RIM Announces BlackBerry Distribution Deal In Mainland China

BEIJING ( Reuters ) – Digital China, a Hong Kong-listed information technology company, is to distribute Research In Motion’s Blackberry handsets, accelerating RIM’s effort to expand into mainland China. The agreement will “help RIM further expand its business in China” by giving it access to Digital China’s national distribution network, the two companies said on Monday. The Blackberry phone and email device is still a relatively uncommon sight in China, in spite of being available for several years.

Mini E-Mail By MMMOOO For BlackBerry

I brought you the review of Mini SMS by MMMOOO which gives you a shortcut to texting those on your priority texting list, now I bring to you the Mini E-Mail app by MMMOOO . I use email more so than texting, so let’s look at this app and what it can do for you. Mini Email works the same as mini SMS, you install it to your desktop, extract the files, and you load the app through the App Loader in BlackBerry Desktop Manager. The icon is a little yellow envelope, and you choose your shortcuts from your contact with two initials so when you open the app, click the two initials, the email comes up to that person ready for you to compose. It’s simple, quick, and easy.

BlackBerry Web Plug-Ins For Eclipse and Visual Studio Now Available

BlackBerry Web Plugin version 2.0 Beta 1 has been released for both Eclipse and Microsoft Visual Studio. The BIG news for this release is the new support for building BlackBerry® Widget projects.  These tools will allow you to create BlackBerry Widgets in a much more automated manner compared to calling the BlackBerry Widget SDK via the command line. We have also added a getting started page that will appear when you start using the tooling that will connect you with the right online resources, forums and content to speed your widget development. To make a long story short BlackBerry development should become much easier as the new Web Plugins make easier to create, debug and package up browser-based content and BlackBerry Widgets for the BlackBerry smartphone

Smartphone Capabilities that don’t Require Smarts!

When mobile devices first started really taking advantage of digital technology, those who immediately jumped on the bandwagon were often flummoxed to discover that enjoying things like email, calenders and contact lists was hardly a cut-and-dry situation. For a long time, the vast majority of ordinary mobile device users had to rely heavily on IT personnel and “techies” to set up and manage their devices’ various capabilities. If you were one of the early users of such devices, then you’re probably still a bit gun shy about plunging ahead with configuring and syncing your iPhone , Blackberry or other mobile device. Today, however, Mobile Email via Hosted Exchange has changed all of that. Untether Yourself From IT Support If you haven’t investigated or looked into the streamlined and efficient capabilities of today’s mobile devices like Palm , Android and other top models when used with  Hosted Exchange , then you’re in for a real treat.

HipLogic Brings Smartphone Tech To Simple, Mass Market Feature Phones

There’s a lot of opportunities in regards to mobile marketing these days, but many new-age methods rely on the hope that most of the target audience is equipped with smartphones.  Unfortunately, as most marketers know, that’s simply not a reality. HipLogic, a unique startup previously known as Numobiq, has the simple intention of bringing smartphone-like features and capabilities to simple feature phones, or mass market devices.  Put simply, the company’s platform is designed to bring sophisticated applications to the simplest cell phones by keeping all the complexity in the network.  In theory, HipLogic wants to bring the quick, easy interface of the iPhone, Android and Blackberry to more simple-in-nature and lightweight phones that are available for the mass market. By keeping the heavy-lifting in the background, HipLogic’s platform allows users to toggle on a more iPhone-like interface that can bring with it more smartphone-like content such as real-time data, social networking and apps.  It’s all accomplished via a free mobile app that connects the device to HipLogic’s behind-the-scenes technology that incorporates a lightweight JavaScript virtual machine connected to the cloud.  That virtual machine can then aggregate information from network operators and the Web to create mash-ups on the device

Review: Powermat Wireless Charging Mat for BlackBerry

When the Palm Pre first launched, one of the coolest features was the ability to wirelessly charge the device by setting it on the TouchStone dock. Well a new product called Powermat is here to do the same thing for nearly all mobile devices. The Powermat is a wireless charging solution designed for a range of devices, including BlackBerry, iPhone, iPod, Nintendo, etc. So the first question you’re probably wondering is how does this thing wirelessly charge my device?

UberTwitter Beta 6 Officially Avaialable For Download

A pre-release version of UberTwitter Beta 6 has been officially released and is now available for download. Some of you may have already heard about the leaked pre-release of UberTwitter Beta 6 that hit the web yesterday.  Well, here is what UberTwitter has to say about that… We have been working very hard to provide you with a ‘knock-out’ release for Beta-6. Unfortunately, the first pre-release of this version was shared widely beyond our group of testers, and to compound this, they didn’t properly post the correct BlackBerry OS builds. We recognize that many of our users unfortunately downloaded this version, most with the wrong OS build.

Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 Now Available For Download

Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 is now available for download.  It is working just fine for me on my BlackBerry Storm 9530, however, we are hearing reports that there are issues with Beta 2 on non-touchscreen devices.  If you decide to try it out and you aren’t using a Storm or Storm2, let us know how you fair. Since it is working for me, I will just say that it is mind boggling that a third party web browser can be so much better in so many ways than the native BlackBerry Browser.  RIM’s WebKit based browser currently under development can’t get here soon enough and if it isn’t, at the very least, on par with what you get in Android,  Palm’s Web OS, or, dare I even say, Mobile Safari on the iPhone, it will be a very, very, long year for RIM. T-Mobile Complete: Is A $300 Contract-Free BlackBerry Curve Too Expensive?

I just happened to be in a Wal-Mart the other day, and, as I walked by the cell phone area, casually asked one of the folks working there how the BlackBerry devices were doing.  The young lady told me that they were flying off the shelves, especially the new T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve (8520).  I asked if they  offered the pre-paid ( T-Mobile Complete ) version as well and she said yes, but, that she couldn’t remember selling any as most people thought that $300 was way too expensive. I know that this conversation is completely subjective and based just the thoughts and opinion of one Wal-Mart associate, so, I pose the question to you… Is the T-Mobile Complete BlackBerry Curve 8520 too expensive? Review: AddOnIs v1.3.0 By Twinkler Software, LLC.

There’s a few apps out there that seem to compliment the BlackBerry OS, as though they are the missing piece of the puzzle, the “mini Me” that complete the OS making it as close to perfect as it can be. This is one of those apps. With The Mobile Heist today, I thought this would be a great time to review AddOnIs by Twinkler Software and let you know what I think of it. This app is really interesting. It normally sells for $9.95 in the BlackBerry Sync Store, but for one day only you can grab it for $4.97.

Editorial: What About Us?

I’ve got a question.  How many of you have had the opportunity to try out the new BlackBerry Bold 9700, regardless of the carrier?  Pretty cool device, don’t you think?  I mean with WiFi, HSPA, new optical trackpad, even the battery life has improved quite a bit.  So all in all, seems like the perfect BlackBerry, right? Well, not exactly. While I do feel that the Bold is probably one of the best BlackBerry devices ever due to all that’s mentioned above, it is my opinion (and I’m sure I’m not alone) that the Bold, along with other newer devices, is way too small.  It seems to me that RIM isn’t considering the fact that not everyone has tiny hands.  I’ve got pretty large hands, and have a hard time using it.  That’s why I haven’t purchased one, and will not.   I have service with Telus here in Canada, and now that we have the new HSPA network, it seems to me that my only viable option is to get a Bold 9000 and unlock it if I want the HSPA speeds on my BlackBerry.  Smartphones are small to begin with, and this doesn’t help.  I find it very hard to type on and make frequent spelling mistakes when I tried writing a long message on it.  If RIM would have made it just a bit bigger, then I think it would be perfect. Now this is not to say there shouldn’t be smaller form factor BlackBerrys, because I know a lot of people who find some other ones too big and don’t want a Pearl due to the SureType keyboard.  So that’s all fine.  Then there are those who want the smallest phones possible, so the SureType works for that crowd.  So what about us?  I think RIM should come up with 3 major lines of device… SureType style – Keep the Pearl line the way it is so those who want a small device with BlackBerry features can have the best of both worlds. Curve/Tour/Javelin/Bold 9700 style – Those who want the full QWERTY keyboard without the bulky device Bold 9000 style – Make some bigger phones with a bigger keyboard so I don’t feel like Shaq trying to use an iPod Nano.
