Mobile Edge EVO Backpack Review and Giveaway!
I normally hate traveling for work; juggling a computer, work files, ebook reader, etc. is a pain. However, now that I’ve been trying the Mobile Edge Evo Backpack for a few weeks, I wish I traveled more often so I could use a bag like this! My first impression of the Evo backpack was that it was a complete beast of a bag. It seemed physically large, but when I put it on it didn’t feel as big

iPhone saga: Free speech fight ends quietly
A brewing free-speech debate touched off by a lost prototype of Apple’s iPhone has ended quietly with a blogger’s agreement to cooperate with investigators. Thomas J Nolan Jr, a lawyer for Jason Chen of Gizmodo.com, said Monday that technology website agreed to the deal with prosecutors to resolve the case as quickly as possible. A judge on Friday ordered a search warrant withdrawn and seized items returned to Chen. The website posted images in April of a prototype iPhone left in a Redwood City bar by an Apple employee. Gizmodo said it paid money for the phone

Hands-free input
This is a concept input device that [Tech B] built for disabled users. The device uses an accelerometer along with a piezo sensor (right click) and a push button (left click) to function as a mouse. The Arduino that resides in a breadboard on the side of the hat communicates with the computer over a serial connection, using PySerial to translate the microcontroller data into cursor commands with the power and ease of the Python programming language. During development [Tech B] made a proof-of-concept video using a Basic Stamp which you can watch after the break

Amazon Announces Huge eBook Sales Numbers As the Sky Falls on Publishers
(image courtesy Vator.tv ) Amazon is normally very tight-lipped about Kindle sales. Today, though, they pulled back the curtain a bit, and the peek inside should be enough to send traditional publishing and bookstores screaming for their xanax. Apparently, in the last three months, Amazon has sold 180 Kindle eBooks for every 100 hardcover books

Pogoplug Drops The Pink, Goes Business Class
By Evan Ackerman I’ve had my Pogoplug for a several months now, and I’m still a big fan… Enough of a fan to have gone and bought a couple for my job (what, you think I blog for a living? HA!). Now I’m kicking myself, though, because Pogoplug is introducing the Pogoplug Biz, which not only includes a whole bunch of useful business-y features, but also comes in a color that isn’t purplish-pink. Chiefly, the Pogoplug Biz is a way of making stuff on your computers (say, projects) available to other people (say, clients) in a way that’s easy for you to manage and easy for them to access. The Biz differs from the regular Pogoplug (which also has this capability) by letting you control the entire process, customizing the Pogoplug interface to integrate directly with your business and avoiding the inevitable question from your clients of “what the heck is a Pogoplug and why do I have to get my files from it?” There’s a whole host of other cool stuff that you can do with the Pogoplug Biz, and we’ve got the entire rundown, after the jump.

So long XP SP2, it was good to know you
It was heralded as a game changer when it was released nearly six years ago, but now it’s being let out to pasture without a path back to the barn. It’s Windows XP Service Pack 2 and last week, Microsoft released the last security patches it’s ever going to release for that version of its operating system.

hot touch arcade emulator: fake pinball machine accepts real coins
Ben Heck chose to make his Bill Paxton pinball machine the old fashioned way, using actual flippers and tunnels and whatnot. But there’s also another, less complicated way to make a pinball machine – by running an emulator on a computer.

HP Files Palmpad Trademark For webOS Tablet
Ever since HPO purchased Palm and announced that they would be investing heavily in Palm’s webOS, we knew that they would be producing a tablet computer based on webOS. Now HP have filed for a trademark, which we expect they will use for their webOS tablet, the trademark is called ‘Palmpad’. HP has recently put on hold the Google Android tablet it was developing and also the Window 7 based one. HP can obviously see great potential in using Palm’s webOS for a tablet, and with all the investment they are putting into webOS we can expect to see something pretty interesting. We still have no idea when HP will launch the Palmpad webOS based tablet, and what sort of specifications it will have, as soon as we get some more information we will let you guys know

VuPoint Magic Wand Scanner Review
I have an e-book reader I’m finding that I want to put everything that I have that is on paper into the device: books, magazine articles, users/owners manuals, cheat-sheets, blah, blah and blah. But after spending several hours scanning an out-of-print book that was falling apart using my standard Epson desktop scanner a few weeks ago, my enthusiasm faded. It just took too long per scanned page and I had to sit in front of or very near my desk for several hours. Plus, it required booting up my PC, logging on, waiting for boot up, firing up the scanner software, yada, yada and yada. And yes, I DO happen to be the laziest person on the planet. … [ visit site to read more ] Filed in categories: Desktop Computer Gear , Reviews , eBook Readers and Gear Tagged: Scanner VuPoint Magic Wand Scanner Review originally appeared on The Gadgeteer on July 19, 2010 at 12:19 pm.

humane reader: the $20 computer
I’ve certainly seen our share of low-cost computers , but I can honestly say that this is the least expensive computer system I’ve seen yet. The Humane Reader is designed to provide computer technology to homes or schools without internet access or the budget for traditional PCs or Macs. The 8-bit computer can turn any television into an e-Book/Wikipedia reader. As a matter of fact, its makers say you could store 5,000 books or more on a single 2GB SD card (included in the $20 cost). The creators of the Humane Reader state their value proposition simply: “The Humane Reader can provide a virtual library to any developing world school or individual with electrical power for less than the cost of a single textbook.” Based on the Atmega328p microcontroller (there are actually three of them in there), the open source Humane Reader can be loaded up with educational content via USB, and it can display output on any video display with composite input.

The new Echo Smartpen improves on the previous generation of Livescribe products with a sleek ergonomic design that features a rubberized grip and anti-roll surface, it’s also available with the biggest capacity ever – 8GB! Livescribe has also made charging the device more convenient, with a micro-USB connector, and the Echo now has a 3.5mm audio jack so that users can use whatever headphones they’d like with it. But I’ll be honest, I had my doubts about a pen that needs to be charged. But, Wow.

Nokia says they prioritize antenna performance over design
Hot on the heels of Steve Jobs’ claims that all (smart)phones are equally affected by reception issues when held in a certain way, Nokia decided to release this statement: “Antenna design is a complex subject and has been a core competence at Nokia for decades, across hundreds of phone models. Nokia was the pioneer in internal antennas; the Nokia 8810, launched in 1998, was the first commercial phone with this feature. Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying human behavior, including how people hold their phones for calls, music playing, web browsing and so on
