Tim Burton’s The Night Before Christmas Jack Skellington Becomes a USB Flash Drive
Remember Jack Skellington from the movie ‘Tim Burton’s The Night before Christmas’? Well for some reason that movie became a big cult and now Adata for some reason has turned the main character into a USB Flash Drive. Made of rubber and comes in capacities 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB it is also resists to spill water and external shock. Its USB connector is hidden inside the Jack and can be accessed by removing his head. It also comes with an extra USB cable in case you can’t easily stick him into a USB port on your computer. Jack may just scare your other funny looking USB shaped flash drives.

N97 Ovi Maps Free Navigation Officially Available [UPDATE via N97 itself]
Nokia Conversations reports that the N97 is now supported officially (some may have already found N97 mini’s ovi maps .sis to have worked for them) for the new Ovi Maps which brings users free turn-by-turn walk and drive navigation The new Ovi Maps is available through the software update client in the device . You simply open the Applications Folder, Software Update client (big green arrow) and choose the new Ovi Maps from the list. [You might even get a prompt from Ovi Maps itself telling you an update is available, and it'll bring you to SW update] At the big announcement last week, N97 users were shocked to find out they were not on the list of supported handsets for free turn-by-turn navigation. But very quickly, Nokia said that it would be available a week later on the 28th (technically tomorrow) You will need to be on firmware V2.0.x (some N97 users may not be able to get it yet but Nokia are apparently working on it) My N97 is on V20.0.019 – Nokia Software Updater on computer says that’s the latest firmware update

Researchers propose using undersea internet cables to detect tsunamis
We’ve heard of a few inventive ideas for detecting tsunamis, and it looks like a group of researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (or NOAA ) have now come up with another: put all those undersea internet cables to a second use. While they haven’t moved beyond computer models just yet, the group has apparently found that voltmeters attached to the end of an undersea cable are able to detect the small electric field stirred up by tsunamis, which measure around 500 millivolts. As New Scientist reports, however, the idea does have some considerable limitations, including that it wouldn’t be able to pinpoint the exact location or direction of a tsunami, and that any such system would first need to filter out noise caused by other natural events and even the cable itself. Other researchers also caution that it’s just as important to develop a system to quickly pass on a warning to potentially affected areas once a tsunami has been detected. Researchers propose using undersea internet cables to detect tsunamis originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 11:02:00 EST.

Unlike the iPhone, the Apple iPad “uses a display technology called IPS (in-plane switching) and has a wide, 178-degree viewing angle.” Plus, “the A4 chip inside iPad was custom-designed by Apple engineers to be extremely powerful, and yet extremely power efficient.” Click here for first picture in gallery. To maximize battery life, Apple engineers took the same lithium polymer battery technology they developed for our notebook computers and applied it to the iPad. As a result, you can use iPad for up to 10 hours while surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching videos, or listening to music. [via Apple ]

Outsourcing Potential 2010 – How Does It Look Like? (Part 1)
In the passing tough year best remembered for crisis, loss of jobs, and overall uncertainty, the outsourcing industry has made many gloomy headlines in the news resources. Interesting enough to note that the end of the year brings forecasts for the IT community as optimistic as long not heard. After the brutal 2009, we’re glad to receive some encouraging news again. With the leading and most trusted Forrester and Gartner at the front of the line, most other analyst houses and industry associations including IDC, IAOP, NOA echo with optimistic releases. Rejoice, IT! We’ve made it through! The Forrester’s loud statement “Tech downturn officially over” gave way to numerous sequential prognostications the quintessence of which sounds as follows: IT spending is set to grow in the coming year

O’Reilly donates £1000 to Bletchley Park
Bletchley Park , the historic site of secret British code breaking activities during WWII and the birthplace of the modern computer, is again in the news thanks to John Graham-Cumming ‘s book The Geek Atlas . O’Reilly pledged to give 50p per copy of the book sold in the UK to the Bletchley Park Fund and we are delighted to send our first cheque for £1000. Unfortunately not everyone has heard of the plight of Bletchley Park. The Bletchley Park Trust is aiming to preserve the core heritage of the site and to build on the work of the wartime pioneers through education and technology innovation

Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results
This dude is Hans Christian Ørsted, whose 1820 discovery that electric current produced magnetic fields was, supposedly, entirely accidental: He was preparing a voltaic pile for a lecture demonstration and there happened to be a compass lying nearby. He has become a sort of mascot for the Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results (JSUR) , a new open-access journal initiative that hopes to provide a forum for life and computer scientists to publish results they lucked into and maybe can’t fully explain. From their website: Can you demonstrate that: * Technique X fails on problem Y. * Hypothesis X can’t be proven using method Y. * Protocol X performs poorly for task Y.

Forget Trackballs, Get Ergonomic with a Trackbar
Are you all about an ergonomic workspace? Me, I’m a slouching, crossleg sitting, traditional mouse and keyboard using geek. That doesn’t mean that I don’t ‘think’ about trying alternative input devices though. I happened to run across the Emotion Trackbar Ergonomic Mouse and it seems more unusual than most. It has two 1000 dpi optical sensors.

Google enables extension and bookmark syncing for Chrome on Windows
Today, Google released an updated version of its Chrome web browser for the Windows platform, adding a highly requested feature: extension and bookmark syncing. Linux fans, although currently able to install extensions, won’t have access to bookmark and extension syncing just yet. As for Mac users, Google had this to say, “hang tight — we’re working on bringing extensions, bookmark sync and more to the beta soon.” Firefox users who leverage the XMarks (formerly FoxMarks) extension know the value of bookmark syncing, and many FF users — present company included — lust for an easy way to keep extensions synchronized between multiple computers. Perhaps this latest move by the Chrome team will spark the likes of Apple and Mozilla to think about building more synchronization functionality into their respective browsers? Until that does happen, all interested parties can head over to google.com/chrome to check out the latest build.
