Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results

This dude is Hans Christian Ørsted, whose 1820 discovery that electric current produced magnetic fields was, supposedly, entirely accidental: He was preparing a voltaic pile for a lecture demonstration and there happened to be a compass lying nearby. He has become a sort of mascot for the Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results (JSUR) , a new open-access journal initiative that hopes to provide a forum for life and computer scientists to publish results they lucked into and maybe can’t fully explain. From their website: Can you demonstrate that: * Technique X fails on problem Y. * Hypothesis X can’t be proven using method Y. * Protocol X performs poorly for task Y.

Forget Trackballs, Get Ergonomic with a Trackbar

Are you all about an ergonomic workspace? Me, I’m a slouching, crossleg sitting, traditional mouse and keyboard using geek. That doesn’t mean that I don’t ‘think’ about trying alternative input devices though. I happened to run across the Emotion Trackbar Ergonomic Mouse and it seems more unusual than most. It has two 1000 dpi optical sensors.

Google enables extension and bookmark syncing for Chrome on Windows

Today, Google released an updated version of its Chrome web browser for the Windows platform, adding a highly requested feature: extension and bookmark syncing. Linux fans, although currently able to install extensions, won’t have access to bookmark and extension syncing just yet. As for Mac users, Google had this to say, “hang tight — we’re working on bringing extensions, bookmark sync and more to the beta soon.” Firefox users who leverage the XMarks (formerly FoxMarks) extension know the value of bookmark syncing, and many FF users — present company included — lust for an easy way to keep extensions synchronized between multiple computers. Perhaps this latest move by the Chrome team will spark the likes of Apple and Mozilla to think about building more synchronization functionality into their respective browsers? Until that does happen, all interested parties can head over to google.com/chrome to check out the latest build.

The HTC Hero Reviewed

It took me a while to review an HTC Hero , now known as the predecessor to the Google Nexus One. The summary? Pretty fast and responsive, and the PDA phone benefits from HTC’s customization of the Android OS. But some issues with the speaker volume, integrated camera, and a lack of a physical keyboard were encountered

So is it Disc, or Disk?

Well that depends actually: ” ‘Compact disc’ is spelled with a ‘C’ because that’s how its inventors decided it should be rendered; but a computer hard disk is spelled with a ‘K’ In modern technological contexts, ‘disks’ usually reproduce data magnetically, while ‘discs’ (CD-ROMs, DVDs, etc.) reproduce it ‘optically,’ with lasers. So we have Philips and Sony to thank for the one-letter confusion. They’re the co-inventors of the widely used optical dis c format, and the naming convention has lived on with the DVD, and of course, Blu-Ray Discs. If I may propose an addition to Common Errors in English Usage , where the above passage came from : when talking about a weapon, we should use C. An example would be the Predator ’s Chakram, which is also known as the smart dis c , and is a technologically-advanced boomerang of sorts (yes, the title of the video below is a mistake): (Image from GiveMeRoots ) Post from: The Gadget Blog
