Some of the highlights: The Torque Case: The next generation of Case-mate’s Vroom iPhone 4 case has arrived. We took the original iPhone 4 Vroom tire tread concept and expanded upon the design to enhance its style, creating the new iPhone 4 Torque series

Nixie tubes + concrete block = cool clock

Check out Norwegian maker Hans Jørgen Grimstad’s concrete & nixie clock . (The video shows some sort of test, not the regular clock operation.) Hans’s website is in Norwegian, and Google Translate doesn’t savvy Norwegian very well, so its operation is somewhat mysterious. However, I do see that there’s an XBee involved. Hans, would you care to share some details?

HTC Intruder coming to AT&T, but what is it?

Here’s a fun little conundrum for you. A mysterious new Android handset from HTC  – the Intruder — has shown up in the internal inventory system at The Shack, and appears to be destined for life with AT&T. But what is it? Apparently there’s a good chance it’s the Liberty aka  Aria , a handset we know to contain HTC’s Sense UI, 3.5″ display and 5 megapixel camera. It’s listed as $700 full retail and $130 on a 2-year deal which seems to be a bit on the expensive side…but let’s be honest, people on AT&T who are dying for Android will pay just about anything for whatever they can get

Samsung Galaxy S US promo website goes live. Verizon launching the smartphone, too?

Not long after Samsung sent out Galaxy S promo boxes , the South Korean company has set up a webpage for the new smartphone on its US website – where it’s said that the handset is “coming this summer.” There’s still no official word regarding what carrier plans to sell the Galaxy S in the US, but we already know that T-Mobile (and maybe AT&T, too) will do it. Surprisingly, a user over at the Howard Forums is reporting that there’s also a CDMA Galaxy S in the making, which should be offered by Verizon. Since Verizon already has a high-end Android phone (the Droid Incredible), and it’s readying the launch of Motorola Shadow / Xtreme , this seems unlikely – but, well, you can never know. In case you don’t know yet, the Samsung Galaxy S runs Android 2.1 (upgradeable to 2.2 later this year) and features a 4 inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, Wi-Fi, GPS, Google Maps with free navigation, 5MP autofocus camera, HD video recording, VGA camera for video calling, 16GB of internal memory, and MicroSD card support. With a 2-yr contract agreement, the Galaxy S will likely cost as much as the iPhone 4 , namely $199.

Compound eyes for your robot

In this writeup, you can see how to build a cheap compound eye system for your robot .  Using 4 IR LEDs and 4 phototransistors, [oddbot] gave “Mr General” the ability to follow movement in objects fairly well, assuming that they are within 200 mm. Being IR, it has the typical drawbacks such as sensitivity to light or overly reflective surfaces, but we like the idea

NASA Astronauts Smuggled Artwork Onto The Moon

If we were to describe our culture to alien races, there’s a good chance we would spend a good deal of time showing them our culture’s artwork.  Apparently NASA astronauts held that same belief, when according to a new PBS documentary they smuggled miniaturized versions of various artwork onto the moon. The artwork was carried aboard Apollo 12 and was placed on a postage-stamp-sized chip. According to USA Today that art work includes pieces by Andy Warhol and five other artists: “For us, at the time, the moon landing was the most exciting thing that ever happened. The artists just wanted to be part of it,” says Myers, one of the six artists, including Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, David Novros and John Chamberlain, who made sketches.

Troubleshooting Username Issues

Most people would think that usernames are minor problems. But for the end user who has been working at a company for a long time and then suddenly they find their login does not work it can be a source of frustration that, if not fixed soon, can disrupt their workflow and diminish their productivity. So administrators should treat and end users login problems due to unrecognized usernames with degrees of priority that escalate upwards at an increasing rate the longer a user is unable to login to their email accounts. There are more than a couple scenarios that users can unknowingly lose their login privileges

Telus Price Increases: Caller Display, Call Forwarding, Five Favourite Numbers

Bringing themselves on par with Rogers, Telus has now increased the prices on a series of their services. This week, the company has increased pricing on the following standalone feature add-ons: Caller Display: $8.00/month (was $7) Call Forwarding: $3.00/month (was $2) Local Five Favorite Numbers (Talk/Text to five numbers): $15.00/month (was $10) Nationwide Five Favorite Numbers (Talk/Text to five numbers): $20.00/month (was $15) So why the change you ask? Well you could say because Rogers and Telus love playing tag with each other and when one company increases rates, the other follows. However, don’t you find it convenient with the new iPhone 4 coming out for Telus to increase prices? Lots of new customers coming, what a great way to make some extra revenue! (/sarcasm) Do note however that if you are an existing Telus customer and already have the previously listed features on your account, the price does not change for you.

The rest is here:

Beautiful overengineered tape dispenser

There’s a great thing that happens, every so often, when people have access to machine tools: They go a little bit nuts. They’re bumping along one day, doing what they do, and some mundane object crosses them for the last time. This or that particular doo-dad never works as well as it should, or breaks too easily, or gets misplaced once too often, and it occurs to them: Hey, I could fix that–and not just for myself, for today or for the next couple of weeks or months, but for the rest of my natural life and possibly those of my descendants for the foreseeable future of the species. And something like this solid 6061 aluminum Scotch tape dispenser from Henry Herndon is the result
