Apple is world’s second largest company by market cap

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that Apple was in danger of going out of business yet now they are the world’s second largest company (in terms of market cap) and not too far away from snatching the No.1 position held by Exxon. Apple, maker of the Mac, the iPod, iPhone and iPad, surpassed Chinese oil giant PetroChina during trading on Thursday to become the world’s second-largest company in terms of market value. Apple shares hit a record 292.76 dollars during trading on Wall Street, giving the California gadget-maker a market capitalization of 266 billion dollars, more than PetroChina’s 265 billion dollars.

BlackBerry Playbook: The RIM tablet

Today RIM (Research in Motion) finally introduced the world to the BlackBerry Playbook. The Playbook is a 7-inch tablet that RIM hopes will be a healthy competitor to the Apple iPad , and runs its own custom version of the BlackBerry Tablet OS. The insides of this thing sound pretty good as well, and almost put the iPad to shame: a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, front and rear facing cameras that both support high definition, Flash 10.1 with hardware acceleration, HDMI out, USB, and HTML5 support. It’s got a widescreen 1024 x 600 display that supports multi-touch, and RIM was proud to announce that the Playbook will connect with BlackBerry enterprise servers right out of the box.

Apple updates Ping, still annoying and restrictive

Over the weekend, Apple released iTunes 10.0.1, which mainly adds a sidebar to the music library for interaction with their Ping social network . The change makes it easier to “like” and “post” music that’s in your iTunes library to Ping, without having to actually go into the Ping area of the store.

HP Slate – Fiction or Non Fiction?

We’ve seen some talk about the HP Slate coming back.  It was canned several months ago, but just recently we’ve started to hear about reviews and product spotted out in the wild.  Most recently is a blog post from Engadget [source for these images]: It’s well known the Slate was canceled back in March and I find it very unlikely the company would about-face yet again to re-launch the tablet PC. My theory is the guy posting video on the web, is a guy who got his hands on a prototype unit while it was in development.  The HP Slate most likely had hundreds if not thousands of prototypes made and clearly some of them have leaked into the public sector. The HP Slate shown in the video on Engadget’s site does show so interesting tips.  For example the processing time to switch between landscape and portrait.  We also like the SD and USB connectivity along with nice dock station for the tablet PC.  In our opinion, these to features alone, set it apart from the iPad product. Of course, we’ll leave it up to you to decide.
