T-Mobile announces HTC HD7

Just as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was taking the stage in New York City, T-Mobile sent out a press blast to let us know that they too will be releasing a Windows Phone 7 device — the HTC HD 7 — in “mid-November.” The HD7 will have a 4.3-inch screen complete with 1GHz processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 5 megapixel autofocus camera, and either 8GB or 16GB or internal storage. There is also mention of a Netflix app that sounds promising. The end of the press release also reads: “In addition to the HTC HD7, T-Mobile plans to offer an additional Windows Phone 7 smartphone option in the Dell Venue Pro, a stylish full-QWERTY slider featuring a 4.1-inch screen, 5 megapixel camera and a Qualcomm 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. The Dell Venue Pro is expected to be available in the U.S. in time for the holidays directly from Dell and select retailers with service from T-Mobile.” Hit the jump for the full release.

HTC 7 Surround first hands-on! (update: video)

We just got a quick look at the HTC 7 Surround for AT&T, running that brand-spanking-new Windows Phone 7 OS you’ve been hearing so much about. The phone has a kickstand to help it show off its standout feature: a slide-out “Dolby Surround Sound” speaker. Stand by for more impressions and video, but for now check out the gallery below. Update: Video is live! Here are some thoughts: We were impeded by the security device holding the phone down, but from what we could tell the Surround is a quality device — we’d expect no less from HTC. It is built of plastic, but it pulls off that certain premium look and feel

The Era Of the Uber-Smartphone Is Here

One thing you’ll notice about this crop of Windows Phone 7 handsets is the power of the processor. Each one – almost ten in all – run 1GHz+ Snapdragon processors. With the average desktop or laptop processor running at about 2GHz (let’s say single core speed here), we’re talking about phones that have the power of a half-decade old PC.

Microsoft Launches Windows Phone 7 But Does Anyone Care?

It’s been a long time coming and it’s finally here: Microsoft has released their eagerly awaited Windows Phone 7, a distinct break from everything that came before and a complete overhaul of Microsoft’s aged OS. Windows Phone 7 uses an entirely new UI based around “hubs,” points of activity on the screen. Some hubs bring up email, others bring up photos and games

Camera Duo for iPhone – Simultaneously Capture Photos and Video

With three young kids I find myself in this situation all the time – video or still?  When using my iPhone as my camera when out I almost always opt for still pictures.  But there are often times when I wish I could capture what’s going on over video in addition to stills

Creepy HDD activity lights just in time for Halloween

We almost skimmed right past this spooky HDD activity light thinking it was just another set of LEDs wired to the motherboard.  However, they explained right off that they didn’t want just another blinking light on their case. They wanted it to change its intensity smoothly based on hard drive activity. While there are a million ways this could have been over engineered, we think they did a pretty good job of simplifying the circuit. The bill of materials is pretty much just a handful of resistors, LEDs, an opto isolator, and a capacitor.

Reminders! iPhone App Review

Hello, my name is Andy, and I’m a to-do appoholic. Hello, Andy. It’s a problem.  I have purchased at least eight to-do apps from the App Store, and I own licenses for three more on my Mac.  Sometimes I think I spend more time trying out new to-do apps than I spend actually doing the things on my to-do lists.  The worst part is that often all I want to do is make a quick reminder for myself to do something, and suddenly I find myself sucked into a task management quagmire, creating projects and assigning due dates, when all I really wanted was to remind myself to call my mom tomorrow. But I think I might have found the solution to my woes in a little app called REMINDERS! … [ visit site to read more ] Filed in categories: iPhone, iPad, iPod related Tagged: iPhone App , productivity Reminders! iPhone App Review originally appeared on The Gadgeteer on October 11, 2010 at 10:00 am.

Co-Motion Ristretto Bike

Handmade in Eugene, Oregon, Co-Motion Cycles has literally built a reputation for rigid, light cycles since 1988. Their bikes are lean, mean, cycling machines and Co-Motion’s standing invite to their production facilities shows their dedication to transparent production – something we love to see. The Ristretto ($5,755) illustrates Co-Motion achievements and capabilities with its obsessively detailed (and clean) design.

Wooden library, Italian-style

A commenter on last Friday’s post about wood samples shaped like books pointed me to this considerably classier and older version of the same idea . As he put it, “these books are about the trees and not just the wood.” The collection, housed at the University of Padua’s Center for the Study of the Alpine Environment , was manufactured in the 19th century or before. Each specimen consists of a 7.5x5x1.5-inch book-shaped box, executed in the wood of the subject tree, which opens to display samples of that tree’s seedling, leaves, flowers, seeds, fine roots, sawdust, charcoal, and ash. The spines are bound with samples of the tree’s bark, and of course everything is labeled.

Dell enters the Windows Phone 7 game with the Venue Pro for T-Mobile

You know, I’m not 100% sure T-Mobile/Dell actually meant to announce the Venue Pro right now, given that the only hint of it I’m finding right now is a passing mention at the tail-end of the HD7 announcement — but either way, the details on what looks to be T-Mobile’s second Windows Phone 7 handset are out. There’s no official picture floating around right this second, but, given the specs, I’m damn near positive that this is the Dell “Lightning” that leaked out months ago. Check behind the jump for the specs, along with the previously leaked shot. Confirmed Specs: OS: Windows Phone 7 CPU: 1Ghz Snapdragon 4.1″ WVGA Display Slide-out QWERTY keyboard 5 megapixel autofocus camera Rumored (but pretty likely) bonus specs: 1400 mah battery FM Radio 802.11b/g/n WiFi Bluetooth 2.1 [Leaked shot of the lightning via Engadget ]

Oogoo, a home-made Sugru substitute

If you follow Instructables.com, it might seem like every third article lately is about Sugru, the nifty air-drying silicone putty that’s good for all manner of repairs and custom parts. It’s fantastic stuff (and we love their slogan, “Hack things better”), but one can’t (yet!) just drop in on any local hardware store to buy a quick fix…so [mikey77] has cooked up a recipe for a basic Sugru work-alike . His “Oogoo” (a name likely inspired by oobleck ) is a simple mix of corn starch and silicone caulk. A two-ingredient recipe would hardly seem adequate material for an article, but [mikey77]’s left no stone unturned, providing an extensive tutorial not only on mixing the compound, but how to add colors, cast and carve custom shapes, and how his home-made recipe compares to the name brand product . As a bonus, the article then drifts into a little Halloween project where he demonstrates etching conductive cloth, how to make conductive glue , and other hands-on shenanigans.
