Powering a switch via PoE

[Kajer] was doing some work with IP phones that use Power over Ethernet. While trying to get this to work with a network switch he decided to use PoE to power the switch itself . The best thing about this is he managed to shoehorn all of the necessary bits into the stock case. Those bits include a bridge rectifier, transistor, resistor, and a 5v power supply.

McGraw-Hill accidentally (on purpose?) leaks Apple Tablet on CNBC

It wasn’t what McGraw-Hill CEO, Terry McGraw, said; rather it is that he said it at all. When asked by CNBC’s Erin Burnett about the Apple Tablet, McGraw had this to say: “They’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one… And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now is we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format…The tablet is going to be just really terrific.” This is either a planned PR stunt by McGraw-Hill/Apple or an enormous flub by MG’s CEO.

Okay, we all know by now that Apple is going to be announcing their tablet at tomorrow’s January 27th Apple event , but the CEO of McGraw-Hill, Terry McGraw, just kinda spilled the beans on CNBC: “Yeah, Very exciting. Yes, they’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable

Review: Teavana Perfect Teamaker

Being the gadget freak that I am, I like to have gadgets in the kitchen almost as much as I do in the office or on the go.  I am a big fan of drinking tea (both hot and cold), but often I only want one mug of tea at a time, not a whole pot.  I was looking around at tea flavors I wanted to try when I happened upon the Perfect Teamaker from Teavana .  It seemed like the perfect solution, so I promptly added it to my Christmas list. … [ visit site to read more ] Related posts: Primo Water Dispenser a Kitchen Essential Aerobie Aeropress Coffee & Espresso Maker Review Shower Light + Hot Showers: The “you smell good” Review Tags: About MY Gear , Health Tech , Home Tech , Offbeat , Reviews Related posts Wii Thrustmaster Motion Plus Elite Fitness Pack – Review (8) Four Years Later Will I Finally Get My Ideal UMPC? Geneva wheels on Thingiverse

Apparently I’m not the only one charmed by the simple elegance of the Geneva wheel movement ( Wikipedia ). Thingiverse users PrintTo3D and raumfahrtagentur have created printable and laser-cut-able versions, respectively, of the classic mechanism, which converts continuous rotary into intermittent rotary motion, with positive locking of the stationary shaft between cycles. PrintTo3D has also posted a YouTube video showing the final printing, assembly, and action of his model. Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in 3D printing | Digg this!

Wii Thrustmaster Motion Plus Elite Fitness Pack – Review

Almost a year ago I was sent a Nintendo Wii as a birthday present by a good friend. About a month later my then six-year-old niece and nephew heard about it and were excited to send me, via their mom, my sister, a Nintendo Wiifit pack. Some time ago I was sent the “Wii Thrustmaster Motion Plus Elite Fitness Pack”. It contained a number of accessories to work with the Wii fit system. Here is the confession — I played with the Wii for a few weeks and then didn’t touch it again for quite some time

Speed Boost in Video Through RapidDrive Tech

We must know about SSD (solid state drive) and HDD (hard disk drive). SDD itself is used for storing persistent data through solid state memory. HDD itself is unchanged storage device that stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters. There is a gap between SDD and HDD, and how to bring them together

Will The Apple Tablet Kill the Nook?

Techcrunch posted today on a fascinating rumor/theory about the Apple Tablet. They claim that Barnes and Noble may have struck a deal to be the “official” bookstore for the Tablet ecosystem. This, of course, contradicts reports of Apple dealing directly with publishers, as well as the Macrumors report that Apple did not want middlemen involved in their ebookstore

Why aren’t we building our own printers?

We’ll ask it again, why aren’t we building our own printers? We’re building 3d printers , CNC mills , and hacking the ink cartridges on commercial printers. What does it really take to build say a 300 dpi black and white printer? Something that lets you clean and service the print head rather than throwing it out when the ink reservoir is empty?

Four Years Later Will I Finally Get My Ideal UMPC?

Oh, who am I kidding. I’m downright giddy about Apple’s announcement tomorrow. Yes, it’s possible that we’ll just see a new iPhone operating system or an upgrade to the Apple TV but with all of the buzz this time around that would be rather surprising

That’s Oldschool!: LG’s New Retro Television

LG’s Serie 1 Retro Classic TV doesn’t just look like an old CRT television, it is an old CRT television . Except they’re new . Old technology, new product. It’s confusing, I know! The set features a 14-inch diagonal screen, complete with rabbit-ear antennae and chrome legs. It even has old-school knobs for changing channels and adjusting volume.

Repair or improve your NES

There’s a warm place in our hearts for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s too bad we don’t have that hardware sitting around anymore. But if you do there’s a chance it needs some TLC and there’s always room for a blue LED mod. [Raph] has a wonderful collection of NES hardware repairs and hacks that you should take a look at. These include replacing the power supply, fixing the cartridge connector, monkeying with the CIC chip , adding a reset button on the controller, converting the audio from mono to stereo, and yes, swapping in a blue LED

Looks like the larger of the two just had a fairly significant meal as well. Just sayin’, give it a couple hours and she’ll only be a 246 pounder.
