LG Wine II Cell Phone Review–A Lesser Vintage

Sometimes the naming conventions on phones unnerve me.  And today’s review target, the LG Wine II, is definitely one of those.  Seriously, who names a phone “Wine”?  What’s next, the Samsung Jack and Coke?  Wait…they already did the Samsung Jack …oh man, it’s really only a matter of time until we get the Sony Ericsson Gin and Tonic! Seriously, though–names aside, the phone is more than the sum of its name, so how does it operate?  The answer, sadly, is not that great.  In fact, the LG Wine II proves to be a vintage best left in the bottle. The LG Wine II is a folder-style phone with an FM radio, voice recorder, Bluetooth connectivity, a phone book capable of storing ninety-nine name and number records, mobile web, text messaging, a two megapixel camera, alarm clock, calendar, calculator, hearing aid compatibility, and a battery that offers three hours and ten minutes of talk time on a single charge. You can see there’s not much to this at all.  It’s an extremely simple, extremely basic phone that doesn’t bring a whole lot of power to the table.  The battery power is low, the camera’s resolution is low, and the total number of features isn’t much better.  However, the phone is pretty easy to operate and the end result of a lack of features is a very simple phone.  If you want simple, then the LG Wine II will definitely go down smooth.  However, those looking for a complex phone that serves lots of functions, then this rotgut of a phone will never satisfy. The Good Very simple to operate The Bad Low end camera Low end battery Relatively low number of features Score 4 / 10 Related Posts LG UX280 Wine Cell Phone Review–Terrific Piece It’s not every day I get to say a lot of really nice things about a cell phone.  Seems like most of..

Skype 2.0.1 for iPhone rolls out, Features Multitasking support

Along with almost every other iPhone app developer out there, Skype has just updated their iPhone app to iOS 4 standards adding support for multitasking. With Skype running in the background, you can now receive Skype calls and instant messages even while you’re something else on your iOS 4 flavored iPhone 3G S, or better yet, on your iPhone 4 . If someone’s calling you through Skype and your phone is locked, simply slide to unlock the display to receive the call, and as for the extra charge for 3G VoIP calling that we mentioned a while back, they’ve decided to can this all together and provide this service for free (carrier data charges will still apply though). Unlike Fring , however, this latest version of Skype for the iPhone still doesn’t come with video calling support. To download Skype 2.0.1 for the iPhone, just click here to be redirected accordingly to the iTunes App Store

Ultraviolet could signal the great convergence

I’ve heard that there may be a great convergence, where we would purchase a movie, and be able to watch it from any platform like our television, mobile phone, or PMP. This could happen if Ultraviolet has their way. Right now, Ultraviolet has several members like NBC Universal, for example. However, I don’t think that Apple and iTunes will play nice with it. Especially with the Hulu iPad service and Hulu Plus

House passes Cellphone Contraband Act of 2010, prisoners go back to writing letters

Oh, we know all about doin’ time. We watched both Oz and The Wire in their entirety, and have seen Let’s Go To Prison , like, eight times. For instance, we know that you only do two days in the joint: the day you go in, and the day you go out. And we know that tattoo guns are readily available (if you have access to an old walkman or Playstation ).We also know that cellphones are contraband, and rightfully so: you wouldn’t want an inmate ordering a hit on someone, or running their record label from in “the stir.” That’s why we stand with the CTIA in support of S.1749, or The Cell Phone Contraband Act of 2010. Approved in April by the Senate, and passed by the house yesterday, this amendment to title 18 of the United States Code prohibits “possession or use of cellphones and similar wireless devices by Federal prisoners.” And once it’s signed into law by the President, we’re sure that the no-goodniks will stop sneaking handsets in and we can forget all that silly talk of prison cellphone jamming once and for all

Apple: 8.4 million iPhone units sold in Q3, up 61% YoY

Apple has just posted their sales figures for Q3 2010 (which ended last June 26), and it’s proof that the iPhone is still a very profitable device for the company. 8.4 million iPhone units were sold during that period which grew by a remarkable 61% YoY. It’s availability in more markets such as China may have something to do with this, but this feat is still impressive nonetheless especially considering that its competition has definitely grown over the past few months. Needless to say, Q3 is another fruitful quarter in the books for Apple and the iPhone
