HP gets back into smartpone biz with a vengeance. Buys Palm for $1.2 billion

It finally happened! Palm has finally threw in a towel in  it’s desperate struggle, and gave itself up to HP for a cool $1.2 billion. So, despite management’s assurances to the contrary,  it became clear recently that Palm has no chance of surviving as independent company. The only question was who will buy it.

Lok-it Adds Electric Keypad to Secure Flash Drive

Lok-it has a new take on the padlock flash drive and wants to show it to you. They’ve added a rechargeable battery to the padlock drive which powers their in-line security system. The correct key sequence has to be entered before the drive will even show up as active hardware. The security system essentially prevents any communication from the host computer to the drive until the password is physically entered. As a result, this removes the easy options for snoops

Why KIN and Windows Phone 7 Can Succeed – Getting User Experiences

It’s fortunate that we all have the ability as humans to grow, mature and learn from our mistakes and the mistakes of others. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the ability to adapt and learn. This fundamental principle not only applies to “macro” topics like culture; it applies to the little things as well.

Peeking into employee’s email can be no-no

Peeking into an employee’s Web mail accessed on a company computer during work hours can be illegal–at least in New Jersey, according to that state’s Supreme Court. In a 7-0 decision, the judicial panel upheld a lower court ruling that sanctioned a company for collecting email messages between an employee and her attorney stored on the employee’s company computer. “Finding that the policies undergirding the attorney-client privilege substantially outweigh the employer’s interest in enforcement of its unilaterally imposed regulation, we reject the employer’s claimed right to rummage through and retain the employee’s emails to her attorney,” the appellate court ruled in its decision upheld by the state’s high court.

4 Ways to Access Exchange Server Mailboxes through Firewalls

We are conducting our lives and our businesses in an increasingly mobile world.  We need access to our critical business information from multiple locations and using multiple devices. These needs often clash with the requirement to keep our data secure.  Exchange Servers are kept behind corporate firewalls which restrict who can access them and how they can connect to their mailboxes. Secure mobile access to mailboxes on Exchange Servers is typically achieved through one or more of these methods: Virtual Private Network (VPN) Outlook Anywhere Outlook Web App (OWA) ActiveSync Virtual Private Networks A VPN is a secure communications tunnel established between two endpoints.  These endpoints can be two devices such as routers or firewalls, or can be between a client device such as a laptop and a firewall

The iPad changes the game.

On Saturday, Apple released it’s new device, the iPad. I didn’t pre-order one, but I thought I would stop by our local Best Buy to see if I could snag one. If the line was too long I would just go home. Well, as I arrived at the building a mere 15 minutes before opening, I was ninth in line. I saw footage on TV later in the day that showed hundreds of people in lines at various locations around the states and Chicago in particular
