On the heels of our recent post on the Nike+ GPS app update , we talk about another iPhone application that does the similar thing… The outdoor social network for sports and fitness enthusiasts Map My Tracks wants its slice of the iPie, too. Their app is called OutFront and it provides “F1-style performance telemetry” for sailors, cyclists, runners and other outdoor sports. Users can track their activities, review performance and share the results live on the web — you can measure speed, pace, calories burned, elevation gain or loss and much more. Plus, there’s one unique thing about OutFront and that’s the ability to sing along Map My Tracks event management system that lets event organizers broadcast mass participation events online in real-time

North Korea has vehicle mounted GPS jammers

North Koreans are in possession of vehicle mounted GPS jamming devices that can have a range of 50 to 100 kilometers said South Korean defense minister last week (to their defense nobody asked Kim Jong Il if they could beam GPS signals on North Korea) Apparently these GPS jamming devices were imported from Russia but no information was available on their numbers. There’s also the potential issue of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) bombs that can detonate high above the atmosphere and release gamma rays that can destroy electronic devices and computers but it sounds like North Koreans haven’t had time to work on this just yet. via Brought to you by your GPS navigation site NaviGadget . Section: Communications , Cellphones , Smartphones , Mobile Among the mobile phone manufacturers that launched their Windows Phone 7 smartphones, Dell seems to be the odd man out. Well, we’ve known them for their power computers and netbooks but not as much as we know them for mobile phones. Anyway, for their share of the Windows Phone 7 frenzy , Dell is coming out with the Dell Venue Pro. Unfortunately, according to Dell, they are not yet ready to share full details of their Windows Phone 7 unit except for some major features that we should all expect from the unit.

Messenger app on iTunes . The updated app now brings with it support for WiFi and 3G video calls… video calls that can be made to any Yahoo! Messenger client, including those on computers and (soon) Android phones (if they have a front-facing camera). What else does it bring

Need remote access to your computer once in a while, but don’t want to leave it on and wasting power the rest of the time? Then you might want to check out this Remote PC Startup System by MAKE subscriber Blake Foster. He used an Arduino, Ethernet shield, and homebrew relay board to add a internet-enabled switch to be able to turn his computer on from anywhere he has Internet connection. He estimates that the savings on his power bill will pay for the hardware cost in about 3 months.

We just got a quick look at a previously Korea-bound Samsung X430 laptop that Microsoft has tapped as a “Microsoft Store Exclusive.” It’s pretty good hardware, both inside and outside, for the price. Also, due to its Store-exclusive nature, Microsoft also put the promised “Microsoft Signature Image” on here, which means a copy of Windows 7 completely free of crapware and trialware, though Microsoft has put a good quantity of first party software that you’ll probably want like Windows Live, Bing Maps 3D, and Microsoft Security Essentials

Yahoo Messenger 2.0 for iPhone hits App store, brings video calling over 3G

While a new update to the Yahoo Messenger app on the iPhone would be eventful in and of itself, the latest version brings a very special gift — video calling over 3G, and not just phone to phone, but phone to computer or vice versa. Unfortunately in our quick tests, video calling seems to be buggy, not reliable, and above all, pretty low in the quality department when we do manage to get it working. In addition to video calls, the newly updated Yahoo Messenger brings free voice calls to other Yahoo Messenger friends, supports background multitasking, and more

Apple Trademarks "There’s an App For That"

According to Apple, the first documented use of its catchphrase, “There’s an app for that,” was on Jan. 26, 2009 – even though it feels like that tagline has been around for much longer. Now, thanks to a recently-granted trademark , Apple owns the phrase. The application for trademark was filed last December, and covers “Retail store services featuring computer software provided via the Internet and other computer and electronic communication networks; retail store services featuring computer software for use on handheld mobile digital electronic devices and other consumer electronics.” What the heck does this mean? HTML5 promises a whole new realm of what’s possible both Online and especially in mobile, but experts are growing weary of the technology from a privacy point-of-view. In a New York Times article published over the weekend, numerous experts from all facets of the ecosystem gave their thoughts on what HTML5 will mean for the average consumer. The concern stems from the fact that the new Web language and its additional features present more tracking opportunities because the technology uses a process in which large amounts of data can be collected and stored on the user’s hard drive while online.
