New BlackBerries (Magnum? Pearl 9100?) and software upgrades coming from RIM this spring

RIM is reportedly getting ready to launch two new BlackBerry smartphones this spring (the North American / European spring). According to The Street , one of the devices might resemble the BlackBerry Bold, but come with a “long-awaited, touch-enabled Web-friendly operating system” (thus a touchscreen), as well as with a full QWERTY keyboard.

It’s a good sign that OS 5.0 is starting to move across carrier’s in North America. Yesterday both Sasktel and TELUS released OS 5.0.0.419 for the BlackBerry Tour 9630. Follow the links below to download this OS, and remember your Tour 9630 doesn’t have to be from either of these carriers. Simply install the file and remove the vendor.xml file ( more details here ).

JAGTAG 2D Mobile Barcode Technology Live On All 5 Major U.S. Carriers

It seems like 2D barcode technology, mobile tags, as they are commonly referred to, are on the come up here in the United States.  Just the other day we talked about Microsoft Tag .  Today we’ll talk about JAGTAG, who, just announced that their technology is now available on all 5 major carriers in the U.S.  This covers 87% of  users. JAGTAG works a little differently than what we BlackBerry users and smartphone users are used to.  There is no application to install.  Simply take a picture of the JAGTAG and text it to or send it as an email.  It is a bit tedious compared to just snapping a pic on your BlackBerry and being automatically taken to a mobile mobile website.  All the more reason to make your next mobile phone a BlackBerry. BGR explains why 3G BlackBerry Bands are not Hardware dependent, rather Software.

Yesterday we reported about the possibility of a AWS-capable BlackBerry Pearl 9100 heading to networks like T-Mobile and Wind Mobile. At first it was thought to be a separate model of the Pearl 9100 designed only to work on these networks, but Boy Genius has decided to set everyone straight. Apparently all newer 3G BlackBerry smartphones such as the Bold 9700 and the upcoming Pearl 9100 are one single model, and not designed separately for North American or European markets. This means that the Bold 9700 that lets say AT&T or Rogers carries is the exact same as the one that T-Mobile or Wind Mobile carries

BlackBerry OS 5.2 to launch later this year, followed by OS 6.0 next year

With the launch of Android, WebOS, and of course the iPhone, the current BlackBerry OS is starting to feel a little obsolete.  It’s only a matter of time before RIM’s starts working on a refresh, and with any luck at all OS 6.0 will bring that. Boy Genius is reporting about a tip he received saying RIM plans to release OS 6.0 sometime next year, and that RIM is working on OS 5.2 for a release later this year. Considering it took so long to release OS 5.0 I’m not setting any high expectations of seeing this anytime soon. But let’s all hope RIM’s OS 6.0 really kicks ass. You’re reading a story which originated at BlackBerrySync.com , Where you find BlackBerry News You Can Sync With…

Check Out The Facebook BlackBerry Wallpaper Generator

I don’t know how long the Facebook BlackBerry Wallpaper Generator has been around, but, it appears to be a Facebook app officially created by Research in Motion, and, I have to admit, is kind of cool. The BlackBerry Wallpaper Generator does exactly what its name implies.  It allows you quickly and easily create BlackBerry wallpapers.  You can use the built-in wallpapers included in the app, or, pull images directly from your facebook gallerys, which, to me, is the beauty of the application. The BlackBerry Wallpaper Generator is a free Facebook Application.  You can access it via your PC by visiting http://apps.facebook.com/blackberrywallpaper/ . BGR Breaks It Down: Why a BlackBerry’s 3G bands are no longer relevant

It seems that every BlackBerry-lover on the Internets is making a big deal over this AWS spectrum-equipped BlackBerry 9100 , and while it’s great to have confirmation that the unit is hitting T-Mobile (and maybe even visiting our Canadian friends at WIND, too), all in all, it doesn’t really mean much. Here’s why: Enter the BlackBerry 9700

Opera Mini Mobile Web Broswer Launching In BlackBerry App World

Word on the street is Opera Mini, personally my favorite third party mobile web browser for BlackBerry, especially the BlackBerry Storm and Storm2, will launch in BlackBerry App World this quarter. “I was on the phone with Philip Gronvold, US Manager of Business Development at Opera Software recently, and he told me Opera Mini will be available in App World during this quarter. Apparently, the news is already public and was casually slipped into a press release somewhere, but I can’t find it from Google “, says Kyle McInnes from Blackberry Cool .. BlackBerry Pearl 9100 coming to T-Mobile USA, Wind Canada?

RIM’s unannounced BlackBerry Pearl 9100 has been spotted in some new photos which indicate that the smartphone might be launched by T-Mobile in the US, or by Wind in Canada. As seen in the images below, the Pearl 9100 supports WCDMA bands I, IV and VIII – meaning 2100MHz, 1700MHz (AWS) and 900MHz. Since T-Mobile and Wind are the only North American carriers that use the 1700MHz spectrum, they’re almost certainly among the ones to offer the 9100.

BlackBerry OS 6.0 In The Works… We’ve Got So Many Questions

According to a solid BGR contact , BlackBerry OS 6.0 is in the works.  Additionally, BlackBerry OS 5.2 is going to be released this year. We’ve got so many questions…  The biggest being will OS 6.0 be out this year as well and is 5.2 just a bridge to allow users to upgrade to 6.0? We know that a WebKit BlackBerry Browser is coming.  New CDMA BlackBerry devices already support 3D graphics.  Will OS 5.2 address memory allocation?  Will RIM make it easier on developers by releasing development tools on par with those available for WebOS, Android, and the iPhone.  Will 5.2 be the last platform for older devices?  Will 6.0 only work on new devices? The list of questions is almost endless… BlackBerry OS 6.0 In The Works… We’ve Got So Many Questions is a post from: RIMarkable

BlackBerry OS 6.0 in the works…

One of our most-solid BlackBerry connects has just dropped word that internally, RIM is starting to work on OS 6.0. We can’t reveal details about the OS at this time, but in addition to molding what is OS 6.0, we also know that RIM is working on OS 5.2 which should debut sometime this year. Logical upgrade paths? Definitely. Let’s hope it won’t just be more evolutionary RIM madness, though.

BlackBerry Pearl 9100 Caught with T-Mobile/WIND 3G Bands?

The original BlackBerry Pearl series was a crazy popular device, and there is no doubt in my mind that RIM’s upcoming Pearl 9100 will be the same. New rumors are flying around that RIM will release a variant of the Pearl 9100 with 1700MHz 3G bands that would work on T-Mobile in the United States, and Wind Mobile in Canada. Both carriers use different 3G bands than carriers like AT&T, Rogers, TELUS and Bell.

Microsoft Tag: Basically QR Code Type Mobile Tags, But, All Microsoftish

Many BlackBerry users, especially those using BlackBerry Messenger 5 , are already familiar with Mobile Tags, or, QR Codes, as they are properly referred to.  QR codes are a type of  2D barcode that can be scanned by most smartphones and even many feature phones allowing the user to access a website , contact information, product information, pretty much anything.  QR Codes are widely popular in Japan, and, pretty much has become a global standard. Microsoft has never let global standardization get in the way of “progress”, so, they have introduced their own Mobile Tag technology called Microsoft Tag
