AMD ATI Radeon HD 5450: DirectX 11 for HTPCs, not gamers

AMD have outed their latest video card, the ATI Radeon HD 5450, and while it’s packing DirectX 11 support it’s not really intended for the gamers.  Instead the fanless half-height card offers DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA connections, support for Eyefinity multi-monitor output and more for just $50. That means support for up to three displays simultaneously, as well as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstreaming.  In fact the HD 5450 seems almost tailor-made for an HTPC setup, even down to the frugal 20W power requirements. Over at Tom’s Hardware they’ve been putting the HD 5450 through its paces and, as expected, it’s “the least awe-inspiring Radeon HD 5000-series card”.

Video: Nexus One Multitouch vs. iPhone 3GS Multitouch

Now that Google has relented over multitouch on the US version of the Nexus One we are seeing a few video demonstrations hit the next waves and today we have one such video from the guys over at intomobile . In this one we have Will Park taking a look at the Nexus One pinch to zoom and apposed to the iPhone 3GS pinch to zoom feature in a sort of multitouch comparison, and Will says now the Nexus One just might take over the iPhone throne. Although multitouch on the Nexus One only works at the moment in the browser, image gallery and Google Maps apps while the iPhone 3GS multitouch works in numerous applications, so my guess even thought the Nexus One now has multitouch it still won’t grab that throne

JooJoo tablet shipping this month, full Flash support and app store at launch

The iPad may have taken the media by storm, but the JooJoo , formerly known as the CrunchPad, is back, and hot on Apple’s heels.  The JooJoo’s starting off full production, that’s right and maker Fusion Garage has announced that the product is set to start shipping this month. Fusion Garage CEO Chandra revealed that they’ve teamed up with Malaysia’s largest OEM, CSL Group, to cover the tablet manufacturing costs; in return CSL will get a slice of the revenue pie.  And read this, it’s confirmed that the tablet will feature full Flash support at launch, and even HD Flash content once Flash 10.1 is released. The other thing?  A web app store is in the works, Chandra claiming “We have a bigger ‘app store’ than Apple because we have the full Internet,”.  Apparently JooJoo means along the lines of “magical” in African – which is how Steve Jobs exactly described the iPad.  And they cost the same at $499 each.  The JooJoo may have a larger 12-inch screen compared to the iPad’s 9.7-incher, but who knows what Apple may concoct up – something larger, and even more “magical”? FUSION GARAGE MOVES INTO FULL PRODUCTION OF BREAKTHROUGH JOOJOO Tablet Innovative Manufacturing Agreement and Investment from CSL Group Helps Reinvent Consumer Electronics Business Model SINGAPORE, February 3, 2010 – Fusion Garage today announced that its category-creating JooJoo Internet tablet has moved into full production with initial shipments expected to reach consumers at the end of February. Helping fuel the JooJoo’s arrival and Fusion Garage’s next phase of corporate growth is an innovative manufacturing agreement and strategic investment from mobile device OEM and distribution giant CSL Group of Malaysia.

The update makes IM+ for Skype the only BlackBerry app that allows free Skype calls – even internationally

Apple gets a patent on smart screen bezels

Apple might have finally released the iPad , but the rumor mill is already on to prognosticating about the next rev — and as usual, Apple’s patents and patent applications are everyone’s favorite place to start. (And for good reason, really — that very first design patent we inititally noticed way back in 2004 is exactly what the iPad looks like, down to the bezel and Dock connector.) The latest tidbit is a patent granted earlier this week on an intelligent touch-sensitive bezel, which would essentially extend the touchpanel beyoned the edges of the screen to create an entire border of context-specific soft buttons — the iPod app might have playback controls at the bottom, while Safari could put the navigation bar down there and Pages could do formatting stuff at the top. It’s sort of interesting — Palm similarly extends the touch area beyond the screen on the Pre and the Pixi, but not quite like this — but we can’t see how touching the bezel next to an on-screen label is much better than just pressing the screen. Of course, there’s no guaranteeing Apple’s actually going to use any of this in any future products whatsoever, but we’re sure that won’t stop some analyst from waving their magic analyst wand and saying their “supply checks” have indicated a major ODM is already producing these.
