3UK In Car MiFi

3UK have launched the in car MiFi unit in Birmingham at the #GadgetShowLive event. I have previously reviewed the 3UK MiFi and can vouch for it to be a very good device. It’s very easy to setup, the 3UK 3G connection was quick and stable and the overall I only have positives from my experience. The 3UK in car MiFi is designed so passengers can have access to a fast 3G signal via any WiFi enabled device whether that is their iPod Touch, Netbook, or iPad – all without a single wire needed. Boring journeys will be no more, nor will there be the usual kids screaming and shouting “Are We There Yet” because they’d obviously be too busy

The iPad changes the game.

On Saturday, Apple released it’s new device, the iPad. I didn’t pre-order one, but I thought I would stop by our local Best Buy to see if I could snag one. If the line was too long I would just go home. Well, as I arrived at the building a mere 15 minutes before opening, I was ninth in line. I saw footage on TV later in the day that showed hundreds of people in lines at various locations around the states and Chicago in particular

If you thought that they were going to be available just as an afterthought, you were wrong – they are now going to find their way into the product line as distinct items (SKU’s) offering a bit of a dizzying array of products for purchase. The good thing is that decoding the TomTom Traffic and Map Shuffle is pretty straight forward. Top Selling GPS Units

A quick look has Garmin dominating the top selling car navigation units over at Amazon, with older widescreens offering up a long list of features with high quality capabilities. I would recommend the Nuvi 255W out of these as a good value for the money with solid features and a newer interface. The Nuvi 260W offers similar features with a slightly older interface. I think the changes that were made going up to the XX5 series (i.e. the 255W) are worth the extra $27.

IDAPT Universal Desktop Charger

So, it probably goes without saying that everyone here at Popgadget can safely be classified as a geek (though I think there may be a nerd or two among us, but a deliberation on the differences between the two is for another time). Anyway, as geeks go, there is a tendency to have significant charging needs to keep all of our gadgets up and ………

GPS Inventor R. Easton Inducted into Inventor Hall of Fame

Sure, we’re pretty happy that the GPS is a household item these days, but it wouldn’t be that was if Roger Easton didn’t come up with the idea at the Navy Research Labs. Originally dubbed TIMAITON for Time Navigation, the invention that we now call the GPS, used precise atomic clocks on satellites to help devices on the earth triangulate to their location. The original GPS would fill a room, and now the chips are omnipresent on mobile phones

Urbanears Plattan Headphones

Though I’m normally partial to in-ear headphones, I decided to give the Urbanears Plattan headphones a whirl and was very impressed. I admit to being a sound snob. I usually go toting around in $600 professional headphone gear, so I was skeptical about anything with a $60 price tag. I’m pleased to report, however, that these stylish, full-sized headphones delivered great sound that was music [pun intended] to these audiophile ears. I plugged into my iPhone and cranked some thumping dance tunes

Pilots on Russian Plane Used Handheld GPS Before Crash

Reportedly, the pilots of the Russian plane that crashed earlier this week were using a handheld GPS as they approached the airport, and not the onboard GPS system. It is not known why they turned off the system, as they were making their approach in fog and cloud conditions. The plane was en route from Egypt to Moscow’s Domodedovo airport. More at SpaceDaily

TomTom Ease Review

The TomTom Ease is the newest TomTom on the entry level end of the market, and I reviewed the unit here at GPSLodge last month. PCMag has posted their review on the TomTom Ease and they offer some insight into what they think of the Ease, pointing out the Text to Speech capability and the fact that it comes with the benefits of being a TomTom – IQ Routes, MapShare and a solid mapping database under the hood. They did have some issues with routing while driving down the Mass Pike, and some of the shortcuts TomTom took to get to the simple design and low price
