Live picture of the Motorola Calgary (Droid Devour) surfaces
To be honest, we had already given up on the Motorola Calgary considering that 2009 came and gone without us even catching a glimpse of it live in the flesh. This new year, however, is a different story as BGR has managed to get an exclusive sneak peek at it, and judging from the way it looks is primed and ready to hit the scene this 2010. The Calgary was initially rumored to be the first Android handset from Motorola . Unfortunately, it never came to be.

Mobile FireFox Fennec RC1 now Available for Nokia N900
After more than a year of confirming that a mobile version of FireFox is forthcoming, Mozilla’s starting off 2010 on a good note by announcing that FireFox Mobile (codenamed as Fennec ) is now finally out of alpha and beta stage and is ready for download. Unfortunately, it’s only compatible with the Maemo-powered Nokia N900 phone and it’s still just an RC1 version, but hey, at least it’s now one step closer to reaching its final release version.

Question: Your best Nokia moment?
At the end 2009 both Steve Litchfield and James Whatley published their thoughts on the best Symbian device of the last decade and the best phone of 2009 respectively. Both posts have caused quite a stir, evoking much conversation. This got me thinking. What was my favourite Nokia moment of the last decade? Honestly, I could list about 20 moments of pure future shock, where my smartphone seemed almost impossibly capable

Engadget Disses The BlackBerry On “10 Gadgets That Defined The Decade” List
So, I was just taking a look Engadget’s 10 Gadgets That Defined The Decade and I have simply got to call foul. In some type of complete travesty of justice, the Palm Treo makes the list, yet, the BlackBerry only gets an honorable mention. I just have four words… Are you frigging kidding!?! The BlackBerry is the primary reason (horrendous management is a close second) for the demise of the Treo and Palm in general and I dare say that no other gadget, less the cell phone and laptop have had a bigger impact on business this decade than has the BlackBerry

Kaiser Permanente Teams With mobileStorm For SMS Reminders, Sees 30% Cost Savings
Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest not-for-profit health plan, has teamed with mobileStorm , a digital marketing company with a decade of experience under its belt, to launch an innovative SMS-based patient reminder solution . Like most organizations, Kaiser was faced with the problem of needing to cut costs, and decided to target the most cost-sensitive areas of their business- patient communication. The healthcare giant chose mobileStorm’s mobile marketing platform to provide efficient and cost-effective paperless reminders to its subscribed customer base, while continually allowing customers to opt-out or into the appointment reminder database. To meet Kaiser’s goals for patient communication, mobileStorm developed an end-user SMS platform solution that allowed for the creation and managment of general appointment reminders, such as scheduled office visits, specific treatment reminders, such as mammograms, and even specific notification of completed lab results, such as a text saying “your lab results are ready.” Beginning October 1st, 2008 mobileStorm began a one month pilot program with Kaiser to prove it’s effectiveness. Taking 87,950 cell phone numbers from Kaiser’s patient database, mobileStorm first launched a carrier query, or number verification, to verify that all numbers were valid cell phone numbers

Mignon Clyburn, member of the Federal Communications Commission member responded to Verizon Wireless’ 77-page reply to government queries concerning its US$350 early termination fee for “advanced devices.” Clyburn, added to the FCC earlier this year by President Obama, called Verizon’s response “unsatisfying and, in some cases, troubling.” Commissioner Clyburn said in the proclamation that she

China Unicom on Chinese handset platforms
Whether you like it or not: China is a huge market for cell phones. Unfortunately, getting statistics on the market is somewhat difficult – which is why having China Mobile talk on 3G handset sales is especially interesting. Marbridge Daily claims the following distribution: … 8% of procured handsets run Windows Mobile, 16% use the Symbian mobile OS, and 4% use Apple’s iPhone OS, while the rest operate either BREW or the manufacturer’s self-owned OS. … So much for the death of Symbian and the dominance of iPhone / BlackBerry… Image: Wikimedia commons / Edzhgz

N900: Day 1. A New Hope?
As I mentioned back in August, I’m of the opinion that the N900 is the most important Nokia device since the 7650. The smartphone was a pleasant way of getting a limited computing experience in the palm of my hand, but I wanted more and so I chose the iPhone as my main device. Does the N900 have what it takes to win me back over to the Nokia fold full time? Over the next couple of weeks I intend to ‘experience’ every aspect of the N900. This review is going to be a little different from the others I’ve posted here over the years.
