Creation Of A Jedi Masterpiece [Time Lapse Painting]

Robert Burden has not only painted an amazingly awesome 10-foot tall painting of Luke and his Tauntaun from Star Wars , he’s made a time-lapse video of his creation to show the entire delicate process he used to create the geeky artwork (in the styling of an old tapestry). To gain a full appreciation for his work you really need to watch the video: If you’re digging Burden’s work, he also has others inspired by toys from his childhood, including Krang, Voltron, Captain America and even Battle Cat in and out of armor. Take a look at the gallery below for more of Robert Burden’s works: [via io9 ]

Verizon’s LTE SIM Cards Show Off for the Camera

While Sprint may be rocking 4G right now, and T-Mobile’s talking about their super-fast speeds, there’s still quite a few (and that’s an understatement) folks out there eagerly anticipating the moment they can access Verizon’s 4G network. Better known as LTE (Long Term Evolution), the largest wireless carrier in the United States is all set to launch the service by the end of 2010, with more handsets ready to take part in the faster-data speeds by early 2011.

VuPoint Magic Wand Scanner Review

I have an e-book reader I’m finding that I want to put everything that I have that is on paper into the device: books, magazine articles, users/owners manuals, cheat-sheets, blah, blah and blah.  But after spending several hours scanning an out-of-print book that was falling apart using my standard Epson desktop scanner a few weeks ago, my enthusiasm faded.  It just took too long per scanned page and I had to sit in front of or very near my desk for several hours.  Plus, it required booting up my PC, logging on, waiting for boot up, firing up the scanner software, yada, yada and yada.  And yes, I DO happen to be the laziest person on the planet. … [ visit site to read more ] Filed in categories: Desktop Computer Gear , Reviews , eBook Readers and Gear Tagged: Scanner VuPoint Magic Wand Scanner Review originally appeared on The Gadgeteer on July 19, 2010 at 12:19 pm.

Tron socks

Really great Tron socks! Chris Wass designed a chart to use in the knitting pattern , too. Originally designed to be a gift for my big brother, whose TRON fandom and enthusiasm over the release of a second movie inspired the sock design. The pattern is written for toe-up socks, with instructions for the Turkish cast-on and two-at-a-time magic loop after the chart pages. Working the foot of the sock is quick, solid knit work with a few contrast stripes. The excitement comes in with the fair-isle stranded color work around the ankle

130-pound hollowed out tree trunk ipod speaker: neat but heavy

I don’t really know why you would use a 130-pound log as an iPod speaker, but I guess the contrast that this creates between the high-tech looks of the iPod and the rough and rugged looks of the log are kind of cool. Naturally, it’s called the iTree, and was created by the Austrian design studio KMKG . They hollowed out the middle of the log, turning the inside of it into an acoustic chamber to help improve frequency response. Customers can choose what kind of wood they want and the length they desire

Geek Up Your Party With a Live-Updating Slideshow

If there’s anything that I love as much as getting my hands on a shiny new gadget, it’s taking old gadgets and repurposing them to accomplish something completely awesome.  I recently combined a low-end Eye-Fi card, a 2008 Mac Mini, and a little elbow grease to turn my home theater system into a slideshow displaying photos of a party at my home — live, as I was taking them .  Here’s how I did it, and how you can too. … [ visit site to read more ] Filed in categories: Articles , Digital Cameras and Gear , Do-It-Yourself Tagged: DIY , HTPC , Photos Geek Up Your Party With a Live-Updating Slideshow originally appeared on The Gadgeteer on July 19, 2010 at 10:00 am.

Nokia Siemens buys Motorola’s switching business for $1.2 billion

Motorola’s slow decline was halted, briefly, by the launch of the Droid line of phones. Now, however, it looks like the company’s money-making switching subsidiary is no longer going to be making money as it’s just been sold to Nokia Siemens for $1.2 billion. While the company still owns its own handset and set-top box operation, the switching side was Motorola’s bread and butter and now it may be going hungry. With the unit, Nokia Siemens gets 50 large customers like China Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon. Motorola will still own the iDEN “push-to-talk” system but has sold off their manufacturing systems for GSM, WiMax, and LTE switches.

nes wooden sculpture: video game console as art

We’ve featured Nintendo systems with wooden components before, but this NES is entirely made out of wood, with the exception of the strings used for the cables: It seems that the console – along with a wooden TV – was made for an exhibit. The sculpture is said to be so well made, “it appears to be a functional Nintendo at first glance.” I’m inclined to disagree since, well, it looks like a wooden sculpture at first glance

Proporta takes advantage of your pain

Proporta, case makers to the stars, is offering 20% off some of its iPhone 4 cases if you return your free bumper case to them. Why would you do this? I’m not quite sure. Proporta founder Guy Monson writes: As a mobile device accessories company with over 3,000 cases, power solutions and screen protectors, we realise that a free case is a free case and that a lot of customers will still want fully surrounded protection. So we’d like to offer customers 20% off any Proporta Case or Screen Protector for the iPhone 4, if they return their bumper case to us, with the promotion code CASEFREE at www.proporta.com We generally like Proporta, but this move is baffling

Pre-Review Preview: Windows Phone 7

To make a short story shorter: for the last three days, I’ve been one of but a handful of people carrying around a handset running Microsoft’s unreleased Windows Phone 7 operating system. This specific handset isn’t one that’s ever intended for release, and, while it’s looking pretty close to done, the build running on the handset is by no means finalized. With these bits in mind along with my new personal policy of not reviewing big-ticket items until I’ve really lived with them (even if that means not being first out of the gate with a review; for logic, see here ), I present our pre -review of Windows Phone 7 in its nascent state
