Review: Giant Garbage Pail Kids Wall Graphics
If you were wondering how one of those Garbage Pail Kids graphics we are giving away would actually look on your wall or laptop, I have put together a gallery that might help clear things up. More specifically, I peeled and stuck the 4-foot Atom Bomb graphic in increasingly random and inappropriate spots in my home, and, in some cases, juxtaposed it with what is traditionally considered to be “fine art.” In the end, you just might find that art featuring humorously-named, comically mutated children is just as valid. Conclusion: I haven’t kept up with Garbage Pail Kids in recent years, but if you are a fan of the classics (and who isn’t), you will undoubtedly be pleased with the quality of the prints from LTL . I’m pretty confident you could stick and re-stick the image on your wall somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 times as LTL suggests, but I wouldn’t go slapping these things up all willy-nilly. If the graphic sticks to itself, you are going to have a hell of a time pulling it apart again.

T-Mobile launches early upgrade program for post-paid smartphone customers
If you’re like us, keeping a smart phone for two years really isn’t an option. After about 6 months of ownership the honeymoon is over; after 9 months you begin to obsess over a few battle scars your phone has acquired, and by month 12 you are actively seeking your phone’s demise so you have an excuse to buy the latest and greatest. Starting immediately, T-Mobile will be offering post-paid smartphone customers on a two year contract — or feature phone owners looking to upgrade to a smartphone — two tiers of upgrade pricing… as long as you are willing to renew your two year deal. The move is aimed at curbing the number of customers jumping from T-Mobile to other networks, specifically AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Customers will be eligible for a “tier 1″ discount if they have had their phone for 1-11 months, are currently in a two year contract, and have an individual voice plan that is $29.99 or higher — $49.99 or higher for family plans — and are upgrading to, or buying a new smartphone.

Around two decades after introducing of the first tablet PC, in particular with the personal computer handled with a stylus, Apple announced yesterday during their usual Keynote event a new Multi Touch device, the famous iPad or “iTampon”… We won’t introduce you the all-new iPad since most of you guys are aware with this new “Tablet” Device… I Think most of you were waiting for Steve Jobs announcement… But, we propose you a brief sum up of what the web thinks about this new beast. Short Circuit Shelf
By Andrew Liszewski The name ‘Short Circuit Shelf’ conjured up images of my handful of DVDs and books being held up by a wise-cracking, sentient robot, but this is cool too. Created by Alexandra DiCairano , the Short Circuit Shelf is actually designed to look like a circuit board when mounted on your wall, which, according to Alexandra, “have a beautiful and efficient pattern that perfectly serve their function…” The shelves aren’t available for sale though, which is a shame since they’d probably be more popular in comp sci and electrical engineering students’ dorm rooms than that picture of Einstein sticking his tongue out

Apple’s iPad keyboard dock, case and other accessories get the hands-on treatment
Apple didn’t give us a great amount of time with its newly unveiled iPad today, and as you’ve likely seen, we spent the bulk of our allotment touching the unit itself . Lost in the proverbial shuffle were a number of the unit’s launch accessories , including the admittedly intriguing keyboard dock ($69), case ($39), iPad Dock Connector to VGA adapter ($29) and camera connection kit ($29). Each of these doodads seem to look and feel exactly as you’d expect ‘em to, though we’re still baffled by Apple’s decision to make you pay extra for access to the world’s most widely accepted connector.

Pink Pixeled Glock Shoots Real Bullets, Not Pixels
This DuraCoat Glock Gun Lady Swat Digital is a dangerous example of products that should remain in its natural state and don’t necessarily need a new paint job like those gadgets that get the Colorware treatment do. Jim’s Gun Supply is no stranger to controversy, and yet they still continue to pump out designs on guns that in the end, make them look like toys instead of dangerous weapons. Obviously with this design they are reaching out to not only women but geeks as well. Of course no one is forcing anyone to send in their guns to them to get a face-lift, but just the fact that it’s an option seems wrong; especially since it has the potential to get into the wrong hands, and by the wrong hands, we mean kids might accidentally think this is a toy. This is one item pixels don’t belong on… and don’t you love the Breast Cancer ribbon on it too?

Open MAKE Night at the Exploratorium, this Saturday
Michelle Hlubinka, MAKE’s Education Director, sent us this announcement about the upcoming Open MAKE Night at the SF Exploratorium : As part of our ongoing quest to encourage more young people to exercise their innate curiosity and creativity by making things, this Saturday, January 30th, we’re kicking off a four-month collaboration with the Exploratorium’s Learning Studio , TechShop , and Disney-Pixar . Our calendar of upcoming themes and makers at the Exploratorium: January 30th: Bristlebots & Blinkybugs — Ken Murphy and Windell Oskay & Lenore Edman February 27th: Wearables & Soft Circuitry — Adrian Freed March 27th: Make Your Own Kind of Music — Walter Kitundu and Krys Bobrowski April 24th: Motors & Mechanisms — Brad Prether and Ernie Fosselius Each Saturday we meet follows a simple schedule: 11:00 Dale Dougherty interviews makers in the McBean Theatre 12:30 Featured makers and hands-on making on the museum floor 3:00 Events end It’s a first experiment in a new program we call Young Makers, in which we intend to create an infrastructure to nurture kids who want to learn by making, beyond what they can do with construction kits. We hope to fulfill a dire need: satisfying a little bit of what shop classes used to do before they, lamentably, started getting booted out of schools. The idea behind Young Makers is to create a community, both on-line and physical, that brings together like-minded kids, adult mentors, and fabrication facilities — those who love to build and to learn by making. The role of the mentors is to help young people find a project vision if they don’t already have one, and then to help them realize that vision.

Make your own shoes or maybe even go barefoot?
There’s a (r)evolution in the world of running it seems , many runners are tossing their expensive cushiony running shoes and opting for barefoot’ing it, running in sandals, flats and some are just making their own shoes (our favorite!). We’ve covered many DIY shoe making projects and it’s interesting to see this new trend shoe-less trend backed with some pretty serious research. The latest issue of Nature just dropped in my mailbox , I think the full article will be online at some point, but here are some excerpts, sites and more..

Editorial: Engadget on the Apple iPad
As you can probably imagine, Engadget HQ has been boiling over with heated discussion of Apple’s new iPad today. Love it or hate it (and a lot of you seem to hate it), it’s hard not to see it as a pretty bold statement of what Apple thinks general-purpose computing should look like in the future: a giant iPhone. As you can imagine, that’s a provocative vision, and it’s simply not possible to try and condense the opinions of the staff into one Grand Unified Theory of the iPad — so we’re going to do what we did for the Kindle DX and the Droid , and let everyone speak for themselves

Quick Off the Mark: TOM BIHN Introduces Two Bags for Apple iPad
We over here at GD are still panting from our limited exposure to the iPad announcement earlier in the day. Most of us want to get our hands on one and play, play, play. But shortly after you stop panting, you start thinking: “Hmm,” you think. “I wonder what new gear bag I’ll need for the cool iPad when I get one? A gear bag in which I can keep my new iPad safe, and still have room for a wireless keyboard, magic mouse, car keys, geek tool, wallet, and all the rest of the junk I haul around all the time.” Well, earning big props from Mr. Doug for being so quick out of the gate with a possible answer is Tom Bihn, who within just a few hours of the iPad’s announcement had already made not one but two of their high-quality bags available for that very thing: the Cache and the Ristretto , available exclusively through the TOM BIHN website or Seattle Factory Showroom. Our own Jessica Fritsche in particular loves her Ristretto ( reviewed by Judie, here )

Apple lifts VoIP over cellular restrictions in new iPhone SDK
Great news for the VoIP world: iCall, the maker of the iCall VoIP iPhone app that can catch a GSM call and flip it over to WiFi, has issued a press release saying that the new iPhone SDK allows for VoIP over 3G cellular connections. Previously such calls had to be made over WiFi, since AT&T’s network (or someone well acquainted with AT&T’s network) didn’t think it was man enough to take the VoIP traffic. Interestingly, iCall says its 3G-friendly VoIP app is available now, and is the first and only such app in the App Store — which seems like some pretty quick turnaround on everyone’s part, but apparently the 3G restriction wasn’t anything to do with the software itself, but instead a server-side block. We just tested this out and it totally works, and while we’ll be looking for more verification that the ban has indeed been lifted, it sounds like it’s time for some cheaply connected international parties in the streets

FujiFilm FinePix S2500HD, S1730, S1600, and JX530 leak out
We’re guessing FujiFilm planned to get official with these at or slightly before PMA next month, but a new batch of its cameras have somehow managed to leak out well beforehand, including the FinePix S2500HD, S1730, S1600 (pictured above), and JX530. All of those fall into the mid-level or “bridge camera” range, with the S2500HD filling out the high-end of the spectrum with an 18x optical zoom, mechanical image stabilization and, of course, HD video recording (720p, to be specific).

RIM teases on Facebook, BlackBerry Tour 9650 release imminent
CrackBerry caught a quick screen shot of the BlackBerry Facebook account attempting to… actually, to be honest, we’re not sure what exactly they are trying to do. The post has been removed, but it read: “The BlackBerry Tour 9650 is coming! Check back soon for official news!” We’re a little perplexed as to why RIM didn’t go with the Tour2, like the Storm2 and why the announcement was made via their Facebook account (and on Apple’s Tablet day?). In any regard, any Tour 9630 owners feel a little shafted by the existence of the 9650?
