Google Chrome OS revealed – take a look

Google has finally taken the wraps off of Chrome OS , its new Linux-based operating system that is all Internet-centric, running the Google Chrome browser as its main application. Yeah, the whole point of the Google Chrome OS is that it is web-based, and you interact pretty much exclusively in a browser window. The way Google sees it, you spend 95% of the time you are on a computer living in your web browser anyway, so Chrome OS is built to optimize that experience. Nothing is actually stored on the computer itself, as everything is stored, instead, in the cloud. Hit up the video above for Google’s introduction to Chrome OS, and we’ve got another video after the break taking a look at the UI concept.

Intel and AMD Make Peace Not War For Now

Last week, Intel, the microprocessor manufacturer fell under fire for possibly violating monopoly laws and sub-sequentially announced that it would settle with long-time rival AMD by paying them $1.25 billion dollars . The legal battle stems from Intel’s business practice of paying for a consumer rebates on computer purchases in exchange for the computer company’s use of Intel microprocessors. By offering the consumer huge rebates, Intel was able to capture 80% of the market, therefore the company was considered to unfairly bar AMD from a truly competitive market

Acer Neo Touch F1 Review

Acer should not be an unknown name to many purchasers of mobile electronics; they have been producing laptops for quite a while now. In fact, they are the leading laptop manufacturer in the world, and second only to HP in computer manufacture. Acer is a fairly new name in the world of mobile phone manufacture though, and really their path in this industry has started to come about since their acquisition of E-Ten products. E-Ten had started promoting its own brand, Glofiish, but since the acquisition all products will be branded with the Acer name.

Intel’s Legal Woes: Justice or Witch Hunt?

It was announced mid last week that Microprocessor giant Intel was being sued by New York’s Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for violating United States antitrust laws. Intel is accused of coercing computer manufacturers such as Dell and HP into purchasing Intel microprocessor chips in exchange for payment. Rather than paying the companies directly, Intel offered to pay for the manufacturer’s consumer rebates, giving these companies a competitive edge and a huge incentive to purchase the Intel x86 microprocessor. Cuomo and the New York State government argue that this violates antitrust laws because it discourages competition in the marketplace.

Vobis Computer Announces the Highscreen Zeus, its Second Android Smartphone

In July we reported on a new player in the Android market called Highscreen. Highscreen is a smartphone brand made by Vobis Computer, and in July released a device called the PP5420 that was virtually a Mobinnova Ice except with Android inside, and was launched in Russia. Now the same company, Vobis Computer, has announced its next attempt at Android called the Highscreen Zeus, which will be launched in Russia at an unknown time for 13,990 rubles ($483 US). Needless to say, the Zeus has a much nicer ring to the name than PP5420 ever did

Didgeridoo modded to include electronic manipulation

It’s not a bazooka, but this altered instrument makes it look like the player is toking off of some type of weapon. [Kyle] wanted to take the already mysterious sounds produced by a didgeridoo then capture and alter them electronically . The physical build of this project is nothing short of beautiful. He’s mounted several curved control boards to the outside of the instrument. The controls feature six push buttons, five toggle switches, and six potentiometers that interface with an Arduino

Sony and Atracsys develop 3D interface for ORs, sci-fi franchises (video)

You know what the world needs? Another company peddling their take on the touch interface as being “just like Minority Report !” Sun , Raytheon , Oblong — it’s a pretty obvious press hook (as well as a pretty awesome area of research ), but every once in a while some such technology does come around that begs for a closer look. A collaboration between Sony Europe and Atracsys (a Swiss company specializing in optical tracking) ICU is a dual camera-based system that tracks and analyzes body movements in three dimensions, in real-time.

Microsoft messes with ‘natural’ user interface, featuring eye tracking, voice control and wild body gestures

While today’s Windows might not look completely out of place next to a Windows of yore, Microsoft Research certainly has some wild ideas for how to progress computer interaction. In a talk during Microsoft’s college tour, Craig Mundle has been touting his research wares, including some pretty reasonable advances like auto completion of common concepts; automatic, intelligent sorting of large amounts of data; and a movable, modular work surface. One of the odder demos involves moving the LCD so it’s flat on the desk and then using huge arm movements to manipulate a 3D model projected onto a piece of glass, and the demonstration of eye-tracking is intriguing while not altogether convincing

Apparently though this is only limited to the good ole US of A due to licensing issues, but should work well with the new Motorola Droid and Droid Eris.

Cellphone inventor says they’ve become ‘too complicated,’ rock-n-roll too loud

You know that smartphone you love, that ultimate expression of handheld convergence that some would call a mobile computer? It’s crap. Or so says octogenarian, Martin Cooper, former lead engineer at Motorola said to have invented the handheld cellphone — really, his name is on the “Radio telephone system” patent and he’s credited with making the very first private handheld cellphone call from a busy New York City street on April 3rd, 1973. Well Marty doesn’t like those newfangled handsets. In fact, according to our sterling Mr.

The N900: A Game Changer for Nokia (First Impressions)

The N900: A Game Changer for Nokia? The release of the N900 comes at an important time in Nokia’s history. Despite a new Symbian operating system, new touch handsets, and a growing smartphone market, the company’s smartphone division is faltering, with market share dropping 6% in the previous quarter. It’s not too hard to see why: competition is fierce, with Apple and Android phones getting better, cheaper, and faster. Add to that Nokia’s Symbian S60 operating system, which hasn’t evolved with the times, and things are looking pretty grim
