Crawling crochet earth

I should start considering more fiber enclosures for electronics, look how awesome this soft crawly earth robot is! However, creators Osamu Iwasaki and Hanakomet still call it RobotKnit, despite the fact that it is clearly crochet. After watching the video on repeat for the last fifteen minutes, I think I can forgive them. Inmarsat’s new phone trialed en route to June launch, definitely won’t be mistaken for a RAZR

Inmarsat’s new phone trialed en route to June launch, definitely won’t be mistaken for a RAZR If you live your life one oil rig, one Siberian gas field, or one Antarctic base at a time, odds are you’re precisely the target demographic for Inmarsat’s new handset being rolled out later this year. Oddly, despite the company’s decades-long history of providing satellite phone service, the IsatPhone Pro is apparently the first model ‘purpose-built for its network’ with awesome features like Bluetooth, text messaging, email support, and GPS capability that can be injected into outgoing text messages (you know, for when you finally strike oil somewhere in the Mariana Trench). Anyhow, the company has announced that the first calls have now been successfully made using the handset on the way to retail availability this June — but if you have to ask for a price (either for the phone or a per-minute rate), odds are it’s not for you

Microsoft intros SideWinder X4 anti-ghosting gaming keyboard

Microsoft has unveiled its latest keyboard designed specifically for gamers. The SideWinder X4 claims to handle the problem of ghosting — where it’s impossible to determine exactly which of multiple keys have been pressed — by detecting up to 26 keys at any one time. Quite who can press 26 keys in one go is another matter, but the facility is there in case you have two friends round to help you. In addition, the keyboard offers macro recording, allowing gamers to record a series of commands to a single key, in addition to a macro repeat feature.

Can US Power Handle Electric Cars?

Here’s something refreshing: rather than question the electric car’s feasibility based on how much electricity they’ll consume, The Economist points out a more practical problem: the weakness of the US power grid, and the potential overwhelming the power distribution system by environmentally-conscious early urbanites: A study done a few years ago by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, suggested there was enough idle generating capacity in America to recharge three quarters of the country’s 230m cars if they were plug-ins of one sort of another—provided they only connected to the grid during off-peak hours, and preferably in the coal-rich midwest. But the vast majority of new plug-ins will be located in a handful of urban centres on the east and west coasts, which, unlike the midwest, do not have huge reserves of cheap, coal-fired generating capacity. Nor can they import it easily from the middle of the country, given the fragile nature of the grid.

Michael Hsu: Nokia Taiwan: Symbian 2 is garbage, we’re going straight to Symbian 3

Digitimes doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to rumours, so take this with a grain of salt, but they say that they’ve spoken to Michael Hsu, General Manager of Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) Taiwan, and have learned that Nokia isn’t going to make any Symbian 2 handsets and instead is going to jump straight to Symbian 3. Bell rolls out Enhanced 911 (Phase Two) services in Canada

Bell is proud to announce the availability of Enhanced 911 (Phase Two) services for their subscribers as well as Solo Mobile clients with compatible handsets. The main difference between this new service and the old one is that responders can now accurately pinpoint the location of the caller via GPS and triangulation through the cellular towers within the vicinity. As the case is in most emergency situations, time is of great value, and with this new E911 (Phase Two) system in place, finding the location of the caller is now much easier and faster. Furthermore, thanks to this early roll by Bell, Canada is now in the record books as the first country in the world to implement this enhanced emergency call system on a nationwide basis. Of course, for this to work, you need to have a compatible handset.

Nokia skipping Symbian V2, Maemo 6 products in second half of 2010

DigiTimes is reporting that mobile giant Nokia plans to forgo Symbian V2 and release Symbian V3, complete with multitouch functions, in the second half of 2010. Perhaps even more exciting than that, was what Digi’s sources had to say about Symbian 4: “Symbian version 4 is believed to be based on the Qt cross-platform application development framework developed by Trolltech. The Qt will allow software developers to develop application software supporting Symbian and Maemo platforms simultaneously.” Nokia acquired Trolltech back in June, 2008. While no details of Maemo 6 were revealed, the article does state that we’ll get our first look at Maemo 6 handsets by the second half of 2010.

Icosatetrapedal robot

24, Icosatetrapeds have 24 legs.  This robot, built by [Monica Anderson] back in 2005 has 24 pneumatic soft legs. The motion is fantastic, like watching some kind of sea creature walk. Though it only goes about 1 meter per minute, we just couldn’t stop watching.  The compressors were scavenged from some military equipment designed for nerve gas detection, and the brain is a mac mini

Alcatel releases Android-powered Pre knockoff

So far, Palm’s Pre has been knocked off in China. In the rest of the world, no manufacturer felt motivated to touch the form factor so far. Given that the folks at Alcatel’s always had a slightly strange taste (I knew an insider there), the look of the OT-980 does not surprise me too much: According to the French site frandroid , the box will drop in four to five months. It will have an MSM7227 CPU, 192MB of RAM and a QVGA screen

BlackBerry Pearl 9100 coming to T-Mobile USA, Wind Canada?

RIM’s unannounced BlackBerry Pearl 9100 has been spotted in some new photos which indicate that the smartphone might be launched by T-Mobile in the US, or by Wind in Canada. As seen in the images below, the Pearl 9100 supports WCDMA bands I, IV and VIII – meaning 2100MHz, 1700MHz (AWS) and 900MHz. Since T-Mobile and Wind are the only North American carriers that use the 1700MHz spectrum, they’re almost certainly among the ones to offer the 9100.
