Gear Deal: October is ProClip USA Customer Appreciation Month with a 10% Discount
I don’t know about you, but I’m constantly worrying about having to juggle my iPhone (with the map on it) while I’m driving. I don’t want to–it’s dangerous, and makes me nervous as heck. And personally, I hate those vocal, turn-by-turn programs–”In 100 feet, turn right!” generic woman with bland voice says brightly. It’s not for me. Proclip has always offered multiple solutions, and this month there’s an incentive to buy one and stop my stressful juggling attempts: they are offering 10% off of their products at checkout time.

floppy disk sticky notes
I remember my first 3.5-inch disk. It was a copy of MacPaint on the original Mac 128k, and it was so amazing compared to the 5.25 and 8-inch floppies of my youth. Eventually, I had boxes and boxes of the little hard-shelled floppies, each one with various and sundry Mac wares (and WareZ) loaded on them, and some cryptic description scrawled on the label. Now that the venerable floppy has gone the way of the dinosaur, I figure these fun floppy sticky notes are the perfect remembrance.

The Value of Tracking Software
Today, you can hardly see someone who does not have his or her own mobile phone. GPS tracking devices weren’t popular before and only the military were using them. These devices were used to track their units and even enemy targets. However, these days, there are lots of GPS tracking devices especially for vehicles. In fact mobile companies are adding GPS tracking features in their services.

Adobe Air Android Arrives … Apps Already Arriving
If you hear ‘Adobe Air’ and think ‘huh?’, you are not alone. Unlike Flash, which is a pretty high-profile content-enabler (and computer disabler if you listen to Steve Jobs), Air is a much smaller and lighter component which has become more popular recently, and is used to fuel things like TweetDeck, the Good Old Games downloader, and the corporate Twitter-alike Yammer. There are a ton more, as evidenced by this article pointing out 60+ Air applications you should know . About a month or so ago Adobe announced that they would bring the Air platform to Android smartphones, and today they have done just that! You can now grab it from the Android Market, though it is a relatively chunky 5.7MB (not clear if you can move it to the SD card).

Sketching with the Nokia N900
The N900 was perhaps the most interesting device that Nokia brought market last year. Regular readers will know that I am far more interested in the concept of a pocket computer than a smart phone, the N900 is clearly more computer than phone. As such you would expect people to attempt to use the N900 for the kind of tasks that they would normal perform on a regular computer. And they do. Michelle , a fellow creative and technology fan, has recently been trialling a Nokia N900 with the goal of creating some digital art with the Sketch application

distellamap: Modern Visualizations of Atari 2600 code
Software is a mix of computer instructions and data, but rarely do you get to see how the two interact in memory. Ben Fry visualized the code of several classic video games , giving insight in to the complexity of the code and how the programmer arranged the graphical elements. It’s also amazing how little was required to implement some of these games – Pitfall fits on one page . To see how far we’ve come, the visualization graphic is 1200KB, while game was only 4KB. Beefy battery backup still running after a decade
In 1997 [Michael Butkus Jr.] found an uninterruptible power supply in the dumpster. The batteries were shot, but he needed a backup to keep his pellet stove running for heat, drive the exhaust fan to keep the smoke out of the house, and power his computer and other electronics. After a bit of head scratching he decided to beef up the UPS using deep-cycle batteries

The Blackberry Playbook: The Ipad’s Succesor?
The line between phones and computers becomes more blurred with every few months of technology that passes. The original move was the release of the iPhone , and the subsequent smartphone releases that followed. These handsets featured call, mobile email and text capabilities, cameras as per previous phone models, and increased usability such as word processors, applications, and a touchscreen. Connection ports were added so that phones no longer served solely as contact devices, but could be hooked up to other systems and used for entertainment purposes. After a few generations of the smartphone, and in a different part of the technology family, the popularity of the netbook laptop, Apple had a groundbreaking idea to merge the two into a new form of technology – the tablet computer.

Don’t Limit Your iPad From USB
You might have heard the next gen iPad will include a miniUSB port, but for those looking for an easier interface today, or want a standard USB interface for even the upcoming iPad, you should get the USB connector kit from USB Fever. The kit has a SD and USB connector which talks with the iPad through the female Apple connector you use for synchronizing or connecting to your computer. The kit gives you an easier way to upload images, video and PDF documents. It also gives you an easier way to connect your iPhone or other digital camera or video recorder to your iPad. Hell, you could almost toss out the PC…oh way, you’ve still got to sync and update. The USB port could also be used to connect your keyboard to the iPad for typing emails, etc. Sure you all love the keypad on the iPad, but it’s still not as easy to use as a traditional keyboard. Concise electronics for geeks
Make: Online fixture Michal Zalewski has built a rep for his incredibly detailed and precise how-tos. Now he has written another, the ultimate how-to for people interested in learning electronics . There are quite a few primers on electronics on the Internet; sadly, almost all of the top hits resort to gross oversimplifications (e.g., hydraulic analogies), or convenient omission, when covering subtle but incredibly important topics such as the real-world behavior of semiconductors

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-Portable Drive and eSATA Upgrade Cable Review
My laptop has a lot of very important things on it. I have documents that I created or scanned in. I have tons of music that I bought from iTunes or invested hours ripping from CDs. I have hundreds of ebooks. We switched to digital cameras years ago, so most of the pictures I have of my daughter and all the pictures I have of the last few years of my parents’ lives are digital. Backups are VERY important to me. I currently have a Seagate external drive that I use for backup. That disk works well except for its size. It’s a big disk with an external power source, and it’s too big to fit on the tiny table I use for my laptop. I keep the backup drive on my sofa’s end table, and I’ve accidentally pulled it to the floor on more than one occasion while moving my laptop desk around. I’ve been lucky so far that the disk hasn’t been damaged, but I’m afraid my luck won’t hold out forever. I was thrilled when Julie asked me to review a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-portable USB 2.0 external disk. I already liked Seagate drives, and I knew that the small form factor of this disk would work better with my cramped workspace.
