iPad Month: Heroes for my Son, a Vook by Brad Meltzer
I spent a good hour and a half last night with just my son and my iPad. No, we weren’t playing Brothers in Arms, or even Zombie Smash (his personal favorite at the moment, being 11 which is an age when zombie slayer looms large in his future career choices). We were reading a Vook together

NTT Docomo’s LTE network pre-launch starts today
NTT Docomo, Japan’s largest mobile operator, announced that it has started to verify its 4G / LTE network in the Tokyo area, in preparation for the full-scale commercial launch planned for December this year. As of today, Docomo is testing the new network for “speed, latency, stability of inter-cell handover and other conditions required for commercial operation.” According to the Japanese carrier, LTE devices used in the pre-launch operation support data transfers of up to 100 Mbps downlink, and up to 50 Mbps uplink. However, real-life speeds are expected to go up to 75 Mbps downlink and 25 Mbps uplink. In the US, Verizon and MetroPCS are also planning to launch LTE networks by the end of 2010, with MetroPCS even hoping to introduce an LTE phone (Samsung r900) this year. Motorola Milestone XT720 Review
With all the hype around the iPhone 4 launch yesterday, it would have been easy to miss the confirmation of a new handset in the Motorola Android stable, the Motorola Milestone XT720 . And it would be a shame to ignore this handset, because it is a top end, high class smartphone with a fairly healthy spec list. Android has done a lot to help revive the flagging fortunes of Motorola, and with handsets like this one in the pipeline, those fortunes are set to keep on rising

Aluratek Drops a Brick (For Your iPhone, That Is)
When I think of a brick, I either think of the actual structural element from which buildings are constructed, or I think of any electronic device that seems unnecessarily large and cumbersome . Now, Aluratek wants us to reimagine the word as an audio component. Aluratek is releasing their latest product, the Brick Speaker Dock for iPhone/iPod this week. Aluratek boasts that the Brick offers high-quality sound at an affordable price. It will work with the iPod Touch, iPhone, and any iPod model with a click wheel. Sky Factory eScape Virtual Windows Provide Soothing, Yet Unrealistic, Views
By Andrew Liszewski We’re all familiar with the idea of slapping a hi-def LCD display on the wall in a portrait orientation and then playing back footage of the great outdoors to make it seem like a window with a fantastic view. So the eScape from Sky Factory doesn’t exactly break any new ground. They’ve basically taken the concept and refined it with a lovely 40-inch 1080P LCD and a stylish frame with shutters, that open inwards for some reason. And while I find the $9,750 asking price ridiculous, it’s the included video scenes that actually leave me shaking my head

Sony Ericsson Shakira leaked, Windows Phone 7 shows business chops, Metro PCs gets Android
A suitably blurry shot of a new Android handset has turned up online in a new leak. The device is white, rather smooth looking and though to be the Sony Ericsson Shakira handset. Windows Phone 7 has been showing off its business user chops to entice users to buy. Microsoft expects about 90% of those who buy their devices to use them for business

iPhone 4 UK Price – 16GB £169, 32GB £249?
We already know how much the new iPhone 4 will cost in the US, $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model, but this price doesn’t include taxes which are different for each state in the US. We have contacted all of the three mobile phone networks in the UK who will be selling the iPhone 4 in the UK, but none of them would give us any pricing details, so we decided to work out for ourselves how much the iPhone is likely to retail for in the UK. The 16GB iPhone 4 retails for $199 in the US, if we use todays exchange rate this works out at about £138, but this price doesn’t include taxes, so if you add on the VAT to that you are looking at around £162, so we suspect that the 16GB iPhone 4 will retail for around £169 on a contract with either O2, Orange or Vodafone

Palatov DP4 Takes Liberties With The Term ‘Go-Kart’
By Andrew Liszewski At some point as a kid I was misled into believing that go-karts, as fun as they are, were inferior miniature versions of cars. And once you reached the age when you were eligible for a drivers license, you could leave the world of go-karting behind. But looking at Dennis Palatov’s DP4 Super Go-Kart, I’m not so sure anymore

Apple releases Safari 5, quietly
Section: Web , Web Browsers Amidst the fury of WWDC 2010 Apple news , there is one thing Apple did do quietly today and that was the release of Safari 5. The latest version touts improved performance, more powerful developer tools and greater HTML5 support—more specifically a new full screen playback mode enabled video captions. A few more hard specs, Apple notes that thanks to a new cleverly name Nitro JavaScript engine, Safari 5 will run JavaScript 30 percent faster than Safari 4. We’ll wait for the benchmark tests to full stand behind those numbers

quadrotor drone would be a great circus performer. or relentless hunter.
The University of Pennsylvania’s autonomous quadrotor helicopter reminds me of a dog. It’s just waiting to be unleashed, to do tricks, to zip from one place to another. It can do backflips, even triple backflips, pass through narrow spaces without breaking a sweat, and can even be upgraded with Velcro.
