What Will RIM Do About Memory Problems On The BlackBerry?
As many of you may already know, memory has been a point of contention for BlackBerry users for quite some time. To get straight to the point, there simply isn’t enough of it . Sure, the newest devices have 16 gig media cards and 2 gigs of internal memory, but, you really only have 256 MB of application space. Once you factor in the OS you are probably only talking about a 100 MB or so from which to install and run applications and if you don’t have a BlackBerry Storm2 or better, the problem is dramatically worse.

It’s no secret that the BlackBerry Curve 8530 is heading to Verizon, and now rumors have arrived that some Verizon stores have started to receive their accessories for the new Curve. It’s expected that Verizon will officially put the Curve 8530 on sale November 20th, therefore it only makes sense that accessories are starting to flow into stores now. Adam Nash, Vice President, Search & Platform Products at LinkedIn, announced yesterday at the BlackBerry Developer’s Conference that LinkedIn for BlackBerry is coming soon. Why it has taken the popular business social media and networking site so long to come out with a LinkedIn for BlackBerry mobile app is beyond me, however, better late than never definitely applies to what I think is going to a hugely popular BlackBerry application. We’ve worked hard to develop an application that takes advantage of the unique capabilities of the BlackBerry platform. LinkedIn for BlackBerry will also include deep integration with the native Messages, Contacts & Calendar applications on the BlackBerry platform. An exact release date for LinkedIn for BlackBerry is still not clear but it is expected that it will be released before the end of the year. I personally can’t wait for this one. Location-based social network Loopt adds new features
Last week, the people from Loopt, the location-based social network, offered to send me some embargoed information. I ignored the email. It’s nothing against them specifically — I’ve just found location-based social networks to be a bit creepy. But then, after reading the information on CrackBerry , I realized that I was being a bit selfish. Just because I don’t prefer something doesn’t mean that the BBGeeks out there feel the same.
OpenGL Brings The Hope Of Games That Don’t Suck To The BlackBerry
Some of the biggest news coming out of the first day of the BlackBerry Developer’s Conference was the announcement of OpenGL ES support on the BlackBerry. OpenGL will bring 3-D graphics and the promise of 3-D Games. Let’s hope that RIM also plans to announce support for application execution from removable memory because 3-D graphics will greatly increase the size of applications. Looks like Research in Motion has changed the name of the latest version of Plazmic Content Developers Kit to BlackBerry Theme Studio 5.0 and is now available for download. The new name is much more fitting than the last. Unless you were a BlackBerry theme developer chances were you had no idea what Pazmic CDK was. BlackBerry Theme Studio, on the other hand, is not ambiguous at all. BlackBerry Theme Studio 5.0 is a now available and you can get it free on BlackBerry Developer Zone
Hello Blackberry Curve…Goodbye HTC Diamond Touch Pro
Well my son’s sorry HTC Diamond Touch smartphone was finally laid to rest a few weeks ago. As much as we tried to make this phone work for my son we just couldn’t do it. He is a heavy internet user and also sends and receives quite a few text messages each day. The battery just wasn’t holding up on this phone. No matter what we tried it just wasn’t performing
T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700 Available To Business Customers
Luis Merlos from BerryReivew.com has confirmed today that T-Mobile is now selling the BlackBerry Bold 9700 to business customers. I called Tmobile today & several representatives confirmed that Business customers can order the new Bold 9700 today. They did not say when regular customers can get it. As usual business customers get the new devices a couple of weeks earlier so I would expect consumers to be able to get theirs around mid November or towards the end of the month. Introducing RobLock v3.0 by Vapssky for Verizon US!
RobLock by Xim Technologies, LLC, has released it’s next version, and it’s only available to Verizon US handsets. I’ve done a review on RobLock before , as it’s a security app that is reasonably priced and keeps your BlackBerry safe. It is theft recovery software complete with data backup solution. Now here’s what the absolute 2.0 features: GPS and cell based device tracking, using Google Maps; the ability to communicate with your lost or stolen phone by SMS, email, or web interface; be alerted by sms or email if the SIM card is changed; the ability to recover your contacts from a lost phone; remote wipe the ENTIRE device AND media card; remote lock and alarm; remote call back; remote popup text messages; does not require BIS/BES for complete wipe
Well maybe its not really in the wild, but its in Canada! A couple new photos of the “unreleased” highly secret BlackBerry Storm 9550 for TELUS have leaked. The photos show the CDMA model 9550, sporting EVDO and Wi-Fi, not HSPA like some were hoping. Still no word on when this device is launching, but if you head to nearly any TELUS store you will notice the Storm2 ads inside. We can only assume it will be launching within the next few weeks (maybe November 24th?). Anyway so final confirmation says TELUS will be launching the 9550, not 9520, and it will be running OS 5.0.0.320
Bold 2, Storm 2, Curve 2. We’ve talked about them a lot on the BBGeekcast lately, and now we’re starting to see them up close. The Storm 2 is already out, and the Bold 2 drops very soon. Next up, the Curve 2, which is our main topic of conversation this week
Looks like our pals down under in Aussie land will have to wait a little while for the new BlackBerry Bold 9700 smartphone as a report over on computer world says the BlackBerry Bold 9700 won’t be hitting Australia until late November. Although the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is somewhat seen as a replacement for the BlackBerry Bold 9000, it is more of a companion as Research In Motion managing director, Adele Beachley has said “We are not trying to replace the 9000 — it is still selling well. We are providing a choice in the market.” Quick spec reminder…6.2cm light-sensing display, full QWERTY keyboard, touch sensitive trackpad, 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3.5mm jack, and microSD expansion.
If you’re one of the early adopters of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 , chances are you already have 5.0.0.321 or 5.0.0.330. However, heading into the weekend there’s been a new OS leak for the Bold 9700 , bringing the OS to 5.0.0.344. Keep in mind this is an unofficial release, so be sure to backup your device and take all necessary precautions before you install. If you’re hesitant, hold off… I have a feeling we’ll see this build hit us in a more official capacity in the near future anyways. iPhone vs. BB Survey Draws Some Interesting Conclusions
A recent survey released by Retrevo (an electronics shopping site) comparing iPhone and Blackberry users paints an interesting picture . The respondents are 445 iPhone and BlackBerry owners distributed across gender, age, income, and location in the US. Highlights include: 35 percent of iPhone users would be turned off by a date with outdated gadgets. iPhone owners use their phones more – they claim to consume more adult content, videos, news, and sports scores. iPhone owners text more often than BlackBerry users.
Telus Black’s Photo now listing BlackBerry Storm 2 9550
Black’s Photo is owned by Telus and it now shows that they are listing the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550, they also list a few other phones which we have listed below. There has been no announcement of the carriers in Canada for the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 as of yet and that include TELUS, but what we do know is thanks to Cellphones etc is that it will be coming. This phone has the improved Piezo-based touchscreen and it also has WiFi. Just so you know the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 is not compatible with their new HSPA network, it only comes with EVDO Rev. Other phones listed on Black’s Photo include: HTC Hero, BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Storm2 9550, BlackBerry Tour 9630, BlackBerry Curve 8330, BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230, Nokia E71, LG Versa 9600, LG Masterpiece 7100, LG 5500, LG Keybo2, Motorola Rival A455, Samsung Intensity U450, Motorola VE465, LG 5500 and Samsung Intensity U450.
BlackBerry Shipments Grew 400% Faster Than The iPhone In Q3
According to an IDG report, year over year shipment growth for the BlackBerry grew by 35.7% . In Q3 ‘08, 14.6% of smartphones sold worldwide were BlackBerrys. In Q3 ‘09, 19% of smartphones sold were BlackBerrys. In contrast, iPhone shipments grew by only 7.1%. Now, don’t get me wrong… 7.1% growth in this economy is pretty darn good. It’s 400%, or, 5 times less than what the BlackBerry did, but, still pretty good none the less.
Video: How To Remove the BlackBerry Bold 9700 Battery Cover
If you are anything like me, you struggle with the removal of a mobile phone battery cover; I have found some phones to be decidedly difficult when attempting to remove the battery cover. However, it appears that the removal of the battery cover on the new BlackBerry Bold 9700 is a piece of cake as shown in the video which can be viewed below courtesy of the guys over at Crackberry . Apparently all that is needed is to apply the correct pressure in the correct place, so now all we need is a battery cover removal video for just about every mobile handset and my problems will be sorted.
Apart from announcing the HTC Droid Eris and launching the LG Chocolate Touch , Verizon has also announced the BlackBerry Curve 8530 and Samsung Convoy today.
