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The Costco Prank

Would-be pranksters: get out a pad and pen. You’re going to want to take notes. Rob Cockerham , prankster extraordinaire, recently noticed something that (surprisingly) no one else ever has: the price tags Costco uses on its shelves are just basic text in a common font, on plain white paper. Hence, they’d be remarkably easy for anyone to create
