Yesterday, Verizon Communications, Inc. reported a Q4 loss of $653 million, despite a strong showing from its wireless division. Verizon Wireless has the most retail customers of any U.S. carrier, and added 2.2 million new lines during Q4 — almost all of which were post-paid customers — bringing their total customer base to 91.4 million. Losses are being credited to a shrinking land-line customer base, as users move exclusively to cell phones, which was down 3.9% in Q4

Sharp, the biggest (in terms of market share) of all eight major Japanese cell phone makers, has been talking about internationalizing its phone business for quite some time now. It makes sense, as the domestic market is shrinking and as Sharp only sold 20% of all their cell phones outside Japan (1.6 million units) last fiscal. The company is specifically planning [press release in English] to export one of their cell phones powered by solar energy to China.

You are lucky if you are living in the States, because HTC has finally rolled out the HTC Touch HD2 via T-Mobile USA with an internal memory boost. The T-Mobile version has a 1GB ROM and a 576MB RAM, which means that you can install more applications or store more data on it. What’s more, the HTC Touch HD2 is also sold with a 16GB microSD card. Google Jan. 26 rolled out a Web-based version of its popular Google Voice application for Apple’s iPhone several months after Apple rejected Google’s original submission to its App Store. The app will let Google Voice users do pretty much what they can do with the desktop version of the app, including listen to voice mail and read voice mail transcripts, send and receive text messages, and make inexpensive international calls. Make your own zipper pulls, earrings, nose rings, key chain fobs, dog collar fobs, cell phone fobs, wine glass fobs, e-reader fob, blah blah blah. The technique involves the “Shrinky Dink” shrinkable plastic from waaaay back in the day, when you trace… out a picture on the shrinkable plastic with permanent markers (which were hard to find back then, too), bake in the oven (burn your fingers), and out comes a miniaturized hard-plastic alter id of the original. Not overly useful for kids, but for geeks? Holy bunny rabbit, the possibilities are endless.

Gotta love those analysts, as they’re always good for stirring the rumor mill – this time it’s BusinessWeek reporting claims that Apple will likely be ending it’s exclusive relationship with AT&T in order to bring the iPhone to all major US carriers. According to Tim Horan, telecommunications analyst at Oppenheimer & Co., T-Mobile USA should have the iPhone available this summer (whatever the follow-up to the iPhone 3GS turns out to be,) with Verizon and Sprint getting the goods this fall. Even Clearwire will be able to get in on the action, as they are expected to get the iPhone sometime in 2011. Of course, AT&T has been the exclusive carrier of the iPhone since it launched in June 2007. Of course, Apple has the perfect opportunity to announce changes like this if they’d like, as they’ve got what many are predicting to be a colossal Apple event on January 27th , just two days from now

Sony Ericsson has released their Q4 and 2009 full year report, and while the figures are still a far cry from what they used to be back in their glory days, at least they’ve managed to consistently improve on their performance on a quarterly basis. 14.6 million units were shipped in the last quarter which is a step up from the 14.1 million phones sold in Q3 . As a result, gross margin rose to 23% from a low of 16% in the previous quarter. Sony Ericsson’s loss for Q4 2009 was also down to just €40 million as compared to Q3’s €198. Given that 2009 wasn’t exactly a banner year for the industry as a whole, it doesn’t come as a surprise that their full year report fails in comparison to their 2008 achievements
