Monster Acquires Yahoo Hot Jobs for $225 Million

Monster has announced that they will be acquiring the “assets” of Yahoo HotJobs for $225 million in cash. I’m not going to scrape the press release, you can read it here. I wonder what will be left of Yahoo after all of their consolidations, partnerships and sales. Yahoo says today’s sale will allow them to focus on their core businesses and, “delivering exceptional experiences to users, partners and advertisers.” Here are the specific particulars regarding the agreement on top of the HotJobs acquisition, “Monster and Yahoo! have also entered into a three year commercial traffic agreement, to take effect upon the closing of the acquisition, in which Monster will become Yahoo!’s provider of career and job content on the Yahoo! homepage in the United States and Canada. The traffic agreement calls for performance based annual payments calculated by clicks and expressions of interest, subject to annual floors and ceilings

Comcast smears the XFINITY brand across all its services

Apparently worried its On Demand Online project would suffer the shame of a silly name all by its lonely , Comcast has rebranded its cable TV, internet and phone services as Xfinity TV, Xfinity Internet and Xfinity Voice. Other than the name not much is changing (@ComcastCares will still be doing its thing on Twitter), although the rollout of the new branding (starting next week, the first 11 markets include Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Chicago, Portland, Seattle, Hartford, Augusta, Chattanooga, parts of the Bay Area and San Francisco) should sync up with 50mbps or high speeds becoming available. Of course, if those slick flame colored letter started showing up on TV repair guy trucks at the same time as a truly revolutionary new DVR software package instead of the slightly spruced up version we’ll be getting over the next few months , then they could call it anything they want to. Comcast smears the XFINITY brand across all its services originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 00:42:00 EST.

JooJoo tablet shipping this month, full Flash support and app store at launch

The iPad may have taken the media by storm, but the JooJoo , formerly known as the CrunchPad, is back, and hot on Apple’s heels.  The JooJoo’s starting off full production, that’s right and maker Fusion Garage has announced that the product is set to start shipping this month. Fusion Garage CEO Chandra revealed that they’ve teamed up with Malaysia’s largest OEM, CSL Group, to cover the tablet manufacturing costs; in return CSL will get a slice of the revenue pie.  And read this, it’s confirmed that the tablet will feature full Flash support at launch, and even HD Flash content once Flash 10.1 is released. The other thing?  A web app store is in the works, Chandra claiming “We have a bigger ‘app store’ than Apple because we have the full Internet,”.  Apparently JooJoo means along the lines of “magical” in African – which is how Steve Jobs exactly described the iPad.  And they cost the same at $499 each.  The JooJoo may have a larger 12-inch screen compared to the iPad’s 9.7-incher, but who knows what Apple may concoct up – something larger, and even more “magical”? FUSION GARAGE MOVES INTO FULL PRODUCTION OF BREAKTHROUGH JOOJOO Tablet Innovative Manufacturing Agreement and Investment from CSL Group Helps Reinvent Consumer Electronics Business Model SINGAPORE, February 3, 2010 – Fusion Garage today announced that its category-creating JooJoo Internet tablet has moved into full production with initial shipments expected to reach consumers at the end of February. Helping fuel the JooJoo’s arrival and Fusion Garage’s next phase of corporate growth is an innovative manufacturing agreement and strategic investment from mobile device OEM and distribution giant CSL Group of Malaysia.

Did You Get The Memo About The T&A Reports? (NSFW)

Did you get the memo about the T&A reports? It’s just that we are putting a boob note or an ass note on all of our T&A reports now. A boob note if it’s a T report and a butt note if it’s an A. So if you could go ahead and try to remember to do that from now on, that’d be great

kululua Airline’s Rebranding Is Like Aviation 101

By Andrew Liszewski If you’re ever flying on South Africa’s kulula airline you’ll never have to worry about hearing an intercom announcement asking if there’s a pilot on board, because their recent rebranding will leave every passenger with a basic knowledge of aviation and aircraft. It’s rather clever and educational (I had no idea where the black box was stashed) though something tells me it would never fly in certain countries (no pun intended) because who knows how this knowledge could be used. 3D portion of HDMI 1.4 specs available to public

HDMI Licensing, LLC announced a few moments ago that the three-dimensional portion of HDMI 1.4 specifications is now available for public download at the official HDMI site.  With HDMI specs for 3D already out, we may see 3DTVs come to market even sooner than we may think. ”The HDMI Consortium recognizes the importance of standardized 3D formats for movies, gaming and broadcast content and the need for non-adopter companies and organizations to have access to that portion of the HDMI Specification,” said Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing, LLC. “As the mainstream adoption of 3D is gaining momentum and content providers define and expand their 3D roadmaps, HDMI is ready to support this major market development.” HDMI has simplified my A/V/ lifestyle, combining multiple audio and video signals into one connection, I only require a single HDMI cable for each device hooked up to my receiver.  This move insures that 3D viewing technology will definitely be available to consumers in the near future. WebOS homebrew MyTether app updated, brings WiFi hotspots to Verizon Palms w/o the extra subscription

Since the last time we mentioned it, the MyTether app for WebOS phones has gone up in price from a requested $10 donation to $14.95, but that’s still considerably cheaper than Verizon’s $40 per month Mobile Hotspot plan. We’re still leery about what usage/overusage could mean for your contract & bill, but a new beta version has been posted that officially supports the Pre Plus and according to the developer “makes use of the API calls behind MHS” to let it work more smoothly. Even with the Pre’s openness to hackery we had some issues getting the beta installer to operate on our Windows 7 machine but once it was installed it worked as promised, giving comparable speeds to a dedicated EV-DO card on the same network

Revo Ikon Could Tempt Me To Buy A Digital Radio

Considering the sheer number of internet radio stations available to stream for free through my PC, the concept of an ad-laden digital radio station does nothing for me. The cost of upgrading your radio hardware is also a bit of turn off. But the Revo Ikon digital radio also features a dock for your iPod or iPhone and a nifty little touchscreen, which might just be enough to tempt me over to the DAB+ side… (more…)

Symbian OS going free and open source for first time

Starting Thursday , the source code for Symbian’s operating system platform will become entirely open source and free (Symbian’s software currently powers most of the smartphones in the world, and is owned by Nokia).  Tomorrow hence the day developers will be able to download, alter, and apply the software at no costs at all. “The dominant operating system provider out there is Symbian,” says Lee Williams, executive director of the Symbian Foundation, “and now we are offering developers the ability to do so much more.” Symbian software is used on over 330 million phones around the world, as stated by the Symbian Foundation.  It’s facing increasingly dynamic competition in the smart phone arena from Apple’s iPhone OS platform as well as Google’s Android OS, the two front-runners at the moment.  However, Symbian phones have never topped sales charts in the US – will that start to change soon? The Pirate Party Hedged Its Bets On Today’s iiNet Trial

It makes sense that anyone involved (or even anyone with a real interest) in today’s iiNet vs AFACT court ruling would prepare a statement for either outcome. Then, when the victor was announced, they could send the appropriate release. But the Australian Pirate Party was über-keen, sending out a press release for both outcomes just after midnight last night. (more…)

Next iPhone may possibly record HD video in 720p?

Okay, so Apple’s iPod Nano doesn’t exactly have the best video recording of all gadgets, but HD video is gradually shaping up to be a crucial feature to be included in next-generation devices.  Some hints have surfaced that HD video may just be implemented on the next iPhone. If you’ve seen our post on the “N89” codename in the iPhone OS SDK, a tipster has just taken a look at the MediaValidator.plist file  - it reveals several enlightening stats: the maximum video width is up from 768 pixels to 1280, and the maximum number of pixels per frame is up to 921,600, resulting in a 1280 x 720 resolution. The device’s AVC profile has been bumped from 3.0 to 3.1, too, which adds support for 720p

Welcome to the Godwin Event Horizon

The other day I was stuck in the midst of what had become a very heated debate regarding video game DRM (digital rights management), DLC (downloadable content), disks, downloads, rights, and piracy … and was amazed that in spite of strong opinions and polarized stances that the heated discussion stayed pretty respectful and stayed away from foul language, personal attacks, and other things that typify a ‘flame war’. It was in stark contrast to a discussion I briefly entered late last week that … [ visit site to read more ] Related posts: Social Media needs disclosure aka you can’t tell the vendors from the regular folk Is Greed Good on the Internet

Apple gets a patent on smart screen bezels

Apple might have finally released the iPad , but the rumor mill is already on to prognosticating about the next rev — and as usual, Apple’s patents and patent applications are everyone’s favorite place to start. (And for good reason, really — that very first design patent we inititally noticed way back in 2004 is exactly what the iPad looks like, down to the bezel and Dock connector.) The latest tidbit is a patent granted earlier this week on an intelligent touch-sensitive bezel, which would essentially extend the touchpanel beyoned the edges of the screen to create an entire border of context-specific soft buttons — the iPod app might have playback controls at the bottom, while Safari could put the navigation bar down there and Pages could do formatting stuff at the top. It’s sort of interesting — Palm similarly extends the touch area beyond the screen on the Pre and the Pixi, but not quite like this — but we can’t see how touching the bezel next to an on-screen label is much better than just pressing the screen. Of course, there’s no guaranteeing Apple’s actually going to use any of this in any future products whatsoever, but we’re sure that won’t stop some analyst from waving their magic analyst wand and saying their “supply checks” have indicated a major ODM is already producing these.

Sony may start charging for PSN?

Well, we can all blame Hulu for starting the no-more-free content movement, now since Sony may also start charging users for access to the PSN service.  This doesn’t exactly encourage me to get the new PS3 I was considering, Sony. The head of PSN revealed in an interview with IGN today:  “Maybe a longer answer to a shorter question, but I think there is just tremendous improvements to the PlayStation Network, which leads me to your last question: will we charge for it or why don’t we charge for it? It’s been our philosophy not to charge for it from launch up until now, but Kaz recently went on the record as saying that’s something we’re looking at. I can confirm that as well.
