Love your jailbroken iPhone? Don’t update to 3.1.3

Consider this a PSA from one person with a jailbroken iPhone to another: Don’t upgrade to the just released iPhone OS 3.1.3. The iPhone dev team — the guys who make all of this jailbreaking stuff possible — have just confirmed that the PwnageTool and redsn0w jailbreak/unlock tools do not work with iPhone OS 3.1.3. In this endless (and really, mostly futile on Apple’s part) game of cat-and-mouse, it’s almost certain that the ridiculous talented folks in the iPhone hacking community will find their way in in no time flat – but in the mean while, hold off updating. It’s all minor bug fixes anyway.

iPhone OS 3.1.3 now live on iTunes

Before you start scrambling for your phone, laptop and data cable, just relax for a second. The latest update to the iPhone software, version 3.1.3, is a minor one. A quick glance at the changelog shows that the update will improve accuracy on the reported battery level on the 3GS, which is a huge help because we’ve sometimes seen it go from 20% to dead in just seconds. The launching of third-party apps should no longer lead to any weird crashes and the Japanese Kana keyboard is fixed

The Glory Days of Gaming – On Your iPhone/iTouch

You know what’s missing from your iPhone?  According to the team at Sega , that would be a hedgehog, dolphin, and dragon-riding dwarf.  And their remedy happens to be a new iPhone application (aptly titled the “Ultimate Genesis Collection”) that turns your iPhone/iPod touch into a virtual Sega console.  Fans of old Sega titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, and Golden Axe will soon be able to relive these classic games on the go.  The application provides users with virtual buttons on the side of the screen that mimic the controllers from the original Sega Genesis system.  In addition to playing the games, users will also have the ability to save mid-game — a perk that didn’t exist on the original console.  The emulator app will be available sometime this month, free of charge.  Games, however, will range from 2.99 to 5.99.

Lets compare, shall we? Exhibit A – Droid commercial: Stealth planes! Missiles! Dudes with beards, explosions, and guys on horses – oh my! Exhibit B – Palm Pre Plus commercial: Chocolate nougat, bad haircuts, and pictures of babies .

iPhone Stanza App Gets The Threat To Remove USB Support

The Stanza app is a program for the iPhone which is an eBook reader.  It is slick software, easy to use, and allows you to load books via USB cable.  Well, it did. The latest update from iTunes for the Stanza app indicates the USB connectivity feature will be removed from the application.  So if you want it, don’t update it. The Washington Post called the maker, Lexcycle, and asked about the details and their spokes person said, “[Lexcycle is] forbidden from discussing the specifics of the conversations with Apple on this matter.” It’s fair to say that Apple is keeping complete control of the device so that additional storage [non iTunes content] cannot be loaded along with reducing any virus possibilities hitch-hiking in via removable storage. Minneapolis Hackerspace: Twin Cities Maker

After announcing the grand opening of a St. Louis Hackerspace, we received a tip that another group of our readers had an event coming up. Twin City Maker of the Minneapolis/St.Paul area are hosting a Maker Faire and art show next weekend. Unfortunately, we don’t have any writers in that neck of the woods, so there wont be an official Hack a Day presence, but we are sure all of you who make it out there will do us proud.

Sphynx Cats Play Feline Skins Game To Win

[ By Steve in Animals & Habitats , Home & Garden , Science & Research . ] Sphynx cats make up for their lack of hair with an abundantly affectionate personality. Though not nearly as common as hairless dogs, Sphynx cats are gaining in popularity, mainly through word of mouth. Fed up with allergy inducing cat dander, shed cat hair and hairballs?

Easy multithreading on Arduino with Concurrency

Enjoy programming microcontrollers, but frustrated about how difficult it can be to get them to do more than one thing at a time? Well, then you might be interested in Concurrency , an open source programming language and environment specifically designed with multithreading in mind. That means you can write programs that do multiple things at the same time, without interfering with each other. Of course, you could achieve the same things using a stock Arduino with some crafty coding or timer interrupts , however using a purpose-built language such as this could be a great way to get your feet wet in threaded computing. Check out their website for source code and Creative Commons-licensed tutorials! Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in Arduino | Digg this!

iPad bezel has spot for a camera

Looks like those of you who were sure that the iPad would have a camera were almost right. If the iPad internal bezel component is anything to go buy, it looks like Apple decided late in the game to not include a camera in their soon-to-be-released tablet – that, or they were keeping their options open. In the image above, you see the iPad bezel at the top, and a bezel for a unibody MacBook at the bottom. In the middle is the camera that slips into the MacBook frame, and as you can see, it fits perfectly into the iPad frame as well.

Web designers: stop wasting time breaking the Internet

What is it about some web designers that, instead of spending time on developing a great user interface and making the site look good, decide to add code that breaks basic functionality. A couple of days ago someone sent me a link to an article about gadget discounts. When I visited the site, not only was the link to the manufacturer not hyperlinked, but the left mouse button had been disabled when the pointer was over text in order to stop copy and pasting. I had to type in the URL because I could neither click through nor C&P. Huh?

Apple said to have halted production of 27″ iMacs

For a company that goes on and on and on and on and on to infinity about how well its products are made, Apple sure has a disaster on its hands in the 27″ iMac. As many of you no doubt recall, the market-place introduction of the monstrously large desktop computer was rather disastrous as 27-inchers that didn’t happen to emerge from their boxes bearing a striking resemblance to Humpty Dumpty after his fall would either be suffering from screen flickering or a bad case of jaundice. Apple tried to fix the issue in weeks past which only led to a delay of shipments, but now word is the company finally decided enough is enough and halted the production of all 27″ iMacs until a permanent solution is found. What do existing owners have to look forward to
