Apple TV – ‘The Hobby is a Hit’
If some early analyst research proves accurate, it looks like Apple may have yet another hit on its hands with Apple TV. Just a week after the new Apple TV went on sale, many of Apple’s retail stores around the U.S. are sold out of the set top box, with one Wall Street analyst predicting the device is on pace to sell a million per quarter. “The hobby is a hit,” analyst Alex Gauna with JMP Securities declared in a note to investors Wednesday.

Latest iPhone TV Ad Showcases Retina Display
I’ve seen the new iPhone TV ad a few times on YouTube and at techie sites, and last night I saw it on the living room screen as well. This latest ad is all about the iPhone 4′s retina display and how it takes the iPhone’s screen resolution to the next level, with the typical set of shining examples throughout the commercial. When I first saw the ad I thought it was a little out of character for an iPhone ad, almost aimed at a more ‘geek’ level viewer than at the smartphone-buying public in general

Sony announces 16 Megapixel Exmor R camera sensor for mobile phones
Sony promises to “dramatically improved photographic performance” with its latest Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS image sensors that will be integrated in two new lens modules made for mobile phones. One of the new sensors, called Sony Exmor R IMX081PQ, is capable of providing 16.41 Megapixel photos, adopting “the industry’s smallest 1 unit pixel size of 1.12 micrometers”. To elude issues that may appear when a unit pixel is that small, Sony has implemented “a unique formation of photo diodes optimally designed for fine pixel structure to realize a CMOS image sensor with high resolution, high sensitivity and low noise” – this should allow you to capture high quality images and videos even in unfavorable light settings. The Exmor R IMX081PQ 16MP sensor will ship for about $30 starting January next year – several months before another new Exmor R sensor (IMX105PQ, 8 Megapixels) should ship for only $18. The new Sony lens that will include the 16MP and 8MP Exmor R sensors are called IU081F and IU105F2.

WSJ gets less cheeky with Verizon iPhone article, now says it’s a done deal
Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal made headlines by writing: Apple Inc. plans to begin mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the smartphone early next year, said people briefed by Apple. While there is plenty of innuendo in that statement, the publication never actually stated that Verizon will be selling the iPhone. Today, the WSJ has un-muddied the proverbial waters and rewritten a portion of their previous article. The new article reads: AT&T Inc.

AT&T’s early upgrade smartphone program detailed. Spoiler: they made it $125 more expensive
Here is what we have just found out… AT&T recently modified their early upgrade program for smartphones, and due to smartphones becoming “increasingly more sophisticated” — and the cost of the devices increasing — AT&T has increased their $75 early upgrade fee to $200. That means a BlackBerry Bold 9700 that would have cost you $275 will now cost you $399. Quick messaging and basic phones are not subjected to the new change. AT&T told employees that, “This change to our exception pricing is necessary to maintain our ability to provide customers with the best selection of devices and maintain our leadership in the Smartphone category.” And hey, with Verizon charging a $350 ETF for advanced devices, it was only a matter of time before AT&T started exploring their options

Logitech N550 USB Speaker Cushion for Netbooks & Ultra-portable Notebooks
Notebooks give us the convenience of working (or even gaming) wherever we want, and some of us choose to work (or game) on a couch or bed. However, extended ‘deskless’ operation will likely cause neck and back pain, not to mention the increased risk of laptop-induced thigh burn. This is exactly why Philips and Logitech came out with the CushionSpeaker and N700 Lapdesk respectively. These two provide cushion between the heat from a laptop and your lap. Additionally, they double as a pair of integrated USB speakers to replace the ones on a laptop.

Review: Tilt to Live HD for iPad
If you’re not familiar with Tilt to Live on the iPhone, you may want to get out from under the smoking rubble of your ruined city (I am so sorry about that, by the way, I didn’t realize it was loaded) and get with the program. TtL ushered in a new genre of what I guess you could call the Passive Agressive Arena Shooter, in which you had to tilt your iPhone to avoid swarms of red dots while leading the same within range of a cornucopia of devious traps and weapons, all in the name of scoring points. It was one of the first games to really nail tilt controls from an overhead view, to the point that if you died, there was never any doubt in your mind that it was entirely your fault . Tilt to Live HD , just released today, is the brand new iPad version of the game, and if you were expecting exactly the same game with all of the sprites doubled in size, you’re in for a big surprise

Motorola says iPhone and iPad infringe some of its patents, sues Apple
Not long after being sued by Microsoft , Motorola has announced that it’s suing Apple for the same old reason most companies in the mobile industry are suing each other: patent infringement. Motorola (actually its Motorola Mobility subsidiary) claims that the “ iPhone , iPad, iTouch and certain Mac computers” infringe a total of 18 patents. Said patents are related to various technologies, including WCDMA (aka 3G), GPRS, Wi-Fi 802.11, wireless email, location-based services, software application management, proximity sensing, and multi-device synchronization. Moto says that these technologies are fraudulently used by Apple in “many of its core products and associated services”, including the famous App Store and MobileMe.
