Hands-on with the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide
In a perfect world, every phone would be like the T-Mobile MyTouch Slide. It’s small, it’s light, it has a keyboard, and it’s easy enough for almost everyone to use even if it’s running one of the most powerful mobile OSes out there. Built by HTC to T-Mobile’s specifications, the MyTouch Slide with full QWERTY keyboard is, in actuallity, one of the best feature phones I’ve seen in a long time. The second in T-Mobile’s MyTouch line, the Slide adds a keyboard and a unique user interface to the mix. Instead of My Faves, the phone allows you to create “cards” for each of your favorite contacts

The Microsoft Courier lives on…in parts
Section: Gadgets / Other We covered the death of the Courier, Microsoft’s shining tablet device that was supposed to take down the iPad. Although the Courier is dead as a device itself, it will live on in parts. Microsoft’s Bill Gates said the following regarding the abrupt halt of the Courier: “Microsoft has a lot of different tablet projects that we’re pursuing, we think that work with the pen that Microsoft pioneered will become a mainstream for students. It can give you a device that you can not only read, but also create documents at the same time.” This device, according to the videos floating around the web, was made for content creators.

gamecube portable perfection
I’ve certainly seen my fair share of Nintendo portable casemods over the years, but I have to say that this Gamecube handheld is one of my new faves. I suppose it’s because this is modder techknott’s second Gamecube portable that it’s so well put together. The portable features a nice backlit LCD screen, along with a perfectly integrated Gamecube controller, and a pair of speakers. Hiding the disc tray underneath the screen is a really cool touch too. More pics in the gallery below… …and be sure to scroll down to see Techknott’s GCp in action: Click to View Embedded Video Clip Now all we need is for someone to build a proper Wii handheld, and our Nintendo portable collection will be complete.

In the world of LCD Full HD monitors, consumers could have seen many changes, both in terms of price, in terms of features, or even in terms of design. Building a (one-stage) Anaerobic Digester
Kenya-based maker Babamzungu designed and built this proof of concept one-stage anaerobic digester to convert waste organic material into useful methane gas. Anarobic digesters work by placing organic material in an oxygen-free environment, where naturally occurring microorganisms digest the matter and turn it into methane and carbon dioxide. The gas can then be burned as a fuel

Dayton Hamvention, May 14-16
Make: Online reader Richard Kline (Dayton, OH) wrote in to remind us of this excellent ham radio convention: I thought I would send a heads-up in case nobody else had about Hamvention 2010, a huge electronics and ham radio convention in Dayton Ohio, which takes place in about two weeks (May 14, 15, and 16th). Hamvention usually has attendance of about 20,000 people and is loads of fun for anyone who is interested in electronics or ham radio… there is an outdoor electronics flea market with thousands of vendors selling all variety of electronic tools and components and a myriad more ham-radio vendors indoors showing off their latest and greatest stuff. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and are good for all three days. Outdoor flea market vendor spaces costs between $70 and $100 depending on location.

Chevrolet celebrates diamond anniversary of Suburban

Because I Wanna Be Fatter: A USB Microwave
This is another conceptual USB-powered microwave . I have no idea if the thing is even feasible because I don’t understand anything about electricity except sticking a butter knife in a power outlet didn’t give me “the most epic boner” like my friend said it would AND I TRIED TWICE. USB Microwave Concept Still Falls Short [ohgizmo]

Opinion: Apple, iPhone 4, and the Case against Gizmodo
I’m a pretty crappy journalist. I do it in my free time, and for the most part, I’m an opinions and hands-on writer. I don’t go monstering around the nation’s capital with a fedora and notepad, and I rarely find myself in a position where I have to probe into anything that matters past an arbitrary release date. I don’t always fact check if I’m not making accusations. But I know a scummy move when I see one.

It’s Alt.Transportation month!
May is here, spring’s in full swing, and folks are in happy circulation. From my home office window, it’s a steady stream of people on leisurely walks, kids and adults on bikes, kids on skates n’ skateboards, and the old guy down the street who proudly rides his Segway to the 7-Eleven. With gas prices and the economy being what they are, growing concern over environmental impacts, and a greater public harangue over obesity and health issues, I’ve definitely seen an increase in neighborhood biking in the past few years. And for all these reasons — not to mention the tinker-building-hacks potential of these diverse conveyances — it’s a trend we welcome here at MAKE. To celebrate spring, and all of the human-powered and other-powered vehicles, we decided to make May “Alt.Transportation” month

iPhone 3.1.3 unteathered jailbreak
A method to Jailbreak the new 3.1.3 iPhone rom is here and it does away with tethering. Tethering is the problem that arose from the blackra1n exploit requiring a computer to reboot the iPhone. Although we saw a hardware workaround for that, it’s much nicer to do away with the issue completely. The new exploit is called Spirit and we found the site was getting hammered earlier so you should check out the writeup over at Redmond Pie if you can’t get through with the link at the top. My favorite laser-cutter offering 3D printer parts kit deal
I’ve been hiring Angus Hines of Carrolton, VA, for a couple of months now for all my contract laser-cutting, and I can’t say enough good things about him. But, heck, I’ve never met him, so let’s focus on the empirical: Angus consistently quotes me about half what the big-laser cutters want to charge on the same jobs. (Hopefully he knows that, and I haven’t just shot myself in the foot by pointing it out.) Seriously, Angus himself says, “one of my goals is to help bring the price of DIY tech down to a more reasonable level.” Now Angus is offering a kit of all the acrylic parts for the open-source Fab@Home Model 2 3D printer at about 75% of what the Fab@Home preferred vendors are charging.
