Cameraphone spectrometer for high school chem labs

” In High School Chem Labs, Every Cameraphone Can Be a Spectrometer ” on Wired.com. [via adafruit ] University of Illinois chemistry professor Alexander Scheeline has developed software that turns a camera phone, an LED, and a few other cheap tools into a spectrometer. Armed with these, he thinks we can bring high-end analytic tools to high school chemistry labs all over the world.

Apple Not Planning LTE iPhone for 2011

All of the news about Verizon and the iPhone, and how about it’s inevitably launching on the largest wireless carrier in the United States has been generally positive over the last few months. Whether the device was launching for Verizon’s current CDMA network, or would find its way onto the LTE network, people were eagerly

250,000 LEGO Bricks = Biggest Fan Build Ever

Two hundred and fifty thousand bricks. Two hundred and fifty thousand . That’s how many LEGO pieces were used to create this behemoth that might just be the largest LEGO MOC (“my own creation” aka, fan-made model) ever built. The cost alone is mind-boggling to think about, but also consider that it took nine months to build.

Hands On with the HTC Mozart, Surround, Trophy, HD7

We just got back from a bit of hands-on time with HTC’s brand new Windows Phone 7 powered quartet: the Mozart, the Trophy, the Surround, and the HD7. Mozart & Trophy: I’m gonna go ahead and lump these two together, because, well, they’re reaaally similar. At 3.8″, the Trophy’s display is a hair bigger than the 3.7″ screen on the Mozart, but the Mozart’s 8 megapixel camera tops the 5 megapixel shooter on the trophy. Mozart’s got a metal back, while the Trophy’s is plastic — but really, close your eyes, mix up the handsets, and you won’t be able to tell the difference. HTC’s been cranking out candybar touchscreen handsets like these for some time now, and their pace has only picked up with the Android lines

Get your checkbooks ready: Virgin Galactic made its first successful attempt at a manned free flight over the weekend, paving the way for commercial space flights in the future. In a test run performed on Sunday, the SpaceShipTwo was successfully released from its “mothership” at 45,000 feet, and afterward, glided safely back to Earth.

Gear Games News: Lord of the Rings Online Doubles User Base, Revenue With ‘Free to Play’ Model

I have written about Lord of the Rings Online when it was announced that it would be free-to-play, when it actually launched , and included it in a review round-up as well. It is an excellent MMORPG … and apparently it has done extremely well in the transition from subscription to free-to-play. Turbine, the developer, noted at GDC Online that the game has doubled both the subscriber base and revenue since the game became free to play. The game’s Executive Producer, Kate Paiz, noted that the revenue had doubled in spite of removing the subscription fee. But there is even more good news for Turbine: 20% of LotRO’s former players have returned to the game since the switchover, and that the game has seen a 300% increase in peak concurrency, with three times the number of players online simultaneously, and a 400% increase in active players total

France’s SFR jumps gun, announces Palm Pre 2: 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, webOS 2.0

It’s unclear if the tiny, little shot posted on French carrier SFR’s Club SFR pour Palm blog is in fact the rumored upcoming Pre 2 or just an old Pre shot, but let’s put it this way: considering that we can’t readily tell the difference, it better be an old one. At any rate, the sparse details in the blog post line up with everything we’re expecting so far, namely that the new model will use a 1GHz processor — presumably a TI OMAP3630 — and will sport a full half gig of RAM on board. Between those two spec bumps, we’d fully expect the refreshed webOS 2.0 to scream… but we won’t really know for sure until Palm gives us something to work with. In the meantime, SFR, thanks for the teaser.

Virgin Galactic’s VSS Enterprise completes first solo glide flight

It completed its first flight with a crew on board back in July , and Virgin Galactic’s VSS Enterprise (a.k.a. SpaceShipTwo ) has now crossed what’s unquestionably its biggest hurdle to date: the first solo glide flight. That happened early Sunday morning at the Mojave Air and Spaceport in California, where the VSS Enterprise took off attached to the mothership and then separated at an altitude of 45,000 feet, after which it was freely piloted by Pete Siebold and co-pilot Mike Alsbury for a full eleven minutes before safely landing on the runway (another first for the spaceship). Oh yeah, there’s a video — head on past the break to check it out (along with the official press release). HTC 7 Pro Hands On [Video]

HTC’s additions to the Windows Phone 7 market have been strong ones, and that’s no different for the single CDMA-based device that was floating around the Microsoft event today. While we already know that there’s not going to be a CDMA Windows Phone 7 device launched in the year 2010, that didn’t stop HTC from

Palm Pre 2 Shows up on French Carrier SFR’s Website, Reveals 1GHz Processor

The questions swirling around the upcoming unveiling of the Palm Pre 2, or Mansion (or something else entirely) haven’t been about whether or not the device exists, but what the features would be. What would be the defining characteristic of the next webOS-based device, that would make the customers fall in line for its release?

NES controller gets a rumble pak

Add some feedback to an original NES controller by making it vibrate. This feature is often known as Rumble Pak , a controller add-on for the Nintendo 64 which vibrated as a game feature. This version adds a small DC motor (in the upper right) with a screw soldered off-center to the motor shaft. [Andy Goetz] and his friend built this as a robot controller, taking advantage of the latch and clock pins. Normally, nothing happens while both pins are held high, a signal that they easily patched into using an AND gate

Samsung Focus Hands On [Video]

Samsung’s entrance into the Windows Phone 7 market is a strong one, certainly. Their handsets are the only ones to feature the Super AMOLED display, and that alone may give them a leg up for potential customers. Especially those who enjoy media on their phone. The Samsung Focus, which will be launching on AT&T November

Yet Another Reason To Switch to eBooks: Airline Fees!

We told you a few weeks ago about Scottevest’s ad rejection by Delta . Of course, Delta is far from the only airline with restrictive baggage fees. It seems like every company has extra charges for heavier bags, less room for carry-ons, etc. So what do you do if you’re a voracious reader? John Naughton of the Guardian UK stumbled on this particular issue

Windows Phone 7: Would It Have Made More Sense To Develop One Great Phone Rather Than A Bunch Of OK Ones?

A few minutes ago I was asked to write something about the different models of Windows Phone 7 that are out there. Then I’m like, there’s no way I’m writing about 10+ phones sight unseen, so I decided to limit the piece to the phones that will be available at launch right here in the U.S. Turns out there are five such phones, according to Microsoft. Only two carriers will have Windows Phone 7, um, phones at launch: AT&T and T-Mobile. On AT&T you’ve got the HTC Surround, the Samsung Focus, and the LG Quantum

Windows Phone 7 Launch Guide: The Devices

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled a plethora of new Windows Phone 7 devices this morning at a press conference in NYC. Steve took the stage to detail the sleek WP7 operating system and outline the upcoming phones, which will be available in 30 countries through 60 wireless providers. Microsoft has its hands full with the sheer volume of phones it’s set to release this year, but Steve Ballmer says he likes them so much that he’ll be using them all

Wallee iPad Wall Mount

One of the main crutches of all science fiction worlds is the ubiquitous wall-mounted screen. Ranging from the playful ones in the Jetsons, to the utilitarian ones in Star Wars, to the creepy 1984 model, it seems that interactive wall displays are the direction our society is going. Thanks to Steve Jobs though, owning a powerful touch-enabled screen is science fiction no longer. Getting it integrated into the wall however is where the Wallee can lend a hand

Mini coilgun

UK maker Nick Thatcher’s pistol-sized coilgun is a mere 15cm (5.9″) long and uses 5 caps taken from disposable cameras. I think the brass bars are just to make it look like a raygun. On my last coilgun the charging unit was built in, this resulted in a rather hefty box slung underneath the main gun, on this mini coilgun however in order to save space and improve looks I decided that this wasn’t necessary. instead when the gun needs to be charged the gun can be plugged into the holster (under construction) which will charge it up and then be removed when ready to fire. Alternately a charging cable can be continuously attached to the gun, perhaps with the help of a backpack this may even facilitate rapid fire
